Hi, I'm Madly. I've been posting in the Phase I topic but am moving here. I have done SB before. And see that a lot of other people are in Phase I for the second, third, fourth time? Maybe more? How many times have you "done" SB? Do you know why you STOPPED doing SB and started over? I know personally that when I got to Phase III, it was hard because I didn't know how often I could have those things that are only allowed on Phase III. The doctor didn't exactly spell it out. What he DID say is that the plan is meant to be flexible, that you may move back to Phase I if you gain weight back and need to lose a few pounds.
Ok, so here is my experiment. I only need to lose 10-15 pounds. I have done Phase I for the past 5 days. Today I decided to move between phases each week. Mondays and Tuesdays I am eating only Phase I foods. Wednesdays I will eat Phase II. Thursdays, back to Phase I. Friday, Phase II. Saturday, I will eat Phase III (and I will allow myself to have a dessert if I want). Sunday will be Phase II again.
Some folks on the Phase I board are evidently outraged at this experiment.
Let me be very clear "This is NOT the way the book sets up the plan."
If you have never done SB before, do not COPY me and think you are doing SB!
Here are my reasons for trying this:
1. Do people drop out of SB because they keep "cheating" on Phase I?
2. Do people give up after a few days on Phase I, because they see an interminable string of days ahead with only protein and vegetables?
3. Is Phase III a slippery slope because once you're there, one chocolate chip cookie turns into 5. And french fries might not hurt.. and well, you didn't gain any weight on that yesterday, so today a couple of beers and a piece or two of pizza probably won't hurt?
I've done all of those.
So this time, I'm not every completely moving from one phase to another. I'll always have a few days a week that are completely free from sugars, from starches. I'll have a few days a week with whole grains, and fruit.
And I'll have one day a week that I can have pretty much whatever I want. This might work for me because I am not addicted to any certain kind of food, and therefore probably won't binge on anything that one day.
If you're curious to see how it goes, check back in here and I'll keep posting.
Here are my stats:
Female, age 48, 5'2", current weight 133 (I lost two pounds last week)
My desired weight: 120-122
Stay tuned to see if the experiment works! |

I am on my third time with SB and I always fall after phase I... I love starches and that is about it. I am sort of on phase I and "sort of" is because I have not had time to go to the grocery store. I will be going this week and after I do I have to be on phase I for a while to get rid of my cravings. When I finally loose the cravings I would love to try this with you.... :) I will try and stay away from the phase III though... I am a sucker for carbs..... I can eat Jello for desserts....
stats : 31 yrs old female - 5'3" - 264 lbs first goal is to get below 200 lbs 2nd goal is to be at when I was married - 170 lbs anything under that would take me back to hig school....... |

| What you are doing makes no sense to me. If you have the willpower to adhere to that schedule, then you should certainly have the willpower to eat P2 (read: balanced meals that include fruits and starches) most days and have your P3 day on Saturday...which is really what P3 is...eating P2 and allowing yourself an occasional indulgences like desert on a Saturday night. |

jams: In case you didn't see it, backstory started in this thread:
http://www.southbeach-diet-plan.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=87980&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=165
Don't think it changes anything you said, just putting it in perspective.
MadlyinLove: Would this thread make more sense in the journal area if you are going to be keeping it as a blog/journal of your experiment? I can move it if you like. let me know either here or by PM. Thx. |

Not intended as a flame...but why doesn't that make this a P3 day instead of a P1 day? |

Because sausage is all protein (and fat, of course), that's why.
It is not sugar or starch, which are the things that get added back in Phase III. I piece of regular sausage is not a phase III food, in my opinion.
Also, since this is a heart diet, I believe that the reason the doctor emphasizes low fat stuff and lean meats is because of heart health, not because of weight gain. If that were true, people would not lose on the Atkins diet, and they obviously do. I've done that diet myself and lost weight, so I know it can be done.
I believe in heart health, but I also don't believe that one piece of regular sausage once in a while, or even regular fat cheese will keep you from losing weight.
That is my opinion, and that is how I look at this way of eating. |

Sugar and starch do not get added back in P3. There is no food list for P3.
Summary: Once dieters have lost all the weight they want to, they proceed to Phase Three, where the variety of foods is liberalized still further and weight is maintained. The change from Phase Two is not very great, however.
What You Eat: In the original book, Agatston says that the knowledge gained in the first two phases will guide eating and that “there is no food list for Phase Three”. However, the Good Fats Good Carbs Guide has lists of food with codes as to how often they are “allowed” in each phase. Essentially, the recommendations tend to be that a few foods (with either more carbs or saturated fat) can be eaten somewhat more often, but otherwise it’s very similar to Phase Two.
While I agree that heart health is a great reason to avoid foods like sausage, there are twice as many calories, gram for gram, in fat than in protein or carbohydrate...which is why low fat diets work (they aren't sustainable, but that's another issue entirely). |

Madly, since some people in your group are interested in your experiment, it might be helpful to if you add a link to it in your signature. Then they can find it easily by looking at any of your posts (including the old ones in your group's thread, because it will update everywhere when you add it.) |

Sorry folks, I am abandoning this journal.
Good luck to everyone. I'm still going to be eating SB and doing my experiment (by the way, I've lost another pound), but I won't be posting or visiting the SB boards anymore. |

two thoughts for you (since your already so POed you're leaving anyway I'll have my say
You are NOT doing SBD. you may be doing YOUR modified version of what SBD is intended to be but don't say your doing SBD.... that is a great injustice to all of those folks that do the plan properly
secondly, folks here were just trying to help you see things that you may or may not be seeing... best of luck to you. |
