| Wow, huge difference from a day 2 months ago and your typical day now. I was looking at the 2 months ago part first and thought, how did she lose weight, eating tater tots for breakfast and pie and gravy at lunch? :D |

Heh - yeah, I didn't lose weight. And over the last year I just constantly gained.
My problem was I ate whatever I wanted - I didn't pay any attention at all to what was healthy, just ate whatever looked good. And I bought my breakfast and lunch at work, just whatever was in the cafeteria for the day. And most often it was potatoes at every meal.
Not only was I eating crap, I was spending WAY too much money. We have an option of charging our meals to our paycheck, so I never actually had to hand over cash for the food I ate - just scanned my ID badge. Sometimes I would spend $100 per paycheck on food. :!:
Now, all I have coming out of my check is the cost of an occasional can of Coke Zero or a cup of coffee. It's a nice side benefit! |

hey Ditdah,
I didn't see a couple things mentioned in your journal, so I'll ask.
How are your clothes fitting? Sometime we don't lose weight but do lose fat.
What kind of excercise are you doing? |

Your menu changes are amazing!!! Isn't it scary where mindless eating can take us?
Thanks for the link to the muffin recipe! I will have to try that out :) |

| Just dropping in to say hi. I'm new to SB and the boards and reading people's journals for inspiration. What amazes me is what we now count as a slip or a binge, compared to how we would have indelged in the past. I had been wondering about my consumption of an extra half cottage cheese that I hadn't planned for when I realised that pre SB I would have eaten 1 large candy bar and 4 donuts in the same time frame. Perspective is everything. I have also decided not to feel guilty about there being some shredded carrot in the bagged salad I have been buying for P1. A little shredded carrot is hardly a disaster relative to the massive quantities of bread and baked goods I was shovelling away lately. |

Hiya Bortass - and the sad answer is I'm not really doing any exercise. Yes, I know I need to. I'm walking more, but no real workout routine yet. And I hate that I have to admit that.
So, my goal for today is to get my butt on my elliptical for as long as I can stand it. (I'd like to say 30 minutes, but I haven't been on it in a year. I don't know if I can handle that much today.) But I WILL do it!
Welcome, Muffin! Isn't it amazing how our perceptions change? I was beating myself up last night for having too many inside-out brussel sprouts, which was too much protein. The roomie said "It was a pound of meat, and you ate less than half. What was that - 6 ounces? Yeah, it was more than your plan suggests, but a few months ago you would have made a casserole with 2 pounds of meat and easily eaten half of it. So calm down." I just need to make sure I find that fine line between obsessing too much and allowing myself to many "cheats." If I start saying 'a little of this and a little of that is ok...' I could fall down that slippery slope fast!
Good news on the scale today, I've lost 1.5 pounds in the last week. Woo-hoo!
Aaaaaand I've changed my ticker yet again. I have really found that tickerfactory is the easiest to update for me. I swear one of these days I'll pick one and stick with it. |

So did you get on the elliptical?
You don't need a workout per se. Just some sort of activity. Go for a walk, work in the garden, anything that gets ya moving and burning calories.
Also, try to find something you like doing. If the elliptical is no fun and feels like 'work' you won't do it. But if you find something that's fun and you enjoy it's so much easier.
Keep up the good work! |

Yes, I got on it, but I didn't make it as long as I like. And I haven't been on it since.
I don't know why getting moving is so hard for me. I love to walk the neighborhood, and I actually enjoy being on the eliptical. (Or however you spell it.) It's just getting my butt in gear to do it. I guess it's the whole process - it's not just 30 minutes on the thing, it's chaning clothes, doing the workout, taking a shower, drying the hair (which I have to do even if I'm not going anywhere, since I have long thick hair or it ends up a rat's nest.) It's like an hour-and-a-half process for a 30 minute workout. I have no idea how people with kids and families do it.
I know these aren't good excuses, since it's my HEALTH we're talking about. I just need to figure out how to motivate myself.
Today's going to be a weird food day. I just threw a bunch of stuff in the lunchbox, so I'll figure it out as I go:
B - celery, hummus (TJ's horseradish hummus - YUM!,) hb egg, coke zero
Still in box: pickles, string cheese, cottage cheese, yogurt/jello treat, mixed steamed veggies, leftover thai crockpot chicken. I also have some mixed nuts and some popcorn at work if I need more snacks today, but I don't plan on hitting them up. And I'll probably have a few dark chocolate covered edamame at some point - I love those things! |

