KHKY

Hello Everyone,

I am new to South Beach. I have Fibromyalgia and my new doctor feels a low-glycemic diet is less stressful to the body and, therefore, wants me to follow one. I decided on South Beach, since it has so many resources and support.

If anyone else has Fibromyalgia or CFS and would like to help support each other, I would love to have the "program buddy"!

Take Care,

Kerri

Hi there. I have had chronic pain for years. Thought it was fibro, then MS and now its a certain type of migraine. Anyways regardless of what it is. Its hard to deal with and gets better with exercise and diet and less painful in summer/spring.

I have been eating many sugar free or organic sugars since I first got the pain and I can tell when I have to much regular sugar. It causes more pain as well as more than one cup of coffee a day. I also cant have any sodas.

First thing for me was cutting out ALL high fructose corn syrup.

I think last year when I ate the best I was in way less pain! The best I had felt in years. If I wanted chocolate I would only get organic. Even if I ate pancakes it was wheat. Of course I was not on the diet last year!

So I can partner up with you on this! I am 2nd week of Phase 1.

Hi Richelle,

Thanks for responding. I'm glad you were able to get your pain under control with diet and nutrition, that is wonderful! Also, it would be great to partner up.

I'm not sure if I'll be blessed with less pain due to no sugar, but I have certainly noticed less hunger with no processed carbs and the fatigue is less up and down. I am trying again on Phase 1. I did great a couple of weeks ago, but "fell off" during memorial day weekend. I am hopping back on now.

My fibro is , unfortunately, an accurate diagnosis. BUT, that does not mean that I don't think I can manage it better with a healthy lifestyle. I see a holistic MD and he wants me to start Qi Gong yoga, has me on some supplements and, as I mentioned before, wants me on a low glycemic diet. Plus, I am taking steps to reduce stress in my life in other areas. South Beach is going to be a vital part in this big picture.

The way I see it, I may not cure my condition with a healthy lifestyle, but I would certainly make it worse without one. Sitting around eating Ho Ho's will make anyone feel lousy!

I'll talk to you later,

Kerri

Thats awesome you can see a holistic MD. I am totally in to herbs and supplements. Thats pretty much all my son gets. Unfortunately with me I just got diagnose with GERD (acid reflux) literally a week ago. I never really had problems with my stomach. My family does. Heredity and stress of losing my job (because of my pain) caused me to have this. Thats another reason I started on the diet. I have eaten pretty healthy except little splurges for 3 years now. The best was last year though. I buy mostly natural or organic foods they are the best for you!

I do yoga in my home. I own the yoga burn dvd and the yoga for abs, upper and lower body. I am going to be joining the YWCA and going there as well. However right now I feel the strongest I have felt in years. Maybe the Turbo Jam is working.

Its good to have the diagnosis! I have seen many specialists and docs. Next is an allergist. On top of this pain..sometimes I sporadically become paralyzed for up to 4 hours. I have been told its Migraines (which I just have sharp head pain) and been told its my potassium levels. Stress is a huge pain inducer! If you can keep that down with yoga and other changes that will be awesome. With me doing some hardcore exercising has been helping.

At least you are going to make yourself feel better. I know two people who have fibro and I dont want to be like that. I think its something people can manage with lifestyle change. Like you said not sitting around eating Ho Hos!

Well here is to feeling better! :)

Hi! I too have been diagnosed with fibro. The DR recommended taking Lyrica but I choosing not too. I will however take his advice and lose 15-20 pounds. I followed SB about a year ago and felt great. P2 was always hard for me. I also have a wheat sensitivity and break out when I eat it. I totally understand the effects of sugars on the body.

Oh there is so much I want to say. I'm just glad to have found people who know what it is like. People who are taking a journey to wellness and not just giving up.

Full blown fibro here and plan to start the diet on Saturday..need to shop...I have done it before and can remember feeling like I haven't felt this good in so long.
There are many doctors who feel most with fibro have problems with high glycemic good.
My plan is to do Phase 1 then still count calories as I have much weight to lose and I want to be accountable.

How is everyone feeling so far?

Feeling pretty good. Thanks for asking. Not feeling those crashes after meals and my joints seem to be a bit better. (Could be the sunshine) I think part of it is I'm away from the wheat. The blisters on my hands have stopped. I used to breakout after eating it.
How are you doing? Feeling any better?

I was doing great until I added wheat back in for two days then stopped. Decided to bring my own popcorn to the movie last night. maybe a cup. That was a mistake. It gave me body pain. Otherwise I am doing good. I am going to try oats this morning. We will see. I am looking forward to the allergist on Tuesday.

I otherwise feel the best I have in a very long time.

Well it was good planning on your part to take your own popcorn. Too bad it didn't end up going well. I too find that alot of grain foods bother me. Even whole grains. I'm trying to avoid them all together. Do they trigger cravings for you or is it strictly joint pain?

For me its joint and body pain and now that I have Gerd its like an attack on my body. I will find out for sure tomorrow at allergist. I think anyone else that has pain may notice a difference to being on this diet.

I cut out most sugars years ago and apparently should have done that with the grains too.

Just wondered how things went at the allergist.

Thanks for asking...

I go to get allergy testing on tuesday for 2 hours or so. When I went there I was really itchy. He did a small pressure test and said my histamine blockers are trying to come out... I ate strawberries then... So I no longer eat those. Yesterday ate a peach and it hurt my stomach. SO far oatmeal and brown rice are fine, but I have decided not to go further into my diet until I go get testing done and see when the results come back. I am sick of being sick...

SO I know I have allergies:( But I should be happy maybe the 6 year of trying to figure this out is over.

Well so far I have found that I am allergic to shrimp, crab, oyster, soy hazelnut, cashew, peanut, walnut, almond and severely allergic to peas and carrots..so bad I need an epi pen!

My pain has subsided until last night, but I ate carrots and peanuts

Wow! That's quite a list. Hopefully having this information will help you get feeling better.
I still find it amazing how much of an impact food has on our bodies. When I was younger I never even thought about it.
