| I have tried both atkins and SB. My sister has been on atkins for 2 years now and swears by it, but I did it for a month and felt like crap the whole time. I felt totally restricted as to what I could eat. I think the thing that gives atkins such a bad rap is that people assume that since you can have unlimited portions of meat, you can have any kind of meat. I know I was eating totally unhealthy when I was on atkins. Fatty beef and fatty pork meats are NOT good to have all the time on ANY diet, but when so many other things are cut out of atkins, you get sick of eating lean chicken and fish all the time and resort to the bad meat. With all of those bars and things they have now at McDonalds and everywhere else, atkins seems like the easy diet, but that stuff is still soooo fatty! Atkins can probably be a healthy diet, but it is really hard to stick to it in the way that you are supposed to. I have been on SB now for about 2 months and I love it. I don't feel deprived and although I have to go back to the first phase again (due to cheating on one too many camping trips) I think it will be even easier this time because I've learned some tricks about foods and stuff. The first two weeks is a little inconvenient, but worth it in the long run. I had to remember to pack lunches which is hard, but that way I don't eat junk while I'm at work. If I want to cheat really bad I cheat, but I don't do it often and when I'm done I get right back on. Everyone is different and obviously one diet doesn't work for everyone, but hope this extra input gives you more info to think about. |

Thanks for these posts about Atkins vs. South Beach. My husband and I successfully lost weight with Atkins...and it is not the diet's fault entirely that we fell off the wagon and went back to our old habits. We stayed on induction too long...and eventually got bored.
We've both gained all + more back and he's having trouble with his gall bladder. We have not done Atkins in at least 4-6 months, but it took its toll I guess. I'm hoping now that we have started SB in the "nick of time"....but I'm afraid his gall bladder may need surgery.
He went to his doctor yesterday---and started phase one too. I had started a day earlier than him--but he's on it now. He is good at staying on diets, but is definitely an overeater otherwise. I'm a sugarholic so I'm dealing with that as well.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated. |

I tried Atkins last year and went from 185 to 170, I believe we were on it as a family for about 5-6 weeks before they all caved and I joined them. Big mistake, lol.
I didn't stay on it long term so I really can't say.....

YAHOO!! I think my dh's pain in his side is going away. He had blood work done last week so we'll see if it's anything more.....
SB certainly feels healthier. I like the 3 meals, 2 snacks, and dessert plan. |

I was on Atkins 1.5 years ago - lost about 15#, but was an unholy b*tch the whole time (this according to family and friends). All I know is that when I gave up (you NEED carbs, no matter what they say), I gained all the weight back and then some.
Started SB a little over a month ago. So far -8#, but more importantly, I feel good. Good about what I'm eating, good about the fact that I've committed to exercise, good about the fact that I'm sleeping better...you name it. And to echo what others have said - as a society, we've processed all the goodness out of the food we eat. Empty, sweet calories lead to a nation both overweight and obsessed.
I was in Europe in the spring, and only saw ONE overweight person. People there eat fresh, unprocessed food, prepared in a healthy way, and they don't get behind the wheel of their car for every little thing - they walk or ride bikes as a matter of course. It's partially economics for them - cars are expensive, and gas is outrageous, but they are generally more healthy than us, and still enjoy their wine and bakeries. I'm hoping I can use them as an example! |

I did Protein Power (a ketogenic LC plan similar to Atkins) from January until May of last year and lost 30 pounds. When I was very dedicated I felt great and the weight fell off, but I really LOVE food and it became hard to say no to cultural and familial foods, as one "cheat" threw the scale up 5 pounds.
I feel like SBD is the most health-supporting weight loss plan out there and also the most sustainable - for me. My MIL has done Atkins for 2 years now and has lost weight, managed health problems and managed to stay on plan. Most diets out there work and the majority are healthful if followed correctly, but it comes down to what the individual can do long-term. |

