so ...this is my 5th week on the sbd and i was wondering, when can we all have a beer or two and relax about it? ...

i have not touched a drop of alcohol for all these 5 weeks....it's been so hard since a nice cold beer after work or at a barbecue is oh so nice.....
on saturday my friend is throwing a barbecue party, and i would love to have a beer or two....but oh the fear....but isn't sbd supposed to be a lifestyle?......well, I definitely know I can't not ever touch beer for the rest of my life.

12 oz of light beer is permissible in phase 1 occasionally.

Yes, you're allowed to drink. You can have 1-3 (depending on where you read) glasses of wine, beer, or liquor a day in P2. You should always have them with/after food, so that you don't absorb it too fast. Light beer is better than regular (dark beers are even better, but many people don't like them.) If you're going to have liquor, it shouldn't be a liqueur and the mixer should be sugar free.

Obviously, it's better if you DON'T drink every day, but a little bit isn't going to hurt you! This IS a plan for life, so it's a livable plan. Congrats on going so long without drinking, but enjoy some (not too much!) at the party, and feel good knowing that you're not screwing up your new lifestyle!

thank you so much for the support.
...it's so hard thinking i could have a beer or two, and not feel guilty about it....but i think it's about time. And, I don't drink every week or anything...

I know you meant to type P2! ;) no alcohol at all in P1.

I'm surprised he ignored the studies on the heart healthy properties of stouts and dark beers, being a cardiologist and all. I really think he's probably just a red wine snob! ;)

Heh - I bet RedRox will have something to say!

Surprisingly, most dark beers are lower in calories and carbs than regular beer, and have more antioxidants. Just enjoy them as any alcohol - with or after food, and in moderation!

yes, i've posted on this quite a bit over time! ;) Do a search on "stout" with me as the author sometime! ;)

There was a study done at the university of wisconsin (surprise!) that found that stouts and dark beers had many of the same antioxidant properties of red wine. (they were also among the researchers who studied the links between red wine, antioxidants and health as well though). I also never understood if we are not a carb counting plan, why the amount of carbs in beer matter? It's all empty calories and the issue is with the alcohol itself and what it does to blood chemistry, not the carbs. And as many chemical analyses of beer show, there is no maltose in it either (or virtually any other sugars) as the good doc originally alleged and subsequently got sued over. While I was happy to see him add the occasional beer back in to the P2 beverage list, I was disappointed he didn't recognize the possible health advantages of dark beers over light ones.

FWIW, when I do enjoy a cereal malt beverage, I do try to make it a stout, porter or at least a darker beer.

I just entered phase 2 and I had to sit around work all day yesterday with cookies in the office and not have any. Then when I got off work, my wife was set up at a festival (she's an artist and a crafter) and right across the isle from her was the Fellowship of Oklahoma Ale Makers (FOAM) and I was so depressed because they had 1 oz beer samples and I didn't think i could have any. I'm a homebrewer and thought I had to wait till phase 3 to sample my new Wheat Beer...you guys made my day!

I had no idea that we could enjoy an occasional beer on SB.
Cool!
What are your thoughts on Michelob Ultra?
I like that brew and it is a bonus that is low carbs/low cal...........
Thoughts? I don't have an ingredient list or nutritional content but I am hoping that is is the lesser of the two evils.

Thanks all

My wife likes the ulta amber, but not the plain. I don't like either. But they both meet the new guidelines! ;)

Also, just wanted to add the standard caveat to my above post that dark beers are not on the current list and it's my own personal choice.
