Well, I'm back to SBD. Not that I spent a lot of time on this board in the first place (perhaps that was the problem).

I first started SBD about 4 years ago. Lost a total of about 40 pounds and looked great. Stayed on some combination of phase 2/3 for a few years.

The past year or so, I began to creep up in weight. Started eating more crap and put back everything I lost....and more!

On February 18th I quit smoking after about 22 years of daily smoking. I have been nicotine free for two and a half months now. I am sure quitting smoking didn't help my weight -- but I am really glad I did it.

Interestingly, I also managed to stop biting my nails in the past couple of months (a life long habit!)

I feel really in control of my life except for one thing...my weight.

Having been so successful with SBD in the past, it was a natural choice for me to try it again. So, I started Phase 1 this past Sunday and I have been reading these boards getting more tips and hints. Thanks to everyone who posts here since, even as a veteran, I've learned a lot of new stuff.

Have a great day!

Welcome, Griffin! Congrats on quitting smoking, that's a HUGE accomplishment! If you can do that, I'm sure you can lose the weight!

I highly recommend posting compulsively. Helps me, anyway. ;)

Thanks, Walrus. I actually used some message boards for support while quitting smoking and it was super helpful. So, hopefully it will work for weight loss as well.

Posting, not snacking :)

So far so good. My weight is down again this morning. Phase 1 usually works pretty quickly for me which is a nice motivator. I'm not going to list every food and meal since I think that's boring and part of the fun of South Beach is, once you know what you can and can't have, it becomes pretty automatic.

I do have to remember to pick up some of the staples at the grocery - deli meat, cucumbers (great for spreads, cheese, etc.), pickles.

Have a great day!

Last night was tough in a way. I had poker night with a group of friends - we do it once a month - but this time was at a club with a buffet first. I did pretty well with the food. The buffet had a great salad bar with lots of fresh veggies and egg salad - no problem there.

I did, however, have to have a couple of drinks -- it was poker night with the guys after all! So I had 2 scotches. I know that there are no carbs in scotch but technically they are not phase 1 friendly. I forget why.

So, my weight popped back up a few pounds this morning. Probably temporary from the alcohol and the fact that I ate like a million pickles yesterday which has a ton of sodium and will make you retain fluid.

Today will be a more straight forward day.

you HAD to have a couple of drinks? NO you CHOSE to have a couple of drinks. YOUR choice.

we don't count carbs. YOU can't drink in phase 1 because of what it does to your blood sugar....

Of course, you're right. It was a choice. I am not a big drinker and can go an entire month without drinking any alcohol -- until poker night. Then, it's not quite the same.

I think I minimized any damage by having scotch, not beer. Limiting it to two drinks and having them with (and immediately following a meal.

I am not noticing any spike in carb cravings today and I was able to avoid the yummy looking desserts at the game last night (huge homemade cookies that they brought to our table and set right in the center!

I also didn't smoke which makes me really happy since playing poker in a club that allows smoking could be a big trigger for that. Sometimes, there needs to be a balance.

I am now back to being more strict. thanks for the reality check Ladybugnessa :)

I never mind someone calling me on my BS

Such a busy day, I haven't even looked at a computer until bedtime. My wife was making belgin waffles for the kids this morning so I quickly printed off the SB recipie which I had not yet tasted. Man, that was really good and a nice alternative to eggs for breakfast. Wonder if they freeze well and how they are without the splenda since I don't want to use much of it.

I'm doing okay. I am noticing a big reduction in carb cravings. I went out to lunch with some friends today and had a salad while they got sandwiches. The waitress brought bread over to the table to go with my salad -- they ate it, not me.

Had a fancy dinner out tonight and managed to avoid the gourmet bread basket. Found an entree that was served with white beans instead of potatoes. Everyone else at the table shared some desserts but I wasn't tempted. Had a decaf coffee with a little splenda as a sweet treat (I never usually sweeten my coffee).

I'm hanging in there....enjoying the lack of cravings for carbs and seeing my clothes fit a little better.

I might need to stay off the scale for the rest of Phase 1 though since if the scale doesn't move, it is somewhat unmotivating. I don't remember how often I am supposed to hit the scale. I've been too busy to re-read the book again but it would be a smart thing to do.

Another challange today. Busy all day and had to be at a child's birthday party for most of the afternoon and evening. Menu: pizza, ice cream, cake and cookies. Total garbage food. Didn't prepare to bring something else. Damn.

Before the party, there was a tray of carrots and snowpeas out so I went to town on those. Ate the cheese off some pizza and tossed the bread. No cake, no cookies. Triumph! Not ideal to suck up that full-fat mozzerella but it's better than eating the whole pizza slices or the sugary stuff.

I really need to be back on a regular schedule, cooking my own stuff, without all these social obligations.

Arrrgggghhh --- I just remembered mother's day brunch tomorrow! Hopefully there will be eggs and meat and veggies. If there's only bagels, I'm going to be awfully hungry.

Thank goodness for my wife who made the SB waffles for the brunch. Between that and the quiche which I cut the crust off of, I safely made it through brunch.

Still here and doing okay. I forgot how much I like SB compared to other diets especially when I have to eat out at a restaurant. Had to go out to lunch yesterday and the restaurant had a salad bar -- score! Lunch on SB was a piece of cake that day. Well, not really cake, but you know what I mean.

I've only got 4 days or so left on Phase 1 and I am starting to have that anxiety that other people have when moving to P2. On the other hand, I'd like a freaking apple or some whole grain bread or some popcorn. I really miss popcorn. Maybe I should wait a loooooong time before trying that because I have a problem limiting the quantity. I've never put away a whole bowl of apples in one sitting!

Have a great day!

Still holding. Not up, not down, but holding. I think that is a good thing.

Got some great northern beans in preparation for trying those muffins that everyone raves about. Tonight, had a walnut crusted chicken breast which was pretty good. Lots of string beans on the side. The kids keep swiping my sugar-free Jell-o though. I'll have to hide it in a box in the fridge that says "Liver" or something they won't touch.

I'm happy to be wearing a shirt today that just a couple of weeks ago I had to change because it was really uncomfortable. Felt great today.

A well-fitting shirt! What a great reward for your efforts.

It sounds like you're well-skilled at the SBD, restaurant style. I've eaten out a few times and even though I order what sounds like good SBD food, I often taste sugar where I wouldn't expect it. Like in the pecan crusted chicken. I am better off avoiding restaurants, I think.

Keep up the good work. And enjoy your loose shirt.