I have been on Atkins for about 7 months now. I lost 45 lbs in the first 5 months and have been stalled for the past 2 month or so. I can't convince myself to go back to induction or backpedal through all the stages to find where I will unstall. I had noticed that SB was very similar in design...I agree we eat too much carbs and processed carbs....I became my heaviest ever after following the LF and carbs food pyramid way of eating...so I got the book and started to read. This makes way too much sense to me. I also feel the high fat and calories on Atkins is the bad part of the program. I think this was my stall culprit. I tremendously agree with the idea of increased fiber in our food is needed and also helps slow the absorbption of the carbs. Atkins states this is the reason for the fat content also. He is right in that fat does also do this. But I think he relies too heavily on the fat and that our bodies eventually adjust to the high fat and we end up with problems again. Fiber is definitely the key I think! And the fiber route opens up the door to being able to eat grains and fruits!!! Atkins does not have this liberal way of eating. I was up to berries, but wanted an apple or grapefruit!! Anyways, to get back on track....I started phase 2 way of eating SB....while reading the book for a couple of day (easing into my deprivation...LOL the 2 week induction scared me off of sudden change)...I had planned to start phase 1 on this past Monday (which I did)...anyways, just the phase 2 eating for half a week broke my stall and I show 3 lbs gone already. I am in day 4 of phase 1 and cant wait to see the scale next monday!!! On atkins I was taking vitamins, l-carnitine, and raw apple cider vinegar tonic, and no sugar...only use stevia (sweetleaf brand), no caffeine, decaf coffee, and lots of tea and water...now these combined with SB will get me going to a new way of life. At least I am learning sooooo much on this journey to the real me!!! :D I wont miss my red meats much, but i do like my hamburger...now in moderation on SB....but I think this will be the final phase in my weight loss journey...Then just on to enjoying my new life as a new me. !! :D
Here is my pics of the progress from my Atkins part of this trip....

I have been doing Atkins for a year. Went from size 44 to size 20. Very pleased with results but did hit one of those dreaded, long Atkin's stalls which lasted almost 4 months. I had to take antibiotics which cause a yeast imbalance resulting in a stall.
First, let me get on my soap box :D and tell you there is a right and a wrong way of doing Atkins. You MUST have carbs and we eat a lot of veggies low in carbs on induction. Then, we move into OWL (on going weight loss) and begin to increase carbs by adding a few more each week. Although Atkins does say fats are OK, eating nothing but bacon and fatty meats is bad and common sense should tell us so! I do eat bacon now and then. I also eat fatty cuts of meat--now and then! But I also eat lean cuts... Atkins himself warns of foods with nitrates and suggests limiting bacon, proccessed lunch meats, etc. Cheese is limited to 3 oz a day. Can you eat a lb of bacon and still lose? Yes. Should you? No. Can you eat just meats and lose? Yes. Should you? No. I have seen people who have abused Atkin's plan to the max and then complain Atkins gave them high cholesterol. Atkins, done PROPERLY and by the REVISED edition is a healthy lifestyle. It is a myth to think that on Atkins you have 3 steaks and no veggies. Or that trans fats are allowed. Or that you can never eat bread again, fruits or grains. I find the SB and Atkins plans to be alike, just adding back carbs differently is all. Both plans lead to the same place--healthier eating! By maintenance phase there is not much difference. SB is less fats but that is about the only difference in maintenance. And being bored doesn't have to happen. There are several websites with low carb recipes. I had to learn a whole new way of cooking but it was SO worth the effort!
Now, off my soap box, lol! I did have the stall from #&(% I mentioned so I recently switched to SB every other day. Worked like a charm--down 2 lbs this week! On SB days I watch my fat intake and have cereal and milk for breakfast. I wonder if alternating with Atkins would break a SB stall as well? Also, you are not really stalled unless you have lost no weight or inches for a consecutive 4 weeks. Anything less is simply an adjustment... |

I am happy to say today am down 7 pounds since switching to SB...goodbye stall. I agree, Atkins does work wonders. I lost weight sooo fast in the beginning. 14lbs my first two weeks on induction...but the fat and calorie content of a lot of the meats I was eating was what got me I think. Once I started up the ladder, I slowed down real fast. You might be right about Atkins & SB relationship...they might be wonderful hand in hand. Atkins gave me a better foundation for understanding my body and its relationship to sugars, insulin, and why that makes me fat. I will never go back to regular sugar again...stevia for life...even if i have to grow it myself! Lol So now armed with the basics....watch for hidden sugars, be selective with sugar alternatives, vegetables are our more friendly carbs-didnt know they were carbs before....and a load of yummy and inventive recipes....NOW Combined with the knowledge that Fiber is wonderful....the more you can add the better, try to do low fat (watch the labels for hidden carbs with that low fat label!!) and that milk is ok (I sure missed milk on Atkins)....However, I've replaced most milk and definitely cream with Soymilk Unsweetened (couldn't do soymilk until much higher up the ladder on Atkins)....I can have whole grain cereal and oats for breakfast, I just have a little and pair it with added protein of eggs on the side....and I will never go back to juicing it...I always did prefer whole fruit anyway....I am free of the caffeine addiction....still do coffee (decaf)...but it's becuase I love the flavor of coffee and the way it smells. :D
I might also note, that I do take an Apple Cider Vinegar Tonic as well. Supposed to clean out the yeasties and is supposed to assist you with weight loss too, and cleans alot of toxins out of your system. Don't really know, but it does make me feel good. I will say though, that my sister started SB the same day I did...and I have lost a lot more than her...she won't touch the ACV Tonic. Although she IS closer to her goal weight, so that makes a difference too. |
