| I've done a pretty good job at changing my WOE but I need to work on my kids (ages 7 & 4 yo twins). My 7 year old weighs 97 lbs. I'm looking for suggestions for make ahead breakfast or quick breakfast, lunch & snack ideas. |

snacks
-part-skim mozzarella sticks
-reduced-fat cheese [any flavor] cubes
-low-fat or nonfat yogurt [no sugar for SB - not sure if you want to give your kids artificial sweeteners though... maybe do plain yogurt and add something more natural for them, like honey or agave]
-nuts
-FRUIT
-fresh veggies and dip (probably homemade is best)
as for breakfast, how about quiche? I don't know if kids will like it, but they might! (especially if you make them to look like muffins.) check out the recipe summary [top of this forum] for recipes for quiche... as well as many other things. hard-boiled eggs are great (can be made ahead). add a V8 or some veggies. and it also depends on what phase you are in. Phase 2 can be cold or hot cereal. Oatmeal (old fashioned) can be made in the microwave in a matter of minutes. Add some protein on the side and some veggies, etc.
for lunch, for the kids I'd so sandwiches with whole grain bread. good protein. maybe fresh veggies on the side with dip or something. for you, salads are always good... add some already cooked chicken (left overs or whatever), lots of veggies, good dressing, etc.
You can also peek in people's journals to see what they are eating for new ideas. And of course, the recipe summarY!! |

breakfast tacos on 100% whole wheat/whole grain tortilla. Scramble an egg into pre-sauteed diced pepper and onions and even some black beans, and throw in a small heated tortilla with LF shredded mexi cheese and salsa. I made these every day this weekend as her pre-soccer tournament training meal! ;) She loves 'em and was a treat for her as well.
Also kids should only be in P2/P3, not P1, and include more dairy. Just not enough nutrition for children and their nutritional demands are higher than for adults.
Quote: Q: Is this plan safe for a pre-teen girl?
Dr. Agatson: For Phase 1, I would suggest that pre-teens consult their pediatricians. The basic principles of the South Beach Diet, however, are particularly important for pre-teens because the helpful oils help brain and nervous system development while trans fats may actually impair brain and nervous system development. The whole fruits and vegetables and whole grains insure enough natural vitamins and nutrients that help in normal growth and development.
Quote: Beverly, MA: Is phase one designed to just help you break cravings (as well as get a jumpstart on the weight loss), or is there some medical/nutritional rationale to it?
Dr. Arthur Agatston: Most obesity in America is due to the processed foods that result in elevated sugar and insulin levels that increase belly fat. This is associated with often severe cravings. A good example was in the documentary 'Super Size Me' where after several weeks of fast food consumption, the hero developed severe cravings due to exaggerated swings in blood sugar. Phase 1 is designed to reverse or to resolve these cravings and will also result in fairly rapid loss of belly fat. For those who are not significantly overweight and who do not have significant belly fat or cravings, it is not necessary to begin in Phase 1 but it is better to start in Phase 2 or Phase 3. For children we generally recommend Phase 3, which means making better overall food choices.

Thanks everyone. I'm NOT going to restrict my daughter's eating, like to PH1, I'm just looking for healthy/good food ideas to introduce to her. My girls don't eat too bad compared to the majority of kids but I need to do better with sneaking in veges & getting rid of the refined sugars. They love breakfast cereal to snack on & we all know how bad that is for them.
nygirl - I already feed them everything you mentioned for snacks so I guess I'm not doing too bad with feeding them.
Redrox - I'll try the taco's they sound good. One more question - Do you eliminate all refined sugars for your kids? I don't want to be the "mean" mom so my kids get all that bad stuff (like Hostess cakes) once a day. The rest of the day I try to have them eat healthy choices. Except for the horrible school lunches that my 7yo ate for most of the year.
ladybugnessa - I eat NPB & but when tried giving it to my daughters they wouldn't eat it; They like the super creamy stuff. I do feed them whole grain bread already. |

| they will learn to like the NPB.... wean them off the junky stuff by mixing it... 75% junk PB and 25% NPB... then gradually up it till it's all NBP! |

I didn't like the NPB with just peanuts, but I found one that only has peanuts and salt - love it - I got the chunky cause that's what I like but they had creamy as well. This stuff is GOOD. I wish I remembered the name - it wasn't one of the popular brands, but had a red label...I'll check it at home.
FWIW, I like the cashew and almond butter as much as the PB until I found this one. |

I did that with whole to 2%, then 1% milk....now all we drink is skim and my son never notices the difference. If he asked, I'd get him 2%, but why bother...I have found with things like the PB, NSA fruit spreads, ww bread, brown rice - if I don't point out that it's different, he won't event notice. |

No we don't. There just aren't that many around the house for them to choose from! ;) They eat pretty well most of the time, they understand it isn't good for them, they aren't overweight and they keep active. They eat more junk than I do, but they don't have my health issues either. We try not to make things "forbidden", just be aware of the concerns and practice moderation and keep it all in perspective. |
