I've been on Thyrolar, Levoxyl and other thyroid medications forever for an underactive thyroid. When I was younger, I ran, lifted weights and did hard impact aerobics. I kept the weight off. Then I suffered an injury that prevents me from exercising like I used to and the weight piled on. I tried starving, Weight Watchers, just salads every day. Lost nothing, even gained. Then I saw a commercial for South Beach and stumbled on this forum.

I started the beginning of March 2008. Without a bit of exercise, I've lost 16 pounds and have been maintaining that loss, something I could never do in the past. Now I have to get my lazy rear in gear and start swimming, the only exercise that won't cause me pain!!

Try SB. You'll love it!!!

I've been dealing with an underactive thyroid for just over 5 or 6 years now (but it's only been 4 years since I was diagnosed and started treatment).
I am currently taking 125 mg of Levothyroxine (generic synthroid) daily.
I, too know how hard it can be. I used to run track/ x- country in high school. I was in good shape.
Less than 10 years later, though, here I was gaining weight inexplicably.
as you can see, my high weight was almost 300 lbs.--- and that was after I'd been on thy meds over a year. I thought just by starting the meds I would lose weight. I was in complete denial about how bad my diet was at the time (for example, I ate ice cream almost every night).
as I would do research online, I heard that SB is good for people with thyroid problems.
The day I had to buy 2x pants was the day I said I'd had enough, I found this board, joined, and started SB the next day.

It's taken me over 1 1/2 years, but I have lost 68 lbs.

My advice for newbies:
Take things one day, one meal, or one bite at a time.
Don't expect yourself to be perfect.
yes, there will be times that you eat something of plan.... whath's really important is that you get back on plan ASAP!!
forgive yourself when you make a mistake.

Let us know if there is anything specific about SB that we can help you with...

Take care, Becky

I had my thyroid removed a few years ago due to Grave's disease, and now take synthroid. I have gained a few pounds since then, but that is down to overeating as much as a lower level of thyroid hormone. We all have to exercize regularly and eat properly to keep our weight down. I'm having good results with SB, particularly in breaking the swwets and starches habit.

Back in early March I began SB with some skepticism. You see, I have hypothyroidism AND was prediabetic. I'd tried Weight Watchers and failed and also a lo-fat diet and failed that as well. I had even started an exercise regime. My weight seemed to hang on and I yo-yo'd with about a 20 to 25 lbs but it wouldn't budge. Plus my cholestrol was high and my fasting glucose was edging upwards towards type 2 diabetes. Dieting and exercise just wasn't doing it for me!

Well here I am, nearly 4 months later AND I have gradually lost nearly 20 lbs. My fasting glucose went from 124 to 91 (126 would have made me diabetic). My cholestrol is the best it's been, within normal range. I will be on SB for life and I know that my exercising will need to be a way of life.

My endocronologist was very affirming when I saw her in late May and told me to keep it up! I would say that SB is the way to go and while the weight will come off slowly I'm glad to be where I am today!

I'm also grateful for this website and the support that we can get here. I'm not here as often lately due to my busy life-style but I know I can always come and get what I need.

In reading the SB book you will read that "dieting" for us with thyroid issues (and insulin resistance)...we'll just meet with frustration. 2 B Thin, you experienced with WW what I did. I felt like the inability to take off the lbs my fault when in actuality it was the foods they promote. Anything that is processed (not "home-made") will have alot of "fillers" (sugars) and other stuff that's not good for us. I was very adapt at reading labels but didn't understand that all that sugar that made these foods taste good was only increasing my insulin (which I wasn't burning off normally).

Just today I was at a Border's book store with a friend and we decidd to get a coffee. The barrista asked me if I'd like a cookie or other "sweet" with mine and boy was it a temptation. BUT all I had to do is tell myself that while it "sounded" good, it really wouldn't have been "good" for me and soon that thought passed. Self-talk is important as we're continually going to have those temptations (think grocery shopping).

Then I also remembered the exercise I'd done earlier in the day and that it would have been counter-productive to give in to my temptation. I'm not anywhere near where I'd love to be but I'm getting there, day by day.

Thank you for being here!!!!

Hi everyone, I too suffer from an under active thyroid for about 6 years. I gain a total of 70 lbs. I jump from diet to diet looking for the right one. I am not a meat eater, so I am adjusting my foods to more veggies. This is working for me. I started about 2 weeks ago.
GOOD LUCK TO ALL.

There is book called the thyroid diet, cannot remember the author that you can look up. I went to chapters and read it there instead of buying it. It might be good in conjunction with SB because there are certain vegetables like broccoli and cabbage which are a problem for thyroid people. As well, soy products are a problem. I just avoid tofu (which is NOT hard to do). South Beach seems to work well for me (hypothyroid since having it removed 26 years ago) It might be a little slower and remember to keep having your thyroid levels checked as you lose because there could be a change. I did have to decrease my medication as a result, which is a good thing. Good luck, this is absolutely the way to go. I experienced a loooooong plateau after six months of good loss, but persisted and am entering phase three soon.
