Bortass

Well I'm up another pound today. I'm still not concerned with it though. I'm attributting it to Monday being an artificialy low weight right now. Hopefully things stabilise soon.

Yesterday was:
B V8 and scrambled eggs
MS 16 oz skim milk
L romaine lettuce w/ salad dressing and 3 oz tuna and cheese stick
AS1 Gala apple
AS2 15 almonds
D 2 hamburgers(90/10) w/ cheese and greenbeans
NS Fudgecicles

Perhaps I'm eating too much ie 2 burgers. Kinda doubt it though, for reference I'm 6'2 - 6'3 male.

Wiley, you right with the apples. I did feel kinda munchy after eating it. I'll swap out to bannanas once I run out of apples unless the apples cause me problems.

Excercise was: 1 hour class and 2 hours volleyball

Today: 236/218.5/200

It's great when you begin to notice which foods trigger cravings. That's when you realize it is a personal lifestyle change-finding which foods work best with your chemistry and that you personally find satisfying. I love avocados and bananas and with my fair amount of activity the pottasium is great as well. Maybe find a snack thats a veggie or good fat where you can up the quantity or serving size.

Hey .. just found your journal .. and decided to pop in and say hello .. and congrats on your progress so far!

You are very much like me .. or better .. I'm very much like you (since you are older ..hehehe .. no pun intended, of course) .. with regards to the inconsistent pattern of weight loss. I tend to lose like 2 kilos overnight .. and then gain 1 kilo the next day .. and then stall for a few days ... and I do retain a lot of water. I started on Monday weighing 124 .. by Wed I was down to 119! That's 5kilos or 10lbs! in 2 days! I used to think something was wrong with me, I could never understand how one can lose 5kilos of waterweight in 2 days .. but reading other people's journals makes you feel "normal".

Also, the lack of male input on this board doesn't help much. Not that I don't enjoy the female participation .. but evidently our bodies work in a totally different way, therefore it's not always easy to relate!

Here's a male inspiring story regarding weightloss ...

The initial before and after pic is gone .. but if you go into like pages 2 or 3 there are images of his before and after.

Keep up the good work!

That was very impressive.

I don't dare post before/after pictures. Call me a hippocrite, but I have always been overweight with the fat ab, size just varies. That's my personal hangup. I'm also historically camera shy. I never used to like how I looked and that started at a young age. Sad now really since pictures are a memory of the past. Self concious(sp?)...

So here's my first weightloss story. I was a sophmore in HS so i was about 14 or so. I was 5'10 and weighed 213. That winter I joined the wrestling team, Greco-Roman. My weight class was 'unlimited' ie 187 - 275 lbs. I sucked but made it through the season.

Of course I was tired of wrestling guys that outweighed me by 30 - 60 lbs. So I joined weight watchers. I got down to about 185 in 7 weeks and wrestled the 185 class my junior year. I joined again and got down to 163 in 6 weeks by the time my senior year started.

I lost 40 lbs in 13 weeks over that two year span. One day that year I wore a dress shirt to school, it must have been cuz we had a wrestling meet that day. Anyway I stood up for some reason in history and a girl in my class looked at me and said "you've lost weight haven't you?". That was a good feeling. Too bad only 1 other classmate ever noticed ie mentioned it to me during those years.

I then crept up to around 185 by my early 20's and was about 210 when I got married back in 94. About 225 by '95, 245 around 2003, 265/70 by 2006.

Maybe I'll find a pair, if ya know what i mean, and post some pics some day....

Well some good news from the almighty scale, I stayed the same as yesterday. I'm pretty sure that means that my weight has stabilized after last weekend.

I decided to check out a BMI calculator the other day at WebMD. My goal is to reach 200, but that's still considered overweight. I need to get down into the 185 - 190 range to be in the high end of normal. I don't think I've been under 200 in 14 years...

It would be very sweet to get down into the 180s. Volleyball requires alot of jumping and how high you jump aka vert makes a big difference. Not having to lift an additional 50 lbs should add a few inches, I'd think.

First things first though. I need to get to 200. That was my goal when I first did this in '06. I made it to 213 and stopped. That seemed to be a platuea and I slowly strayed from plan. I'm about 5.5 lbs from that point now. If things progress normally, I should be there by mid June. Hitting 200 by sometime in August should be doable as well. I'm under no pressure to be at a certain weight for any event etc.

I figure slow weightloss is still good because then my body is able to slowly adjust to things and perhaps I have a better chance of ingraining these eating habits.

