I’ve been wondering where the Diet Journal section was, figured there must be one.

I’m on Day 9 of Phase 1. 36 year old guy, 6 foot and 200 pounds. I don’t really have a weight loss goal, just looking to live a little healthier, at least for a while. For my whole life, my philosophy has been to eat as much as I can of whatever tastes good, never exercise for the purpose of exercise, and assume my metabolism will sort it out. This has generally worked all right for me, though I have recognized that my pattern would need to change at some point. What prompted me to start dieting now is an early June sporting event in which I will participate for fun. Because I want to enjoy it, and I’m fairly competitive, I want to get in better shape beforehand. Once the event is over, will I continue on SBD? Maybe, I don’t know.

I live a half-mile from the local high school, which has a track that is open to the public before school. I’ve gone running 3 non-consecutive days now, hoping to make it a daily event. I walk to and from the track for warm up and cool down (0.5 + 0.5 = 1 mile). The first day I ran for 0.5 miles, the second day for 0.75, and today I ran for 1.0. I would like to add 0.25 a day until I get to 2.0, and then when I’m comfortable with 2.0 I’d like to add in sprints on the straightaways. Reading this, it sounds kind of matter-of-fact, but you have to understand that doing anything for the purpose of exercise is totally alien to me.

On Friday, I had two hard boiled eggs and some V8 for breakfast. Cashews and string cheese for snack. Tandoori chicken, lentils, chickpeas, and celery for lunch. LF turkey lunchmeat and LF laughing cow cheese for snack. At night, I went to the opera. There was nothing at the snack bar I could eat for intermission. I had a salad with garbanzo beans, kidney beans, and avocado and a glass of milk for late dinner, skipped dessert.

This weekend was tough because we were constantly out celebrating Mother’s Day with various factions of the family at restaurants where the dishes were shared family-style. Saturday, I had 2 hard boiled eggs and V8 for breakfast. Morning snack was celery. For lunch, we went to an eat-all-you-want seafood buffet. I had sashimi, seaweed, veggies, and some NY steak. Afternoon snack was sunflower seeds. We went to a Chinese restaurant for dinner. I had steamed catfish, sauteed lobster, shrimp, and snow pea shoots.

Saturday night I felt very strange, kind of jittery. I felt like I had consumed a lot of caffeine (though in fact I had none). Very restless trying to get to sleep. I think maybe the catfish sauce had some sugar in it and my body was reacting to it.

On Sunday, I had an omelette with salmon, bell peppers, and avocado for breakfast. I missed my morning snack because I woke up late and didn’t have breakfast until 10am. Lunch was leftover salad from Friday night. Afternoon snack was peanuts. For dinner, we went to another Chinese restaurant. I had some braised fish, shrimp, plus lots of veggies - broccoli, snow peas, asparagus. For dessert, some SF jello.

I haven’t noticeably lost weight yet on P1. Before I started SBD, my weight on any given day would fluctuate between 195 and 205. The day I started, I was 201. Weighing myself daily at the same time of day, I’ve been as low as 198. Today I was 199.5. I think my stomach may be a little tighter, but I may just be imagining it.

I'm getting really sick of salads. I've never been much of a salad person. I could not eat salad again for the rest of the year and be quite happy. Of course, I'll probably have it again before the end of the week.

Breakfast this morning was leftovers from my salmon omelette. Hummus and celery for morning snack. For lunch I've been going to this upscale build-your-own salad and assorted food bar, which gives a nice opportunity for selecting stuff. I had steamed fish, hanger steak, shrimp & avocado, steamed asparagus, and a salad. You can have wide variety by taking a couple bites of a lot of things. Afternoon snack was cashews and string cheese.

Dinner was kind of a downer. We went to Round Table, and I had no pizza. Just the salad bar, which was kind of a sad salad bar. SF jello for dessert.

I just can't wake up in the morning. The weather is nice, like summertime already. My alarm goes off and I think, "I have to go run, I have to go run . . ." but I just lay there until I'm almost late for work.

Yesterday's menu:

B: V8, 2 hard boiled eggs
S1: Raw mushrooms and hummus
L: Chili and side salad with avocado
S2: Cashews and string cheese
D: Roast pork, hummus, artichokes w/ jalapeno ranch dressing
S3: Jello

On Tuesday morning, I was 195.5. This morning I was 196. Although that's still within my pre-SBD weight fluctuation, I'm going to call it down from 199.5 on Monday.

Wed May 14, 2008 5:42 pm

B: V8, cheese
S1: Cheese
L: Chicken stir fry, broccoli, green beans
S2: Cashews, cheese
D: Shrimp, brussel sprouts, hummus wih avocado and tomato
S3: Jello

A lot of cheese today. I'm running out of groceries, need to go shopping again.

B: V8, string cheese
S1: celery, string cheese
L: steamed fish, chinese broccoli, salad, tofu
S2: macadamia nuts
D: NY steak, steamed broccli, beans
S3: cheddar cheese

Went to a concert last night, Crowded House. I usually would have a drink or two, but I skipped the alcohol.

