Kashi Cinnamon Harvest wheat cereal

One cup of Kashi Cinnamon Harvest whole wheat cereal (like mini-wheats) contains 5 grams of fiber but 9 grams of sugar (44 carbs total).

The sugar comes from "Evaporated Cane Juice", which I'm sure is bad... but with the high fiber does it lower it's GI? make it a bit more SBD friendly? Here's the entire ingredient list btw:
Organic Whole Wheat, Organic Evaporated Cane Juice, Organic Cinnamon, Natural Cinnamon Flavor
And the link to the site: http://www.kashi.com/products/organic_promise_cereal_cinnamon_harvest

Currently I eat Post's unfrosted mini wheat cereal (same fiber content, 0 grams sugar) occasionally, but it can be bland. Maybe I could mix the two?

Aren't our guidelines for cereal that it's supposed to have more than 5 grams of fiber and less than 8 grams of sugar per serving? (And yes, that's a question, not a criticism - I haven't had cold cereal yet on SB.)

Is the Post mini wheats made with 100% whole grain? If so I'll have to get some of those - I love shredded wheat type cereals, and I thought I couldn't have them anymore!

If that's the case, then it seems that mixing the two would be ok. However, I worry about the type of sugar (cane juice) as much as the sugar grams.

Yep. Whole Grain Wheat, BHT added to preserve flavor. Nutritional info at this link: http://www.kraftfoods.com/kf/Products/ProductInfoDisplay.htm?SiteId=&Product=4300018053&

It looks like the Cinnamon Harvest is just over the guidelines, but I think your idea of mixing it with another high-fiber cereal with little or no sugar would work fine.

Mixing cereals is a good strategy. The shredded wheat type cereals can be a little higher GI because of the form it's in, so mixing it with something like Uncle Sam works really well. It makes a good balance both glycemically and to the palate.

Actually, I was talking about mixing the Kashi shredded wheat with the Post shredded wheat. What do you mean when you say "shredded wheat type cereals can be a little higher GI because of the form it's in"? - the Post unfrosted shredded wheat seems like it would have a very low GI, it's just whole grain wheat (and BHT). Is there something about the way it's made that affects the GI?

yes. the shredding creates more surface area so it digests more quickly than cereals that are denser in nature. puffed cereals suffer from the same effect and are also not a great idea for SB purposes. Ever try uncle sam's? that's what I use as my "base" to mix in other cereals with and used to use these kashi squares as a "garnish" as well. And I think only the shredded wheat and bran is on the cereals list in Kim's FAQ, not the plain shredded wheat, but I could be wrong about that. It's an older list when the guideline was for equal to or more than 8 gms of fiber, not 5 gms.

Thanks for the info everyone. I just learned a lot - I was just looking at the fiber and sugar grams, I never thought about the shredding aspect of it. I've never tried Uncle Sam's - I've looked for it because I've seen it mentioned on these forums, but it's not available at the grocery stores I shop (I don't shop WalMart). I'll check out the cereals list in Kim's FAQ as you recommend - I like to have cereal available for a quick breakfast when I don't have time to cook.

Do you guys have Kroger there? I can find it in our larger Kroger stores.

I wish we did. I moved here from Atlanta where there were Krogers seemed to be on every corner. Publix is growing in this area, I'm surprised that Kroger hasn't followed.

I mix about 4 boxes of cereal together. It varies according to my shopping experience, but in general this is what I mix:

Kashi Go Lean or Kashi Good Friends
Fiber One
Kashi Heart to Heart (my splurge because I loved Cheerios)
A SB friendly Flax flakes cereal

When we are at our goal weight, I even add something a little more sinful--a little sweeter addition, like Fiber One Caramel or Go Lean Crunch. Neither of these two are Phase 2 allowed foods. But, I figure that we don't get much of either one after I mix them into the other boxes.

PS I store my mixture in a plastic pour container (large hole for pouring out), and what doesn't fit in that container goes into double plastic bags.
