Starting Ph 2 tomorrow...

OK - today is my last day of Ph 1 and I have to say it's worked amazingly well for me. I've lost nearly 11 lbs. I know a lot of that is water weight, but still in all, it's very motivating. Even more motivating is that this sugar-holic has no cravings for sugar or carby food that just two weeks ago, I couldn't stay away from. I'm not obsessing over food the way I was and I'm feeling so hopeful that this is actually a way of life that I can live with.

Anyway, in order not to screw up a good thing, I'm trying to plan my menu for my first day of Ph 2 (tomorrow), and would ask you SBD gurus to please do me a huge favor and let me know if the menu sounds OK. Basically all I'm doing is adding strawberries to my afternoon snack and some sweet potato slices to my evening meal. I'm not sure how much of each I should use though????

Breakfast: Eggbeaters w LF cheese, 6 oz low sodium V-8, Coffee with Skim milk

Snack: reduced fat cheese stick

Lunch: salad with left over 1/2 grilled sirloin patty, roasted red pepper, chickpeas, beans, cucumber, onion, salad dressing

Snack: strawberries in LF plain yogurt w/Splenda

Dinner: grilled chicken (marinated in EVOO and balsamic vinegar), steamed brocolli, and grilled sweet potato slices

Dessert: Part skim ricotta cheese with almond extract and a few walnuts

Any suggestions will be most gratefully appreciated!!

for me I only added ONE thing at a time.

the way the transition sticky on this board taught me. took me 6 weeks to transition but i think it was a much better way to go than adding two things a week...

Nessa,
You added things once a week? I know my first thing is strawberries. My son and I love dipping strawberries and yogurt. I was thinking two new things on the whole Phase 2 list to add a week? I want to get some Kashi cereal and strawberries for tomorrow. Been on the diet before, but I am way more nervous this time than before on adding things.

Nessa, I trust your judgement. I've been reading the stickies and I think maybe I'll just add one carb this week. What would your suggestion be - a fruit or a whole grain (most likely would be bread - I'm not a big fan of rice or couscous)?

Yes, the reccomendations are to add one thing the first week (the same thing every day for that week) then add a second thing the next week, etc... And fruit is generally suggested first. I did an apple a day for a week, and the next week I added oatmeal in the mornings and had my apple in the afternoons.

aineed, most people recommend that bread NOT be the first starch you add back. One slice is usually more than 30 gms, so it is more than a serving and it just seems so skimpy compared to 1/2 cup of brown rice or sweet potato or quinoa....I've been saving my bread for special occasions - a burger on a 43 gm bun - which is more than a serving but that bun is TINY! and trying to add the other whole grains in.

OK - then I guess I'll add strawberries to either my lunch or afternoon snack. Strawberries in a salad was always one of my faves!

Any idea how many I should start with? I was thinking of slicing up two or three...sound OK?

The serving size for all berries is 3/4 of a cup, so you could probably have a few more, unless they are large.

i added strawberries the first week. after dinner mixed with ricotta.

worked well for me.

the following week we added a grain/starch such as brown rice.

the third week I added a second fruit in the mornings and moved my PM fruit to afternoon snack...

the fourth week I added a grain to breakfast (oatmeal about 99% of the time)

I never felt comfortable with a third grain but I do sometimes have a third fruit now...

to be honest it's been so long ago that i did my transition I can't even really remember....

Sounds good - in fact the ricotta with strawberry for dessert sounds especially yummy - I just have to be careful that the sweetness doesn't arouse the sleeping Sugar Giant.....

I have to admit I'm much more comfortable just adding one thing first. I've been very satisfied with the food I've been able to eat in P1, and to be perfectly honest, I could live with that for awhile more, but I know it's really not balanced as it should be and (sigh) I must move on.

Thanks all for your help.