I've been hanging tough at 195 for my morning weigh-in the last couple days.

On Saturday, I celebrated finishing Phase I with an ice cream at Coldstone Creamery. The rest of the day I was still good under P1 standards.

On Sunday, I started off well: omelette and V8 for breakfast, cheese and celery snack. Then we went to Waterworld waterpark and I had a funnel cake with ice cream and a diet Coke. Pretty much nothing beneficial there. For dinner, pork loin and zucchini.

Two off-diet days in a row. And yet... I'm still losing weight. Down to 191 this morning. That's down 9 pounds in 18 days. Time to be good for a while. I'm on my first business travel trip since starting SBD, away for a week. I brought a bunch of snacks.

So maybe this is strange, but I am actually finding it easier to follow SBD while on business travel because I'm already going out every meal.

Monday

B: V8 and canadian bacon at home before leaving
S1: Cheese
L: Went to an Italian deli for lean roast beef, LF cheese, calamari salad, green olives
S2: Leftovers from lunch
D: Fajitas with no tortillas
S3: Peanuts

Tuesday

B: Ham and veggie omelette
S1: Leftover roast beef, celery
L: Feta salad
S2: Cheese and peanuts
D: Sashimi, seaweed salad, lettuce cups with thai beef

Dinner last night was at this Asian fusion place. The lettuce cups were great: greenleaf lettuce, chopped flank steak, avocado, cucumber, with drizzled thai curry. Yum!

I haven't been exercising. The hotel has both an exercise room and a pool, but I just haven't been there yet.

No scale here either, so I don't know how much I weigh. Hopefully the same or less.

Wednesday

B/S1 Hard boiled eggs and vegetables
L Roast beef, vegetables, salad, vegetarian beans
S2 Cheese
D Menudo, lengua quesadilla without the tortilla
S3 Peanuts, cheese

I'm on a business trip where we meet daily in a hotel conference room (different hotel than where I'm staying). I found out that they do a "side salad" which is one trip through their salad bar. I did that for breakfast grazing into a mid-morning snack, loading up on hard boiled eggs, raw broccoli, cucumbers, mushrooms, and cherry tomatoes. Works pretty well, and it's only $4.

I've run out of the food supplies I brought with me, except for peanuts. I kind of want to go to a grocery store, but the week is almost over. I still have a little bit of string cheese left too.

Went to the movies for the first time since starting SBD ("Forbidden Kingdom"). I didn't have any food to bring with me, so I just had nothing.

Dinner was bad. I went to an authentic Mexican place and treated myself to some non-lean meats. I had menudo, which is a spicy broth with tripe, and beef tongue quesadillas. At least I skipped the tortillas and didn't have any sour cream.

I got in some exercise last night finally too. I swam six laps and this morning I have some sore leg muscles that apparently I only use while swimming.

Thu May 22, 2008 5:52 pm

B/S1: salad bar veggies
L: beef kebab with tomato sauce, bulgur, salad, tahn
S2: string cheese
D: steamed striped bass, chinese broccoli
S3: peanuts

Finally made it to the end of the week. I get to go home for the 3-day weekend, then I'm back here again. At least I'll have a chance to do laundry and restock veggies.

For lunch I had Armenian food at a little deli, pretty tasty. The kebabs came with bulgur and rice, but I got all bulgur instead. Tahn is a cold drink made with plain yogurt, ice, and water. I didn't really care for the taste, but it was worth trying. It also got my dairy in, which I've been having trouble doing here. Apparently this town doesn't believe in 1% milk. I had a few chances at 2% and passed, but in hindsight I think I should have just had the 2% rather than skip milk altogether. I just kept assuming that surely SOMEWHERE would have 1%. By the time I concluded that really nobody does, I thought about just buying some at the supermarket but at that point it was almost the end of my business trip.

I still haven't done any running this week. Bad.

Hi Remillard,

It sounds like you really find great ways to eat well on SBD. That is great -- and while traveling as well! Good for you!

I've been having a hard time getting up to run this week, too. Mostly it's the weather... I hate to go out in the rain.

Thanks, Ilsita! I consider myself a foodie, and it has been challenging finding a wide variety of ways to still feel satisfied gourmet-wise yet stay within the parameters of SBD.

I've been really bad about updating my journal, what with the 3-day weekend and general work busyness. It figures... the first time a visitor to my journal posts something, I disappear for a week.

Friday, I had peanuts and cheese for breakfast/S1. At lunch, I found a great Laotian restaurant. I had beef punh (lettuce wraps with bean sprouts, sliced cucumbers, and chopped tomatoes), diet coke for lunch, and got takeout for a heavy S2 before I did a 3 hour drive home. The S2 was shrimp, crab, and squid mixed with chili peppers, onions, and basil. I didn't go straight home, instead went to the hospital to visit my grandfather in ICU (ulcer, he's doing fine now). I got home late and had grilled salmon, ww toast and salad for dinner, peach for dessert (I bought a whole basket of peaches from a roadside fruit stand on my way home).

