well if it's a full size bagel that's probably 3-4 grain servings

and if it's whole grain that's better but the multigrain ones are probably not whole grain

best advice just keep on going...

as for menus two years in and I still write my menu every morning!

That brings up a question I've been wanting to ask. I found what's called The Alternative Pita Bread and Alternative Bagel. I love them but I'd best run it by you'll. The ingredients for the pita bread, serving size 1 pita 2 oz.

Calories: 110
Total Fat 0.5 g
Cholesterol 0mg
Sodium 400mg
Total Carbohydrate 25g
Dietary Fiber 8 g
Sugars 1 g
Protein 7 g

It says Whole Wheat, no saturated fat; no trans fat; cholesterol free. The ingredients are Whole Wheat Flour, Engriched Wheat Flour (Wheat Flour, Malted Barley Flour), Niacin, reduced iron, thiamine mononitrate, riboflavin, ascorbic acid, folic acid, water, wheat gluten, corn starch, inulin, oat fiber, yeast, salt, calcium propionate and scorbic acid (preservatives, sugar, calcium sulfate, enzine.

Then it says "contains wheat."

Is this okay to eat. And how do we count it.

Thanks.

They quick answer is no, these are not okay. The second ingredient is "enriched wheat flour", which is white flour. They are not acceptable for south beach.

Some people would say to stay away from pita which has any ingredients except for 100% whole wheat, water, sugar, salt, and oil.

Personally, I eat pita with ingredients similar to the one you listed (oat bran, wheat gluten, flax), with one important difference -- the wheat in them is 100% whole wheat. Many of these products were designed for low-carb diets. They aren't as pure as 100% whole wheat, but I prefer the taste and texture.

Thanks, fab50. Please give me a brand name. I have a hankering for a bagel with lite cream cheese and maybe a slice or so of lox, purple onion and a bunch of grape tomatoes!!!

For bagels, I use Pepperidge farm 100% whole wheat minibagels

Pita and wraps are Joseph's mideast bakery reduced carb, or Cedar's low carb whole wheat wraps. I live in the northeast, and I don't know how wide their distribution areas are.

I 've seen Cedar's Hummus at Whole Foods. I'm going to see if they have the wraps there. The Pepperidge minis should be easy to find. Thanks.

All of this talk about bagels made me think of my current fav breakfast food- If you try it, I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

WW Pepperige Farms Mini Bagel
-toast it-

1 egg-Microwave for 1 min. Don't forget to spray the microwave safe bowl you are using w/ pam, easier clean up- also stir the egg before nuking it-

1 pc turkey bacon-Microwave for 1 minute

1 slice FF cheese

Salsa

Put the egg, cheese, turkey bacon and salsa between the toasted bagel. You have a delicious breakfast sandwich that is good for you and BETTER than the ones they sell at the fast food joints.

I am hooked on these!

You know, Mrs. Dayna, I could make that at work and drive everyone crazy. And I think I will. We have a microwave and a toaster. Yep. Gonna do it!! Sounds too yummy to resist. Thank you.

Glad I could help. I make these little sandwiches all the time at work. All you need is a microwave you are done!
I also pair it with a small banana if you want.

Bon Appetite!

We don't have a toaster at work. Think it'd still be good without toasting the bagel? (I haven't had these yet - didn't know if they needed it to be good - some bagels do!)

Whoa, is cream cheese ok? Isn't that stuff loaded with fat?

We're allowed 2 Tbsp of fat free or lowfat cream cheese a day.

Ditdah, I make this all the time at work with only my classroom microwave. There are many days that I cannot sneak to the teachers lounge to use the toaster. I just heat up the bagel for 10 seconds or so in the microwave to soften the bread and take the chill off.

Enjoy!
