Hi Does anyone know why you can have a slim fast meal shake and not a slim fast optima shake on phase 2? It makes no sense to me and i was worried about having one because they have sugar in them. I sometimes like having one for breakfast when i'm in a hurry. Thanks Shonna

Where did you see that information? (That the meal one was ok but the optima wasn't.)

Probably from the link in my FAQ. That's just info from the last Good Carbs/Fats Guide. I don't know anything about those shakes (I eat real food), and it's possible that they've been reformulated since the publishing date if something looks off to you.

I got it from page 97 of The SBD Good fats Good Carbs Guide published 2005.

I eat real food too! I just enjoy the slim fast shake that you make from the dry mix w/ non fat milk. I like to have it once in a while for breakfast when I’m not that hungry or in a hurry. It's high in protein so it fills me up tell snack/lunch.

I haven't had it since i've been on SB because I was worried about the sugar and confused as to why the meal shake is okay but not the optima. I'm not sure why there's a difference.

There are so many questions that I have on this diet. I just found your forum. It looks like it's a great place to try and get some answers so I thought I would ask.

If you go to the Slim Fast website you can get the nutrition info on their products. I looked at the Vanilla flavored shake mix and the Vanilla Optima shake in a can. Here is what I found:

Powder Mix, vanilla
one serving, 1/3 cup
110 cal
Fat 3.5 g
Sat fat .5 g
fiber 4 g
sugars 6 g
protein 7 g

Optima shake in a can
serving size, one can
180 cal
fat 5 g
sat fat 1 g
fiber 5 g
sugars 17 g
protein 10 g

The Optima has nearly THREE times the sugar as the powdered mix. I bet that had something to do with his not approving the Optima.

I found it VERY interesting, though, that Dr Agatston APPROVES of 5 out of the 7 shakes he has in the GCGFG. Good for ALL phases. Only the Optima and EAS Myoplex Carb Solution shakes are not considered "good". The Slim Fast Optima is an Avoid, the EAS one is Limited (once a week).

Here is what he says about meal replacement bars and shakes in the GCGFG.

"The SBD encourages eating healthy meals based on whole foods. But, when circumstances do not permit, a meal replacement bar or beverage can be quite useful; certainly, a good meal replacement bar is preferable to fast food."