Saturday I made whole wheat waffles and salmon/veggie omelettes for breakfast, plus V8. S1 macadamia nuts. Lunch was broccoli and hummus, milk. S2 peach. Dinner was at a restaurant: ceviche, miso glazed black bass, bok choy, glass of red wine. Cheese for dessert.

Sunday

B salmon/veggie omelette leftovers, V8
S1 cheese
L hummus and snow peas
S2 apple
D whole wheat penne with meat sauce, milk
S3 mixed nuts

Went to see Indiana Jones at night, had a diet coke and nothing to eat.

Monday

B V8
S1 nuts
L artichokes, dipped in jalapeno ranch dressing
S2 part of an avocado, apple
D shrimp, filet mignon and lobster, veggies, diet coke at Benihana. I also splurged and had their chicken fried (white) rice.
S3 cheese

Tuesday

Back on the road for a business trip.

B V8, peach. meant to eat something more substantial before leaving home, but rushed out the door.
S1 peanuts, cheese
L shrimp punh (like beef punh described above), diet coke
S2 pork lop (pork with chili peppers and onions)
D grilled sandabs, veggies
S3 cheese

Wednesday

B peach
S1 peanuts, cheese
L feta salad with lamb kebab and hummus
S2 peach
D back home for dinner: steak and steamed broccoli
S3 jello

Thursday

B V8, 2 hard boiled eggs
S1 apple
L Cobb salad (substituted garbanzo for bacon) with grilled salmon
S2 hummus and whole wheat bread
D Steak and steamed broccoli, part of an avocado

I continue to be really bad about running, haven't done so for about a week and a half. I had gotten up to 1 mile walking, 1.25 miles running with a little bit of a sprint. I don't have time to run, most nights lately I'm only getting less than 5 hours of sleep (it's 3:20am as I'm typing).

Adjusting to P2 has been harder than I thought, perhaps because I've been on the road. Adding fruits back in has not been that hard (mostly peaches and apples). What's been more difficult is getting in the whole grains. I haven't found any restaurants while on the road that offer them. At home, I've had ww pasta, ww bread, ww waffles -- but at most 1 serving a day. Difficult to work up to 3 servings a day. Interestingly, I don't think I've had any kashi or quinoa since starting SBD. I used to have them pretty regularly before SBD, gave them up for P1, and for whatever reason haven't gotten back around to having them for P2 (perhaps because I've been on the road a lot lately).

Last few days I've weighed 192.

Friday was a rough day at work. Good thing I had snacks at my desk, or I wouldn't have eaten anything. No formal breakfast or lunch, just some macadamia nuts, string cheese, and celery. I got home and had some hummus and ww bread for snack, then a chicken/garlic/shallot/brussel sprout stirfry and milk for dinner, jello for dessert.

Weighed 188 yesterday, 187.5 this morning (down 12 pounds from start).

Saturday

B V8, apple
S1 Macadamia nuts, cheese
L Subway sandwich insides, diet coke
S2 Hummus and ww bread
D Grilled lamb, red wine
S3 Jello

Sunday

B Veggie omelette, tomato juice, hash browns (!)
L Milk, cheese, hummus, snow peas
S Apple, mixed nuts
D tandoori chicken, lamb kebab & spinach, lentils, chicken tikka masala, diet coke

Bad weekend, low on veggies and I had some hash browns (first potatoes since going on SBD). No exercise either. I did go to a concert (REM, Modest Mouse). Back up to 191 on the scale Monday morning.

Mon Jun 02, 2008 4:15 pm

remillard

I'm sick. Been sick for a few days, nasty racking cough. I don't think it's SBD-related, just one of those weird (almost) summer colds.

Monday

B V8
S1 Cheese and nuts
L Chili, salad with edamame, jicama, feta, diet coke
S2 Apple
D Sashimi, seaweed salad, miso soup, strawberries, creme brulee (!)

I've been having a very hard time increasing to 3 servings of fruit or whole grains a day. I'm managing more like 0-1. I've never been much of a breakfast person, so lately I've been having just V8 for breakfast as I'm out the door, then I have a snack later in the morning once I'm in the office. Unless I bring something with me, it's pretty impossible to find whole grain food for lunch at nearby restaurants.

Tuesday, I started off with V8 for breakfast out the door per usual, but for my morning snack I had some steel cut oatmeal from a restaurant next door. I had it plain, figuring I shouldn't dump a mound of brown sugar on top like I normally do. Or even raisins.

I did a big grocery shopping trip last night to reload. I'm going to try the Kashi Go Lean Crunch. Maybe I can get that going as part of my normal breakast routine, would cover the milk too.

Tue Jun 03, 2008 4:24 pm
