Hi Everyone,
This is day 1 of P2 for me and I am a little afraid to add things. I am woried it will stop my weight loss or cause my carb cravings to resurface. :? Thanks to reading the message boards in the evening I no longer snack at night which was a huge problem for me. I love this site.

I was afraid when I began P2 as well - but eventually I got over it. Like the veterans of this board will tell you, just add either one fruit or one grain this first week, add another the next week, and so on till you get up to the recommended servings per day for P2.
The fear is often reinforced in P2 because many people stop losing weight or even gain a couple of pounds during the early weeks of P2. But this is normal, your body is adjusting to the new way of eating - don't let it worry you. And don't use it as an excuse to stay in P1 - you need to move on for the health benefits of the fruits and grains.
Personally, I had a huge weight loss in P1 (13 pounds) and gained a couple back during the first two-three weeks of P2. Even with the weight gain, I still lost about a half inch on my waist. The weight loss in P1 was mostly water, but I probably began losing fat during P2 while my water adjusted.
Hang in there and don't be afraid. Enjoy P2 because it feels less like a "diet" and more about healthy eating. You'll have more energy on P2. After your body adjusts, you'll probably only average 1-2 pounds per week depending on your exercise habits, just keep in mind that you are much healthier. You'll feel it. |

I gained 2 pound back in the first few weeks of P2, but now I'm dropping again. Even though I read all the posts on here that said to expect it and not to freak out, I DID. But now I feel better about it.
Don't worry - the fear is normal! Just trust that the plan will work, go slowly, and feel free to come here for support! You can do it! |

| Hi Dotty! I'm also new to P2 this week and I know exactly what you are going through. What is helpful to me is to remind myself that if I get carb cravings, I don't have to act on them. I have also added my carb - a piece of fruit - in the evening so that I won't have to fight cravings for more than a couple of hours. Having menus written out for the day also helps, as I know that I cannot really be hungry when I look at all that I have eaten thus far that day. I also dicided not to bother weighing myself for the first couple or four weeks of P2. Any weight fluctuations are just water. I do not worry that there will be things added that would 'cause' a weight gain: calories in, calories out, and anybody can lose weight on 2 fruits and 2 breads per day. |

...barknBret and Ditdah
Thank you so much for your post. I gained a half a pound the first week I transitioned from P1 to P2 and it seems as if this week - I've lost the half pound (so far) - but those horrible feelings of defeat and despair (like with every other diet I've been on) surface no matter what I tell myself to expect.
My husband, also on the plan, gained 2 pounds and he's equally discouraged. We're doing this together and somehow I always feel responsible even though I know we're following the plan to the T.
So this evening, I'll open up the message boards and read this discussion so he'll feel a bit better too.
Thanks for the encouraging words - I feel a better!

I would take the VERY slow approach as others have mentinoed. A couple of things [sorry if I'm repeating] is that different people have "problems" with different food. So start with one fruit a day, eat it with some protein or fat, or with a meal - at different times of day;
next week, add a grain or starchy vegetable and do the same - some people swear by oatmeal in the morning - I would be craving all day - plus I try to save a starch for a serving of popcorn for the afternoon!! Try the whole grains - quinoa, ww couscous, brown/wild rice, good cereal - before you go to the more processed forms of allowed starches like ww pasta, tortilla's or bread. Some people find that the processed starches cause GI upset or bloating - so it is very individualized and what works for one person will be completely different for another. |

| Debby, how does the popcorn do for you? I like oatmeal in the mornings, and it hasn't caused any problems for me, but for some reason I'm scared to death to try popcorn! |

I only pop the small bag for portion control, I have it around 3:30 - 4 at the office and I"m ready to eat by the time I get home - so it's no like it 'holds' me better or causes cravings. Several people in my cubicle farm make popcorn everyday and the smell drives me crazy - they are eating the full fat kind with all that butter....so it's kind of in self defense.
I have been able to skip some snacks lately - either being too busy or just not hungry - which is a good feeling for me. |

| That's what's driving me nuts! The supervisor keeps a huge box of the 100 calorie bags in our breakroom, and has one every afternoon - the smell is killing me! Maybe I'll try one today for an afternoon snack... |

| I'll have a diet soda with it and feel like I"m really having a treat! My downfall has usually been salty/crunchy snacks - fortunately with SBD I can have a few peanuts or the popcorn |

| Thanks everyone!! Today I had an apple for dessert after lunch. I never knew an apple could taste so good!! :D I knew I could count on all of you for support. I have been trying to lose the same 40 lbs since I quit smoking 10 years ago. I have just been blessed with my first and probably only grandchild and I want to be around to see her grow up. I am prediabetic and with my family history it doesnt look promising if I dont take action now. Thanks again. Dotty |

Oh I was wondering if maybe you were having the same reaction to wheat as I have. Evertime since I started P2 I get a stomach ache if I try to eat a peice of bread or pasta (and you are right a half cup is very small) It doesnt happen with the piece of fruit though. I am wondering if I have developed a sensitivity to wheat products.
