I've noticed that there are quite a few people here who wish to lose a lot of weight (100+ lbs), and the SBD lifestyle must be quite a change for many. I'm just curious about everyone's eating habits before the ultimate decision to change your lifestyle and lose weight.
Did you frequent McDonald's or spend your evenings on the sofa surrounded by pizza and ice cream? Share the horrendous stories of your past with the rest of us!

Breakfast = 2 bagels with cream cheese and jelly or 2 donuts
Lunch = turkey club with fries, milkshake, cookie
Dinner = 1/2-3/4lb pasta with jar sauce, few rows of Oreos
or takeout for any of the above
Exercise has changed more than eating.
I would go back to it if I could even after 5 years. Tasty stuff. |

We ate whatever we felt like.
Not always fast food, but frequenlty pizza, carry-out, etc... We'd often eat pasta - lots and lots of it. It would not be unheard of for my rommate and I to eat an entire box (is that a pound?!) of angel-hair pasta with dinner. We also love casseroles - I'd often throw together rice, cheese, cream soups, and some sausage to make a cheesy dinner casserole. If it was a good day we'd throw in a can of veggies. Lots of mexican food - tacos, enchiladas, TONS of cheese. Breakfast was almost all starch - fried potatoes, biscuits and gravy, or danish or doughnuts.
Even our "healthy" days weren't so healthy - we'd pile on full fat cheese and buttery croutons on our salads. We'd cook our fresh veggies in lots of butter. We'd cover our fish in cheese and oil.
I almost always had ice cream around - bad, full-fat versions and I ate them by the pint. Or if I was craving chocolate I'd eat full-fat puddings, or worse - donuts.
Ick - I haven't been perfect this last month, but looking back on how I ate before? I'm amazed I survived to 31! |

Wow you make it sound like everyone is lazy and eats pizza all time...
Not in my case, I love food in general and lot of good food at that, I just have no portion control.
We might have fast food once or twice a month at the most.
I don't even like pasta nor potatoes. Mine is sweets! No I would not eat a whole cake either, but I could eat a whole cake in a weeks time.
Anyway....I am sure this is a drastic change for some but me it's all about moderation. |

| Many people would consider going from eating a whole cake in a week to SBD a pretty drastic change. |

Ladyfingers, I didn't mean to sound harsh. Of course I understand that being overweight might not mean fast food at all, but I just have to wonder what people with BMIs around 40 or 50 are eating.
I've never been obese but my food habits have been awful even when trying to lose weight. I have tried calorie counting for years, and at times, I would just eat anything the daily calorie amount allowed. I mean, I could just eat chocolate, crisps, bread and pasta for days, and just measure the portions, so that the calorie limit wouldn't be crossed (and often it was). The quantity mattered over quality to me.
Now I've learned the importance of protein, especially since I'm a vegetarian and it's easy to leave it out. Now I try to eat more beans, nuts, tofu and other soy products, even though tofu is a bit expensive. |

I didn't think OP sounded harsh - I hate to admit to myself how the bad habits crept back - I went from eating good P2, to having a 'treat' meal, then a couple of treat meals, then my work schedule changed, it was nearly 7 before I'd get home and son in practice till 9 or 10, so it was easier to grab a burger for myself, or go late and get something to go...then it got easier to not pack lunch and soon I was going twice a week not once, then 3 times, then every day...I had good excuses for it - too busy, working second job on weekends, to hard to cook with people coming and going...and eating out went from salad to sandwich, to sandwich with fries....and we won't even talk about the bedtime snacks. my SO would order a pizza at midnight and I'd end up nibbling even who I don't like pizza!!!
So changes have included less money going into bad for me food!!! and not really craving those things as often as I would have thought - I have to walk away from the sweets in the kitchen and when my cube mate brought in long john silvers I wanted to grab the crunchies and run!!! |

I can't remember truth be told. I've been trying to find a "good" food plan for several years, not knowing I was insulin resistant and that "diets" wouldn't help this. For the most part I've been reading labels and trying to eat "right" for maybe 6 or 8 years now. BUT..I wasn't really diligent about exercise. I'd "try" it for awhile without much success. Then came this new year of '08 and I was attempting a low-fat food plan and was gaining weight...even with exercise. Then after research found SB and began in March...to date (I haven't weighed in over a week) I've lost 14 lbs.!! I try to work in exercise, at least 3 times a week...if I get more in BONUS!!!!
I've purged our pantry, fridge and freezer of all the trigger foods (box mixes, "treats", processed foods etc.) We have the empty nest so that helps immensely as well. If my husband wants his own stash he buys it and keeps it out of sight. I cook for both of us the way I want to eat, but give him a bit of potato and items he might like now and then as he didn't ask to be included in my plan.
I can say that years ago though, I baked and kept alot of dessert items on hand. We also had chips in the cupboard and when we ate out I'd have the standard fare of the restaurant. Given a choice I'd choose the high-fat, fried and processed kinds of things! But it seems (even with being over-weight) that I've been "on a diet" for most of my life!!!! |

