I thought it would be a great idea to start a new thread for all the smokers who follow SB, we can share our stories here, and maybe try to quit together!
Do you find yourself smoking more when on SB? I tend to smoke a little bit more, probably to compensate for not eating all the time like I used to do before.
Would like to quit, but I tried once, and I ended up literally going out at 1 in the morning to buy chocolate and candy!
My plan is to reach my target weight, stabilize that for a few months .. and then attempt to quit smoking.
What are you views regarding this topic? |

Or you could quit smoking, then continue on P2 as before.
I quit smoking after 10years -cold turkey is the only way to go and I used to smoke almost 2 packs a day-I did gain around 20lbs from eating more junk.
Whatever you decide, good luck with it - and for the record I find harder to resist food than smoking!!! |

| But I'm not sure that I have enough will power to do both. I mean, I'm here posting messages of encouragement and advice to people, probably sometimes sounding like i'm invincible .. but that is so not the case. I struggle big time with keeping up with my healthy eating plan as well ... so I'm not sure I'm able to do both at the same time. |

Well, for one,I find resisting food harder b/c we are always surrounded by food - fast food places, commercials on TV, meeting your friends to go out to a restaurant. Once I decided to quit smoking it was easy (in US you can not smoke in public places, offices, pubs, restaurants, etc.) - so it's easier to avoid . The problem is nicotine was a huge appetite suppresant for me,I could have a beer and few smokes and that was my supper.
Seeing your determination on your weight loss journey,I believe you can do it! Are you surrounded by smokers daily? Is it possible to "wean" yourself from your smoking buddies for a while? Yes, I used to miss the "smoking circle" at work, but now I just shudder thinking of all the "soot" in my lungs.
For the record, I'm a little over 30 - smoked for over 10 years starting at 13! |

Well even in Europe it's like that .. smoking is banned from public places (offices, restaurants, bars, discos ecc ecc) ... and actually I don't have any smoking buddies .. all of my friends are non smokers.
I guess I'll just wait until I reach my target weight .. stabilize it and then quit .. it's too hard to do both things at once .. plus I have my final exams for my degree in communication studies (major) and psychology (minor) .... so now is definitely not a good time!!!!! [ I know .. I'm rationalizing and coming up with all sorts of excuses lol] |

communication and psychology - now that explains a lot!
Good luck with the tests, tests were a source of major stress for me. |

I actually smoke less now. I really would like to quit, but I see it the same way you do-- one thing at a time.
When you quit smoking, you crave food...that would just be setting yourself up for failure. Cigarettes are actually proven to be an appetite supressant (not that that should be used as a dieting method, lol, im not at all encouraging that for anyone!)
My grandmother smoked for years. She quit when she was in her fifties, yet died recently, of lung cancer (5 years after she quit) I gained a lot of weight when she was sick, and even more so after she passed in March, which is why I came to SBD. lol, when I weighed myself at her house in Feb and told her I gained 15 lbs, she told me her scale was broken, which it clearly wasn't. God rest her soul.
I think that once I get to my goal weight, or somewhere close to it, I'll work on quitting smoking.
Best of luck to you! |

I've heard Chantix works pretty well. My roomate quit for about 6 months. She had a really stressful week and grabbed one of my cigarettes and is now smoking again. But I belive she is going back on it soon, for a second try. But I know a couple people who have used it, said it was great.
Unfortunately, it is very expnsive without insurance, and my health insurance just ran out. So until I get insurance back, I'll have to go about it the old fashion way.
Good luck to your husband tho! :D |

| I quit about a month ago. I use the patch and wellbutrin b/c I have a Anxiety Disorder. I am now on step 3 seeing how I had weened myself self down to 7 or less smokes before stopping. I did seem to want to eat more. In the pass when I quit I gained alot of weight but this time I kept carrot sticks handy and that helped me not eat the bad stuff cause I couldn't afford to gain any more weight. Now I am on 7mg patch .. welbutrin and SB. My craving haven't been bad so hoping doing the SB will help with the weight. Hubby quit 2 yrs ago cold turkey. He was a 2 pk aday smoker. he is doing SB with me b/c he has gained alot of weight. Its a hard thing to quit and I wish you much luck with it. Nice to see this thread cause it will come in handy when having a bad day. :) |

I quit for 3 years and then started back after spousal issues. I did it cold turkey. I tried Wellbutrin but had the side effect of panic attacks.
I just quit again this morning. Hoping no problems. I just keep telling myself I don't need that crutch and how much $$$ I will save. Last time I put the money I would be spending on cigs in a jar and then at the end of each week spent it on something for ME only.
My worst times are when I have coffee in the morning, right after I eat, or if something goes crazy during the day.

| Yep. I started when I was in 7th grade. My husband and I have a neighbor couple that also smoke. We all decided for new years that we would quit. Turns out I am the only one that did. I started to put on some weight, okay, a lot of weight. 10lbs in one month. Our neighbor (the female one) however switched to cigs and coffee as a diet and started to loose. In 14 1/2 years and 4 additional years of living together...not to mention we had been friends since 6th grade... my husband has never, ever, ever, said anything about me looking good. He did however find it ok to let her know he thought on this particular night that she was boasting on the weight she was loosing to let her know he thought "she was looking really good!" My biggest motivation is to make this work, so I might someday get the same response. I know I never will though. |

| twtrooper ... do it for yourself, not for others! Don't lose weight to get a compliment from your husband, lose weight to feel healthier and sexy! You have to list down (not necessarily here on the board) your own private reasons for wanting to lose weight, reasons that will please you, not others! |
