I didn't send you a PM because I don't know if that would be ok, and I thought this might help some others, also. (And that others might want to chime in with answers!)
I am having trouble getting my veggies in at breakfast. If I eat an egg-based meal I'm good, because I throw some in there. But when I have oatmeal, I don't know how to get them in. I HATE V8 (and any type of tomato juice product) so I can't do that.
I seem to recall you saying that you eat cereal (I remember you mentioning Good Sam) for breakfast. I also remember you saying you don't like tomato juice products. So, how do you get in the morning veggies? Or do you just try to work them in later in the day?
Thanks for any advice you (or anyone else) can offer! |

i think once you are well into phase 2 (and clearly you are cause you are eating oatmeal for breakfast) that if you manage to get veggies at snacks and 2 cups at lunch and dinner then it would be ok
are you having fruit with your cereal ? |

Nessa, after we start adding fruit, we can substitute it for some of our vegetables - is that right? |

not substitute but rather, have in addition to.... so you still need 4.5 cups minimum of veggies per day, spread out is better.... |

At breakfast, though, I'm thinking if you had fruit you wouldn't necessarily also have to have vegetables - we could have them later as a snack, maybe. Does that sound right to you?
A bigger question is, once we are up to 3 servings of fruit and 3 servings of starchy foods daily, we might (for example) be eating 6 full servings of fruit and starchy vegetables. I'm thinking the minimum of 4.5 cups of other vegetables in addition to that would be more food than most people would want to eat in a day. |

yes if you are getting enough veggies during the rest of the day and having fruit at breakfast then IMO (and that of many others) you could put off your morning veggies till your AM snack
as for 3 fruits and 3 starch/grain servings... veggies come first
I eat 1-2 fruit per day and 1-2 starch/grain most days... but i never ever skimp on my veggies. |

I'm only 2 weeks into P2. I added oatmeal the first week (had it along with milk and a hardboiled egg.) I added berries this week, but have had them in the evenings the last 2 days. I know many people suggest adding fruit first, but I was so sick of eggs... So I asked if adding oatmeal would be ok, and people said as long as it didn't cause cravings to go for it. It didn't seem to trigger anything. I still only ate small amounts of it, because by the end of the week I was sick of that, too. (I'll be glad when I'm in full P2 and can vary my meals every day!)
On all days that I've eaten oatmeal, I have made sure that my first snack (if I had one - if lunch is only 2 hours away I save snacks for later) included veggies. |

Glad the other vets stepped up while I was away at yoga! ;)
Well I still have a 1 egg (egg beaters) omelette with some pepper and lately some black beans along with the morning oatmeal/cold cereals, so I get a small amount in that way. But mostly I just make up for it later in the day, usually at lunch where my salad is probably in the 6-7 cup range all by itself. And yes M-F that is what I have had for lunch just about every day and sometimes on the weekends too depending on schedules and location. Lunch is something I just eat while I'm working mostly. I enjoy breakfast and dinners as "dining" more. It's not the meal template, but it's worked for me. |

Well how DARE you try and live your life and not sit on the board waiting to answer questions!?
Thanks for the advice. I'm trying to make sure I get all the veggies in, I was just worried I was screwing up when I didn't.
Also I like the idea of adding some beans to my eggs - that sounds great, and I never thought of it! |
