I am going to see the Midnight show with a girlfriend on Thursday.
(YIKES what was I thinking??)
The plan is to have Cosmopolitans/Martinis before the show and then munch on popcorn during the show.
I can handle the popcorn. I plan to make something yummy from the recipe section and slip it in.
My trouble starts with the cosmopolitan or martini. What are they? I don't drink these but we are doing this because of the movie. Whats in them and how can I make them more SBD friendly. |

Unfortunately there's not a way to make a cosmo SB friendly. It's usually made with vodka, triple sec, lime juice and cranberry juice. It's basically a sweet martini. You can always opt for wine. I know the main drink of the show was a cosmo, but they drank wine too so it's not a stretch.
Great idea about sneaking in your own food. That's the best way to do it. It's also not a bad idea to sneak in your own popcorn too as the stuff in the theater is usually cooked in bad oil. It's really going to be a personal choice if you want to go off plan for the evening and just remember to hop right back on. Sounds like you'll have fun no matter what choice you make. |

| A martini is gin or vodka and vermouth. It would probably be technically ok for SB (the vermouth may not be but it's a miniscule amount) sice we can have liquor. But you'd need to watch your serving size - one would probably be two shots worth, so that's all you're allowed. However it's a very strong drink - basically just straight liquor - so you'd need to drink it slowly and make sure you had some food before or with it. |

Thanks everyone! The girl I am going with is a lifelong friend however she isn't a SBD person and when we planned this, she asked "Still on Diet or are we going to eat?"
**Big Sigh**
I just want to stay healthy AND enjoy myself. Very Possible with a little bit of forethought. |

More drink suggestions...
If you're going for a martini and have never had one before, I suggest a slightly dirty vodka martini. It has olive juice in it, which sounds gross, but is delicious. It cuts the bite of the martini a lot.
Another suggestion is a Citron martini with a twist. Milder flavor.
If you're really tempted by the Cosmo, I would order it without the triple sec, ask for fresh lime juice instead of Rose's lime (which is incredibly sweet), and just a splash of cranberry juice, which is all that's really supposed to be in the drink. It should be a very pale pink.
I tended bar / owned a bar for many years. Bartenders may be grumpy at first with special orders (which in my town is anything that takes longer to say than PBR), but a good tip quickly degrumpifies them. |

"...when we planned this, she asked "Still on Diet or are we going to eat?" "
UGH. I've had this, too. My response is always... "Yes, I will eat. I may not eat what YOU eat, but I will eat. AND I will have fun. Let's not make this about the food."
I also get... "Why don't you just go off your plan tonight and HAVE FUN for a change, live a little?"
My response... "Being with you is how I have fun. I don't feel deprived when I make healthy choices, please don't think I do. I like eating this way."
Just try to not take it personally (most are NOT trying to "get you fat again") and do try to see it from their perspective... which is usually from someone who views "diets" as punishment and something horrible to endure. They may also see you as thin, and not needing to "diet". Until they get that THIS is simply how you eat, and not a self imposed punishment to lose weight, they will continue to urge you to "let loose". Just smile and say something like, "I WANT a salad with chicken. A burger and fries sounds too heavy right now."
And then change the subject... ;) |

Fill a martini shaker with ice. Add Vodka for how every many Cosmos you're gonna serve. Squeeze in lime juice and add 1 12 oz container of Ocean Spray DIET Cranberry Juice (10 calories for 12 fluid ounces). And sugar is 3g per bottle. If you want to add Triple Sec, make it just a dash. I don't use it at all.
Shake that shaker so hard that some of the ice cracks into little chips. Pour into your CHILLED martini glass and enjoy!!! |

Thanks Magna for the correction. I noticed that after I pushed send.
As far as how the evening went................ for my Sex AND the City night. Had fun!
I had a dirty martini (only 1) and smuggled my own popcorn/water bottle to the show. The serving size for the martini was probably a little bit over what it should be but in the grand scheme of things, I could have done worse. MUCH worse!
I did take a little bit of ribbing from my girlfriend. She had 3 Cosmos to my one martini and ordered a popcorn from the theater. She said that it was embarrassing to bring my own in. I slipped it in by my purse and no one even noticed!
The movie itself was good. Very long and I thought that there were quite a few things that did not need to be in the movie (fluff scenes) but I enjoyed it as I have been a fan of this series for years. For those who watch the show. You gotta go see it. You will like it!
Thanks to all who posted with help and support!

Out of curiosity, since you said (or I thought, at least) that you hadn't had a martini before... what did you think? It's a pretty strong drink for someone who doesn't drink them, and the flavor can be overwhelming. Still, I like them occasionally. Did you enjoy it?
(And I wouldn't worry at all about having one! You stuck to ONE! That's awesome, and seems fine for SB. Especially since you don't seem to drink like that too often. Way to go!!) |

Hi Ditdah
I liked it! It wasn't something that I would have everyday but it was good.
I had a sip of a martini many years ago and I found it be very dry. Didn't care for it. I know that there are different kinds so when you suggested a dirty martini, I thought it was worth a try. You were right when you said that the olive juice cuts down the strong taste of the alchohol. I like olives too so that helps.
I am usually a lite beer or fru fru drink type of gal. So this was something new for me. I enjoyed it and the fact that it was SBD friendly (in moderation/every once in a while) is a big perk.
Thank you so much!
