Best Machines At the Y?

We have a family YMCA membership. While my daughter has used it, I have only been there once for the steam room after my car was totaled in a wreck last year. I went through the machine training at that time, but I was wondering which machines you all use?

When I was in my 30's and living in Houston, I used to use a stairmaster and do aerobics. Now that I am almost 50, my knees and joints can't take that strain. I was wondering if other "older people" like me have found particular machines that work well. The trainer at the Y was 20 something, and while he knew the machines he didn't seem to be familiar with modifying routines for things like arthritis. I can't afford a personal trainer, so I thought I would check with you all to see what you use.

Thanks in advance,

Tubby

Free weights and body weight exercises are your friend :)

You can adjust the level of workout by changing weight, # of reps and number of sets.

If you want to go the 'bodybuilding' route and add some mass/muscle to your frame you can look at the Body for Life program ... I'd guess that book can be had for well under $15 now. If you're more interested in just strength gains without adding mass, check out dragondoor.com ... read the articles, there are a number of them geared at the beginner.