I have noticed 1 side effect of the weight loss. I was diagnosed with tendonitis in my right knee back in Febuary. So it hurt during/after playing volleyball and even my left one was sore. I never setup the PT appointments, yes I know I'm a bad boy( wanna spank me? ). Well I've played alot in the last week and my knees are feeling fine. No pain whatsoever.

Yesterdays food-
B- same as always V8 and scrambled eggs. I'm actually starting to like V8. I just gotta start liking the low sodium version. Also I like eggs so no boredome yet there.

MS - 16 oz skim milk

L - cheese stick and a lettuce and pepper salad <- not enough protein

AS1 - gala apple

AS2 - 15 almonds

D - grilled chicken breast with grilled peppers <- not enough veggies

NS - fudgecicles

excercise - walked 2 miles or so and mowed the lawn

Today: 236/218.5/200

It's funny you say that. I noticed some of the same things from reading some of your posts. We also both had a backslide and are just getting going again. That may be why I was riding ya a bit in your journal.

Just as long as no starts asking me about my laundry........ :P

LOL that laundy joke is old!! Like 2 years ... and it took me quite a while to figure it out lol .. call it a cultural difference.

Just one note regarding the BMI. It is a standardized test, so just use it as a guidelines. If, at 200lbs, you feel fit (depends on your muscle mass) .. then go for it ... I cannot set my ultimate goal as of yet ... I know I look pretty well at 97kilos (last summer), but there was still room for improvement. So i was thinking maybe 90 .. but then again, I haven't been to 90 for such a long time, i don't know what it's like.

Well I had a feeling you'd pickup on the laundry joke... As for it being a cultural difference, I dunno about that. I thought they were serious about you washing clothes until they started giggling about it etc. I have never heard that euphamism before.

How true on the BMI. It would be awesome to break 200 but I have other things I must do first. On that note I stayed the same again. Not real sure what's up with that unless I'm not eating enough or the apples caused a stall. Though I find it hard to believe that 4 apples over the course of 4 days would do anything.

Saturday will be a challenge. My niece is graduating suma cum laude(sp?) so there's a big party planned. I figure I can raid the veggie tray and salad( assuming they'll have those). I have a feeling I'll be straying a little though.

So yesterday was:
B- scrambled eggs V8
MS- 16 oz skim milk
L - green salad and cheese stick <- again not enough protien
AS1 - the last gala apple and a cheese stick
AS2 - 15 almonds
D - 2 small porkchops grilled and a can of green beans
NS - fudgcicles

excercise: 3 hours of volleyball. Goodnews here is still no knee pain. Maybe the stress of my fat @ss jumping was the cause afterall....

I have no advice to give you on your stall as I personally experience that quite often, and I know how frustrating it is. Sometimes I stall when I keep up with the plan to the t, and other times I lose weight if I eat 2 extra slices of brown bread ... I really haven't figured out a pattern yet.

However I have discovered certain things about myself. for instance, eating an apple would cause huge cravings for me (with or without a protein), so I just don't have it. Eating cereal in the morning is a big no no, cause I end up hungry as hell by 10am, therefore I would opt for a piece of brown toast with ricotta and some veggies on top (like mushrooms or tomatoes). Ricotta in Malta is made with part-skimmed milk, so I have no problems with that.

As far as the laundry joke goes .. yes it is a bit of a cultural difference. We don't refer to sex as laundry here lol. We have other ways to refer to that, I wouldn't even bother to translate, cause they wouldn't make any sense at all! So yeah .. it took me a while to figure out that they were actually referring to sex!

I'm currently weighing in at 119kilos. I need to lose 4 kilos by June 7th. I have given myself that time frame ... I'm done with playing games! As a reward for that mini goal, I chose to go out with some friends and party! It will be a combination of two things .. .reaching a mini goal, and "almost" an end of exams bash party ... cause I would still have my last exam on the 11th .. but I figured I can squeeze a night out with friends after surviving 6 exams!

Chiming in here to say hi and wish you good luck. Setting a final weight goal is a big problem. BMI is really just an estimator - optimal fat content might be a better goal. When you get to the top of the weight range for your height, get your body fat measured at a gym and go from there to find a final number.

Well the stall continues. I'm at 218.5. The only change was Sunday AM when I was up to 220(water weight) and that went away by Monday AM.

I'm still not sure what's going on. Maybe I'm eating too much? I dunno.

