I was eating 1200 caloires and excercising for 6 weeeeks!! and the weight (even if just water) has come off quicker on this than ever before
I am scared to move to phase 2..in 10 days lol
if i add in half cup of oatmeal in the morning...will i still lose weight...ive read obviously u do.. but im not convinced!!
i have 30 days until an important event...
can i just stay on phase 1 until then? or will this really ruin my metabolism
I figured out im eating 1200 calories on phase 1 anyways...so im def not starving myself

you need to move to phase 2 in ten days.

this is not a plan you will go off in 30 days when your event happens. this is a lifetime plan that you incorporate into your daily living.

Actually chances are you will either gain weight initially in P2 or plateau for a few weeks before you start losing again. But P1 is just not a healthy way of eating for more than 2 weeks. And as Dr. A has said, "If I had wanted to design a single phase program, I would have!". This is a lifetime eating program. P2 is where you learn how to eat well and healthily for the rest of your life. It is not a phase that should be skipped or avoided or even feared. Although many are apprehensive so I understand the fear although I think it is a bit irrational to be afraid of foods that have such good health benefits. Pls read the advice on transitioning to P2 sticky thread at the top of the P2 forum as it covers a lot of what to expect and why you need to move to P2 regardless of what the scale says initially. There's even a link to a long thread at the bottom of the first post with lots of responses to a previous question about this. It's a pretty common fear. Good luck and enjoy your event.

FWIW for me:
Weight lost in P1: 9-10 lbs.
Weight lost in P2: 30-35 lbs (it just took months not weeks)

I thought I had read in the book that it was okay to stay on P1 for a week or two longer, but certainly not forever. I'm planning on trying for three weeks because I have so much to lose (45 lbs just to get to the top of my goal weight range), though I will give it up before then if I feel like I need to.

Did I misread something in the book?

What would be the reasons for feeling like you "would need to" switch? Many seem to get so comfortable in P1 that they never want to leave and avoid the heart of the program which is P2 and ultimately damage their metabolism further or just continue to reinforce a "diet" mentality instead of embracing a lifetime change mentality. And 45 lbs to lose probably doesn't seem like that much to those with 80 or 100 or more lbs to lose! ;) It's probably going to take the better part of a year anyway. Might as well enjoy the ride! :)

Quote: Q: This lifestyle is wonderful. I lost 8 pounds the first week and have no more cravings. My question is: Is it ok to do Phase 1 for more than 2 weeks?

Dr. Agatson: If you have a great deal of weight to lose it is okay to extend Phase 1 to three weeks or longer. The problem is that continued rapid weight loss can make it more difficult to maintain. In general, pounds that are lost more slowly are more easily kept off. If one is losing weight rapidly, it is particularly important to exercise because this helps maintain lean body mass and thereby helps keep our metabolism at a high level.

although you can also find Q&As within that thread that suggest it is OK to extend it as well, so the good doc waffles quite a bit on this issue it seems.

I think my main reasons for "needing to switch" would include not feeling well, not feeling like I was doing the right thing for my body, or the fear that I might take a life if I don't get a piece of bread or other carb.

I think you're right, though - it's going to take awhile no matter what Phase I'm in.

Also, on a sidenote, does anyone else ever complain of severe heartburn? I've had the worst heartburn over the past several days, so much so that it makes me not want to eat anything. Is that a common symptom of P1?

actually more typically it is the reverse, at least in P2. ;) maybe you aren't eating enough? do you notice it after any particular meals or snacks or foods?

that happens to me when I eat too many raw veggies. I have to make sure I incorporate adequate dairy and protein and more cooked veggies than just salad. It seems to level out but if it's really troubling me, I'll use my RX or OTC medications. Make sure you're eating small amounts often, and see if any one thing bothers you.

ETA - I just opened an email with this information - following foods can cause heartburn - personally, unless I'm overindulging, most of these things don't bother me:

Coffee and other products with caffeine, carbonated drinks and alcohol.
Citrus fruits, onions and chocolate.
Tomato-based foods.
Peppermints and other mint-flavored products.
Fattening or spicy foods.
