How Many Phase 2 Items Do You Eat Per Day?

Hi everyone. Well, I'm finally in P2! Only 1.5 lbs. of weight loss in P1, probably because I only have 10-15 lbs. total to lose. I tried following the menus in the book for P2 to a "t" for a week, but I ended up gaining weight. I watched my portions and overall caloric intake, but I fear that my body is not cut out to handle rice or grains. Hmph!

So anyway, I was wondering how many Phase 2 items you eat per day. To define a Phase 2 item, it's a food that is not allowed in Phase 1. The ones I'm thinking of in particular are fruit servings, whole grain pasta servings, low glycemic starchy veggies such as sweet potatoes, and SF FF pudding.

Do you eat a P2 item in every meal? Multiple items per meal? Twice per day? Once per day? Less often than that? Are there some P2 items that are "safer" than others? Is fruit preferred over a starch, to expedite the weight loss? I understand P2 is not a free-for-all, but I am wondering if it's safe for me to eat fruit only a few times per week, and possibly avoiding grains all together, except for special occasions.

Thanks!

anywhere from 2-5 per day

oatmeal and banana at breakfast/snack every day

often a starch with dinner

sometimes a fruit later in the day....

some days no grain/starch with dinner... but not because i shouldn't. just cause it's not what I end up making for myself.

it's different for everyone. you have to "play" with it and see what works for you.

I suggest at least 1 fruit each day and one grain/starchy item per day at a minimum.

Also, if you JUST got to P2, you shouldn't be following the meals in the book yet. Those are for people well into P2. You need to add one item in at a time, for at least a few days before you add something else. You have to ease your body into eating the P2 items. Some people don't, but it will really help continue the weightloss and keep the cravings down.

Personally, I would introduce fruit as early as you can, and make sure to have some fruit daily. I have no idea what effect it would have on weight loss, though it's certainly allowed in P2. But fruit is important nutritionally in the long haul - it has all kinds of nutrients you won't get anywhere else. Plus, if you have a yen for desserts, fruit is the most nutrient-dense type of P2 dessert you could be eating.

As most have said...ease into it. Start with a fruit per day for the first week then maybe add a grain with the fruit the second week and work your way up. Every person is different and will react to different fruits and grains differently. I know personally that I can have maybe 1 serving of WW Pasta or rice a week and be okay, but anymore than that I'm in trouble. It's just a grain/starch thats tough on me. Fruits for me seem to be the kindest and I always have at least one a day and most days two. Typically I'll have a fruit with breakfast, a grain/starch with lunch and then a fruit (with protein) as a snack between lunch and dinner. If I'm planning a grain/starch for dinner, I won't have one with lunch. Three seems to be my personal limit to keep me losing. I can occasionally add a second grain/starch to my day (total of 4 Phase 2 items), but definitely no more than twice a week. The great thing about SB is you can figure out what works best for you. It's all trial and error at first.

That's water weight from a phenomenon explained in the FAQ. Don't panic or think that those foods are somehow bad for you.

To answer the original question, I usually eat 2-3 fruits per day and 2-3 starches per day. No pudding, but I eat a little of the allowed kinds of chocolate.

So, do you lose weight on that amount?

I have a few vanity pounds that I've been slowly chipping away at, but, yeah, I've lost and kept off 60-80 pounds this way.