I added in some brown rice the last 2 days with dinner. No bad side effects. I replaced the apple with a banana as well. That has worked well so far.

I've had a harder time this weekend following the plan again. The issues have been around not eating snacks, and I didn't have my milk Sunday or Monday. I was too busy working on stuff around the house.

I survived the graduation and party no problem. I ate green salad and some cheese. I also ate 5 meatballs, probably a mistake but they were small.

Today is my birthday, so I may try to make the bean brownies. My wife's a little bummed since all I'm getting is a card ie no cake. Not real sure why, since I told her it was fine( the volleyball clinic last weekend was an early present). I'm not a big birthday person anyways /shrug.

Back to the stall. Perhaps I'm eating too much. I don't feel hungry at all and I've been pretty good about eating the veggies. I guess I'll start reducing the amount of protien I'm eating at night. For example last night I had 2 burgers with just cheese and mustard, grilled peppers and onion, and about a cup of brown rice. I'll start reducing that to 1 burger.

I can also cut back on the steak. We had a couple NY strip the other night. I think they were about 12 oz ea or so before being cooked.

The scale! It lies! It's plotting it's evil revenge for all those times my fat @ss stepped on it all those years ago....

Well not really. So I'm down 1 lbs. I'd say woohoo the stall is over but I'm dehydrated. Volleyball really took alot of H2O out of my system. I woke up with and still have a headache because of it. And yes I do drink water when I play. Let's see 32 oz during the 2 hours of play and then another 24 oz when I got home before going to bed.

So I figure I'll be back up to 218.5 tommorow after I drink alot of water today.

I did cut back a little bit on what I ate yesterday.
B- V8 scrambled eggs
MS- 16 oz skim milk
L - chili salad w/ cheese stick
AS- banana
D - can of green beans, 1cup or so brown rice, grilled sirloin. No idea how much steak since we split it three ways but it started over 16 oz before hitting the grill.
NS- I made myself bean brownies for my bday and put some ff coolwhip on top. I think I have the wrong kind of cool whip though. So i didn't use much though I did eat about 1/4 of the brownie. But hey it's my bday and the only 'crap' in it is the splenda.

Excercise 2 hours of fairly intense VB.

I hear you on the stall. Now with your eating plan, drinking so much water, and exercising for 2 hours, one would logically think you'd be dropping down those pounds. Because seriously ... this new way of eating and exercising should shed them pounds quickly, as opposed to your previous lifestyle! Here are 2 sample days when I'm on and off SB.

OFF

B - 4 large slices of italian bread, toasted, with loads of butter and jam
S - 2 Candy bars, packet of crisps
L - some junk
S - Biscuits (cookies for ya!), and stuff like that
D - Whatever mom cooks
Late night snack - 4 sandwitches (that's 8 slices of bread) grilled cheese or a meal from mcdonalds, or a pizza

ON

B - 2 slices ww bread, topped with 2 eggs and light cheese slice. Sometimes I throw in a few slices of tomatoe as well.
S - 1 oz of cheese
L - big salad filled with veggies and tuna/chicken
S - nuts
D - protein (fish/beef/pork/chicken), with 3 cups of veggies (boiled, grilled, raw .. whatever)

Now tell me if there isn't a difference there!!!!!

Wed May 28, 2008 1:01 pm

Bortass

Exactly!

I used to eat 2 multigrain bagels for breakfast. Lunch was usually a sandwhich except on weekends when it's be 2 peanut butter sandwhichs. Dinner is almost the same except there would be no veggie and rice/potato.

Snacks. At work I may have grabbed a couple bags of pretzals or candy bars. Right before I got back on, I was on a poptart fix and would eat 8 of the things... While cooking dinner snack would be a couple rum and dt cokes and snack mix.

All I can think of, is that our bodies are still adjusting. I mean I lost 17 lbs in about 16 days and have been holding steady since. That's alot of weight to lose quickly. I'm just hoping my system finds equilibrium and starts to lose again.

Some people stall for extended periods. I'm hoping not to but I'm eating alot better and I've stopped gaining weight. That's two important things in and of themselves. I'm not having any willpower issues either which helps alot, as well.

Wed May 28, 2008 1:43 pm

maltaguy

But I am having will power issues! I need to shrink down to last summer's weight, otherwise I would have to buy new clothes, and right now I'm broke!!! I can't afford to change my wardrobe again, so I have to lose it to fit in last summer's clothes!