Well, I'll toss something out there. We all have different sensibilities so maybe this sounds gross to you...
You don't have to take a shower after. I know I don't after every workout. The ones I will are when I play volleyball for 2 - 3 hours at night because all my clothes are soaked.
Most other workouts, even the times I've gone for a run, I find that I cool down enough within 10 - 15 minutes that I'm fine. So all I do is change my clothes. I don't smell funny after nor feel all sweaty. But everyone is different and have various tolerance levels...
I picture your walks as being less intense then the elliptical. Maybe make the walks your primary form of excercise and only do the elliptical a couple times a week. That way you don't lose as much time to the process.
I do know what you mean about motivation. I got past that because we have a gym at work. So I take 2 classes a week there and lift 2 days a week with a partner. I'm already here and have something that makes me feel like I gotta go.
Oh, just thought of something. Did you ever read the older thread here on weightlifting? I don't know if it got stickied or not. You can make some nice improvements w/o sweating yer butt off. Also lean muscle burns calories 24/7 even when you are sleeping.
You also don't need alot of equipment nor a gym. A simple thing would be to do body weight squats. Stand near a wall if you have balance trouble but all you do is squat down as far as you can manage but don't go beyond a 90 degree bend in your legs, then straighten up. That's it, no equipment required. See how many you can do and slowly increase the number. That excercise works all the larger muscles in your legs and i find they tend to respond quickly. You'll be sore afterwards at first but it'll go away. You could probably do the squats in 5 minutes or so.
The disclaimer is I'm not a doctor, trainer, expert, nor do I know much about your health. So you may want to ask your Dr. about if what i suggested is approriate for you or not.
You don't need to lift heavy weights and turn yourself into a musclebound freak to gain the benefits ;) |

Bortass, you have some GREAT advice there! Thanks... I think I will start smaller, with the walks and some stretches, squats, etc... I guess I keep thinking I need to jump head-on into a full workout. That's overwhelming - starting off slowly is safer, and will get me motivated.
tilde1d, you'll see those show up a lot when people post meal plans. It's just abbreviations for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snack. (All the S's are snacks, and you'll usually see them in between my meals.)
Also when I post my meals like that it doesn't always include every bite I put into my mouth. For instance, I have a 72 ounce water bottle that I fill up each morning and finish every day. Sometimes I'll grab a few nuts or an extra string cheese in the afternoon if dinner is going to be late. Most days I have a glass of wine or a cocktail with dinner. Those are just my plans, both to be accountable and to keep track. If you ever want to know details of what anything is, just ask - I'll post full recipes (or links to them if they're not mine.)
Since I'm here...
Yesterday was NOT beachy. Ugh.
B - 2 scrambled eggs, 2 lean sausage patties
L - Taco bell. (No point in even listing it. Too much fat and too many grains.)
S - turkey pepperoni
D - cheesy broccoli and a hamburger patty
At least I worked my tail off around the house and in the yard. Broke a sweat more than once over the 3 hours I was cleaning. That had to count for a little bit of calorie-burning.
I have no idea what today's plan is. I've really been wanting popcorn, and haven't had it yet, so I may make some today and see how I do with it. |

Well, didn't do the popcorn. Roomie went to Wendy's, so I did the best I could.
B - coffee, cottage cheese
L - Wendy's: chili, ceaser (sp?) side sald, mandarin oranges
D - tuna salad, wheat bread (one slice), potato salad
I know the potato salad isn't SB, but it was homemade dill and red potatoes. I only had a few bites of the potatoes, but ate lots of the other stuff in it - celery, hb eggs, onions, mushrooms... YUMMY!
I made a slew of jello salads for this week. YUM. |

You should start off kinda slow anyways. The worse thing people that don't excercise much do is jump in full bore right away. Their body isn't ready for it and they feel it the next few days and it makes 'em quit.
I know when I starting lifting again a few years ago, we started real slow. Used low weights just to ease into it and within 3 - 4 weeks, we ramped it up.
Cleaning does count too BTW. So does gardening. Pretty much anything that makes you move is good. Clicking a remote and lifting food, doesn't count though :D |
