It's not BAD for you, it just has fewer vitamins and minerals. (It has basically no nutritional value compared to other lettuces.) It won't hurt you to eat it, but romaine or spinach or mixed greens etc... would be a better choice. I'll eat iceburg sometimes (I am right now, actually) but I don't count it towards my veggie requirement.

harjie, I think, if iceburg lettuce makes up 6 of your 8 cups of veggies, then you're really only getting 2 cups of veggies a day.

If you could figure out what's the measurement of the veggies you're eating that isn't iceburg lettuce - and it adds up to what you're supposed to have, then you can eat all the iceburg lettuce you want.

this is the first time I've read that iceberg can't count as any of your cups of veggies, granted, I don't use it often and when I do it doesn't make up more than half my 3 cups of lettuce before adding other veggies, but I definitely have not discounted it and had not seen that it was to be avoided in teh foods list. I think common sense would tell us that it should not comprise most or all of our veggies...but I am not a nutritionist, nor do I read Dr. A's mind!!!!

i eat iceberg lettuce every day

I also eat a lot of other veggies. Iceberg lettuce is basically filler. very little nutrition with it.

me and google....ice berg lettuce, cup for cup compared to cucumber with peel is pretty darn close in nutritional value. I think, again, that one would not want to make the majority of their veggie diet iceberg - I usually eat 2-3 cups of lettuce in my salad and always make sure I have at least 1 to 1.5 cups of other veggies added to it - so the lettuce is sort of a carrier.

i'm learning so much this time, not just following the list, but trying to pack the most into every meal.

Here's a good website for getting an idea about the nutritional value of some of the more nutrient-dense foods:
http://whfoods.org/foodstoc.php

There are other kinds of healthy lettuces and salad greens besides the ones listed on this site, though - it just identifies the most popular among the higher-nutrition varieties.

FWIW, I have learned to tell when I'm vegetable-deprived, and iceberg lettuce seems to fill the bill. For example, when I'm traveling, sometimes the best available foods are proteins and I start to feel like I need some vegetables. For me, iceberg lettuce is better than no vegetables, but not as good as some of the more nutrient-dense vegetables.

The difference in the lettuces are in the vitamins and nutrients.

Take a look at this:

Quote: One cup of iceberg lettuce:

8 calories
0.5 gram protein
0.7 gram fiber
10 mg calcium
78 mg potassium
1.5 mg vitamin C
16 mcg folate
13.3 mcg of vitamin K
164 mcg beta carotene
152 mcg of lutein + zeaxanthin

One cup of romaine lettuce has:
8 calories
0.58 gram protein
1 gram fiber
16 mg calcium
116 mg potassium
11.3 mg vitamin C
64 mcg folate
48.2 mcg vitamin K
1637 mcg beta carotene
1087 mcg of lutein + zeaxanthin.
The Romaine lettuce is a better choice

They're both lettuce, so it's not like thay are going to be superfoods, but the romaine just has more of the good stuff.

Cucumbers do count as vegetables. Their nutritional value is not super-high, but it's pretty good:

The reason people here are taking pains to encourage people to eat lettuce besides iceberg is that people can eat a whole lot of iceberg lettuce. If you wanted to, you could easily eat 4 or 5 cups of it a day, and rely on it as your main vegetable. That would displace healthier vegetables from your diet. Usually people don't eat 4 or 5 cups of cucumbers a day, though. So feel free to enjoy cucumbers as one of your vegetables.

I like iceberg lettuce too. Though i've been avoiding it because of the nutrional aspect.

I remember hearing once that it has the nutrional content of cardboard and about as much flavor, I think Alton Brown said that one day.

It's a veggie and I've never seen anything saying don't eat it.

I think it's more like - don't make iceberg your only veggie, and preferably in a salad, not your only lettuce. I don't think it's disputed that it is a better choice...but if you are in a situation where an iceberg lettuce salad with other veggies is your only option - say you find yourself eating out - you make the best of it....you don't say, oh, iceberg isn't a veggie, I can't eat that, so I'll just have the baked beans and corn on the cob!!!
