From Nate:
Today is day 2 of phase 1 for us. We decided on this diet since we eat gluten free anyway. We also have a wedding coming up in November so we want to make sure we are looking our best for the big day.
I am at 194 and I want to lose 25 pounds. Deni wants to lose 20. It's only been one day so we haven't weighed in again.
So far it hasn't been too difficult to stay on track this weekend. We generally make eggs and bacon for breakfast on the weekends and for dinner we had bunless turkey burgers and broccoli.
I think my biggest worry is my lunches. I'm pretty good when we eat together, but by myself i tend towards the fast food or quick microwaveable stuff. For monday i'm planning on having a salad. |

From Deni:
Yay, we have reached Day 4 of Phase 1 and still going strong. I have celiac disease and it has been a little tough to give up potatos and corn but it needs to be done. I have been feeling so unhealthy recently and my acid reflux was starting to come back.
I weigh about 140 and I am 5'0. This puts me in the overweight category and my healthy weight is between like 107-120 or something like that. It is a daunting number to think of. I dont think I have weighed that since sometime in junior high or younger.
I was on Atkins in college and did fantastic on it. I went from 160 to 128 but then the celiac diagnosis hit and things on my body went haywire especially my weight. Even when i was a hardcore Atkins, i couldnt get below about 127.
Nate is doing good although he is really hungry at lunch at work. We need to think of work lunches that dont need to be refrigerated for him.
Thanks for reading! |

From Nate:
It's day 6 now. I have been making the circuit of places that serve salads in the area close to work. I decided to eliminate any fast food places that serve those prepackaged salads since i heard they were just as bad as having one of their burgers. This left 3 places, the supermarket salad bar, a local sandwich shop, and Subway.
The supermarket wasn't too bad. I was able to make my own so i knew i was going to get enough to fill me. The only problem was options. Out of this entire salad bar, the only thing that were ok for phase 1 was lettuce, broccoli, chicken, hard boiled egg, and mushrooms. Everything else was "fancy" stuff that involved noodles, lots of mayo, or rice. So I loaded up my little plastic bowl with the stuff i could eat and paid 4 bucks for it. It wasn't too bad.. not very flavorful, and i was hungry again about 2 and a half hours later.
The next day i tried the local sandwich shop. Their salads were much better then the supermarket. They had everything the market had (minus egg) plus tomato and olives. The chicken they put on top was great, a much higher quality in taste. The downside.. it cost a lot more... close to 6 bucks. I got hungry again about 4 hours later so it either filled me up more, or my stomach is shrinking... probably both.
Today was Subway day. I saw that they pretty much make salads just like they do subs.. minus the bread. I went with the turkey and got pretty much everything else for the salad part. I like how this place has onion and green pepper. It also came with saltine crackers which i donated to the "hungry coworker fund". The price was only 5 bucks so quite good for what you get... this thing is so big i could hardly finish it. I don't anticipate being hungry until well after 5.
I weighed myself this morning, even though i was told i shouldn't, and i came in at 187. I'm sure some of that is water weight, but still.. it's nice to see the 180's. Haven't been there in years. |

From Deni:
I guess we are at Day 11 now. Wow, that seems like a long time but then again not so much. We both weighed in last week and Nate was down 6 pounds and I was down 2. I am familiar with my body and how the weight fluctuates, so i am not celebrating too much yet.
All i am going on is that I feel great. My body feels like it is just stable all the time, no strange fluctuations, no crashes in the late afternoon at work and no intense "give me chocolate now" cravings. I do hope this hits the scale though since our wedding is in a few months.
Last night we got Wii Fit and both weighed in and played. It was incredibly depressing to see my adorable Mii character turn into this fat slob who waddles, but so it is. My weight on the Wii was what my starting weight was, so I am a bit discouraged since it has been 11 days and there has potentially been no change. How much broccoli do I have to eat?!?
Anyway, the game was a lot of fun and also challenging. 10 minutes of hula hoop and i can definitely feel my abs today.
Thanks for listening! |

Deni:
I am starting to wonder whether my goal weight is still too high. I am 27 years old and 5 feet tall exactly. I have been reading some stuff about weight and I know that I am going to hit the not overweight mark when i get to be about 127, but then I hear about people wanting to be 105-110. Am I aiming for a too high weight?
I have never been below 125 in my adult life and probably not even all through high school. I dont know how to get that low. |

| Hi Deni, good job with sticking to the diet plans, that's been my hardest thing. I really wouldn't even say I've followed the SBD yet. My opinion on your weight goal would be to focus on BMI over weight. Of course you will lose both by losing weight, if you exercise you will gain muscle adding to your weight and it could be deceiving with your overall progress. You might be more fit but thinking you're gaining weight. If you kept track of the BMI you would see it lowering. You could be 120lbs and 5'0 but be ripped and tone. |

I wouldn't worry about the goal weight you have picked yet. Get down to 127 and see how things are going. Do you feel good, do you think you can lose more, etc?
Then re-evaluate things. I set a goal for myself and I think I can go lower. But I'm waiting until I hit or close in on that weight before readjusting. The height weight BMI calculator i used says that I'm still borderline overweight at my goal.
As for the Wii fit scale. Keep in mind all scales are different. Pick a scale and only use that one for your 'official' weigh in. Also try to do it at the same time of day. I do it in the morning right before jumping in the shower. That way I don't need to worry about clothes or what I've eaten that day changing things on me.
Nate:
About being hungry a few hours later. That's what the snacks are designed to help with. Is there a reason you can't have a quick snack a few hours after you eat lunch? It can be as simple as a handful of nuts. Those travel well ie no fridge needed. |

Deni:
Well we have hit Phase 2 and I have had major slip-ups. I went to Islands yesterday after shopping for bridesmaid dresses and had fries. I really tried not to but they are a huge weakness and a trigger. I guess its good that i recognize that now and can attempt to not put myself into these situations.
Today at work they ordered chinese and i had chicken (not fried, plain) with snow peas. Very healthy although it came with a massive amount of white rice. I requested brown but they didnt have it. So i had some of the white rice since it attached itself to the chicken and a couple of forkfuls. I need to get back on track. Should I progress onto Phase 2 after the slips or stay on Phase 1 a couple more days? |

| If you are in Phase 2 I would stay in it. I had a slip up this weekend. I exercised extra today and drank lots of water and I have maintained and not gained. |