I remember sitting in front of the computer and polishing off a half a bag of Doritos. Nacho Bell Grande with extra meat and extra cheese and a medium blizzard. Four slices of pizza plus a few breadsticks w/ cheese. While this wasn't an everyday thing or anything, it was more often than necessary. Don't forget holidays. I couldn't even count the cookies and candies and cakes. It was obscene. When I was pregnant, i gained over 40 and closer to 50 pounds. I was pregnant 3 times too.
I still like ice cream but I measure it now if I have any. Cookies are a big no no for me because it is a trigger food but I ate plenty of little debbie stuuf back in the day. Oatmeal cream pies and Fudge Rounds all the time.
Oh, and I don't think I ever bought a veggie or fruit that I can think of. My house is FULL of them now. I have all of these in my house right now. Either fresh, canned or frozen.
Spaghetti squash
green beans
green,red and yellow peppers
onions
lettuce and salad mix
celery
carrots
parsnips
greens
mixed veggies
broccoli
tomatoes
beans
and a few starchy veggies I'm sure like corn canned.
I'll probably get some squash sunday too.
This was never the case 3 years ago. Never! |

My eating habits were out of control. Like big time. A typical day would consist of :
Breakfast - 4 rounds of maltese bread (looks like italian, those big loaves), toasted with loads of melted butter and jam, or ham and cheese
Lunch - fast food
Dinner - whatever mom cooked
In between ... another 4 sandwiches grilled cheese with loads of butter, bags of crisps, chocolate. .. twice or three times a week i would go to mcdonalds at midnight and spend like 12 euros easily ... 20pack nuggets with large fries and coke and a quarter pounder. Or else I would get a large pizza. This was usually eaten after eating dinner (mom's)
Donuts .. I would buy 6 and eat them all. Always had a problem controlling portions .. I would walk into a shop and get lost looking lustfully at the menu .. and I end up ordering a little bit of everything just so as not to miss out on anything.
Yes ... it was that horrible. Totally out of control. Like I would be at work, and buy 10 small bags of chips and eat them, one after the other. I would eat a whole tub of ben and jerries without any problems.
I'm so glad I'm past that ... at least now when I overeat .. I don't do this massacre to myself anymore! |

I've always had a sweet tooth and I've always loved burgers and fries, pizza, etc more than salad. I could bring myself to eat fruit, but often 'forgot' to eat veggies. I can eat large quantities of past and bread.
After I quit smoking, I avoided indulgent foods for a couple of weeks, as I was afraid they would give me cigarette craving too big to be resisted. One day, I had some chocolate, and the sugar high made me feel better than I had since I quit [having also given up coffee, I was/am sleeping 10-12 hours per day]. I started eating a lot more chocolate and donuts [mmmmmmmm donuts], took up eating cinnamon buns [mmmmmmm cinnamon buns], and started my quest to find the perfect ginger cookie recipe [successful :D ]. Then I took up making bread, and ate my delicious results. My eating was getting compulsive and I could feel myself gaining weight and losing control.
Finally, I started bloating, and a LOT more than I ever had before. Suddenly, my clothes didn't fit and I was incredibly uncomfartable. I was down to 2 pairs of trousers that fit, and I refused to go buy some larger clothes as I knew that would be the beginning of the end for me.
That was 10 days ago. I decided to try SB and have substabtially debliated. I have eaten more veg in one week than I would have on more than a month. My cravings are under control, more or less: at least I haven't fallen off the plan. I'm glad for the chance to get a handle on cravings and readjust my tastebuds. |

My eating habits were pretty good except for the higher carb intake. Since I am insulin resistant, plain old carbs in potatoes, pasta and bread(not white bread) were/are my problem.I'm not a sweet eater and I don't like sweet soda pop.
The 45 pounds I have gained has happened over the last 5 years. It was an extra piece of bread, a second helping of spaghetti or a large baked potato with my meal.
I also stopped excercising and limited my activity to housework and my job.I am active but not pushing myself.
Also, being over 50 has not helped. I could get away with the above when I was younger but not now.

Last semester my boyfriend and I ordered pizza every night! I gained about 15 pounds
I also tend to be a stress-eater, and trying to get into medical school is stressing enough! When I would pull all-nighters, I would surround myself with cookies, ice cream, candy...any kind of glucose for my brain to work. Boy did I learn the hard way! |

I think I mostly killed my metabolism, by eating NOTHING most of the day (or maybe a junky snack), and then pigging out on unhealthy dinners.
If you feed a dead metabolism junk food, you're gonna balloon like crazy! lol
I never ate breakfast (but now I know better, you can't get your metabolism going without a healthy breakfast). Lunch was always something like chips, or candy. Dinner was always TONS of bad carbs (Italian food, fast food, Chinese, etc.).
And then I got married!! lol. That's when it really got bad... I lost 100 lbs before, but I gained it all back after I met my husband. Because he's a BIG eater (although he stays in good shape, no matter what he eats).
He's also from India, and culturally, they are cooking and eating all the time.... For them, its just unheard of to call friends over, or have a party, that doesn't focus around a large meal. Seriously, on an average, they will cook chicken, 2 or 3 kinds of seafood, several vegetable dishes, and a rice dish--- all just for one dinner! And they'll eat ALL of it, too. Pretty much every day.
So even now, I do struggle, as hubby sees no need to change his eating habits because he's fine, weight wise. So he continues to bring home GOBS of restaurant food (or he invites all his Indian friends over, and they cook up big heaps of food). 90% of the time, they just pile it all on the dining room table, and sit there for HOURS, socializing.
And here I am, trying to maintain healthy eating habits in the midst of that, hehe. Sometimes, I just have to be an anti-social and go sit at the computer, or watch TV in the other room, because they never leave the table, and I don't want to sit there with them, while every edible under the sun stares me in the face, lol. It's not really productive to my cause, ya know?
Although I wish they didn't stay gathered around the food all the time, because to them, it's insulting for the host to be inhospitable, or neglect the guests. But I don't have a lot of options, because I can't change all of them, I can only change myself, lol. |
