I didn't mean to start a debate over protien shakes :? & since the thread was locked before I could say thanks for everyones input, I wanted to start a new thread to do so.

Also, feel free to ignore, no one needs to respond I just wanted those who responded to my thread to know I appreciated their input.

lol I slowly realized that as I was reading through the thread. I should probably learn to do a search on things before I ask  I'm learning! lol

And yes, I did learn a few things awhile reading :) My brother is a body builder & uses shakes all the time, so when I was in my big weight loss mode I got into the habit of drinking them after a workout to help build muscle. I do like them when I'm on the go & don't have much time, but totally get the idea behind eating your protein b/c you digest it slower.

Anyhow ~ interesting things! Thanks again everyone :)

I can't resist putting in my two cents.

Protein shakes aren't necessarily a bad thing. The premade ones in a can are junk IMO. A homemade one with quality ingredients can be quite healthy. In my case, I often struggle with getting enough protein. If I had my way I'd eat nothing but vegetables and fruit and yogurt. Yeah, there's protein in yogurt but not enough if that's your only source. I eat meat and fish but sometimes I go through phases where the thought of any meat, fish, tofu just sounds awful. So yes, I sometimes have protein shakes.

I rarely hear anyone call V8 evil and that's drinking a vegetable.

I think the reason you don't see anyone talking evil about V8 is that it is on the approved list of vegetables - although most successful people will also say that it is probably best limited to 1 serving [4-6 oz] day and not to be used as the sole source of vegetation.
FWIW there are protein substitutes listed on the approved list....

Just a quick note...you could always make your own version of a shake before you go to the gym. Dr. A. gave a recipe for a Wake-Up Energy Shake in the new book.

(blend 1/2 cup low fat, low-sugar artificially sweetened vanilla soymilk, 1/2 cup nonfat plain yogurt, 3 ounces firm silken tofu, and 1/4 cup dry-roasted almonds until frothy) Keep in mind though that it's basically a meal replacement shake.

hmmm I wonder if I could "do" tofu in a drink like that...I try and I just can't get it going down!!!

and heres a different issue....soy and estrogen....I can't take hormone replacements cause of blood clots - is soy an estrogen replacement and would it help hotflashes without having the side effect of promoting DVTs??? Anyone know?

I wouldn't call it a an estrogen replacement, but it does contain phytoestrogens which mildly mimic estrogen. There's lots of debate about the effects of these phytoestrogens and about soy in general. If you have any doubt that you should be eating/drinking soy based foods, I would definitely talk to your doctor about it.

I better wait and ask him, I need to get my mammogram and labs checked soon anyway...dang botched hysterectomy messed me up in all kind of ways!

That shake sounds good although I wouldn't be able to drink it on a regular basis, I really try and avoid soy/and/or estrogen based food/supplements - not completley but I keep it limited. I'm estrogen domininant so I have to be careful with how much I intake. I like the EAS protein shakes for when I do have one, I think their pretty balanced esp. when I've compared to other ones - it's not perfect but it works well for me.

I'd ask your doctor too debbi ~ if your sensitive to any size of hormonal shift (like I am) you want to be careful. I'm sorry to hear about your hysterectomy :( Something like that's hard enough to deal with much less with added problems *hugs*
