New to South Beach...are these foods allowed??

Hi everyone!! New to South Beach, and to the Forum!
I've only been on the diet for 4 days, and I've already lost 9 pounds:) I really like this diet, I think it will will work for me.

The only problem I'm having, as I'm sure the rest of you had, is that I really miss eating what I used to eat.

I really love pancakes, waffles, and cereal for breakfast. But, I found wholegrain cheerios & wholegrain pancakes made by Kellogg's.
Are these allowed in Phase 1? If not, how about in Phase 2?

Thanks! And if anyone has any other food that's allowed, I'd love to know. I just can't eat salad EVERYDAY. I love it, but veggies just don't fill me up...I end up craving high-fat foods. I need a solution.

No neither would be allowed on phase 1 and most likely neither on phase 2. You have to be checking ingredients, they most likely are a whole grain blend which is not what we are supposed to be eating on south beach.

read the stickies/faq at the top of this thread, there are exhaustive links to tell you what you can and can not have on each phase. Do no use the links to the right of this page, as it is outdated.

Trust me, if there was a legal way to have them, there would be a whole thread devoted to it!!!

Cereals, pancakes and waffels are OK in P2 provided they have enough fiber.

For cold cereal, the guideline is at least 5 g of fiber and less than 8 g of sugar. They are a lot of cereals that meet this guideline.

For Waffles and pancakes, you would have to male them from scratch, using whole-wheat, and use sugar-free syrup. They are a lot of recipes in the recipe section of this forum, or you can use an old recipe and adapted to this way of eating.

You can't have any grains on p1. Have you read the book?

As for p2, if you're asking about the Nutrigrain pancakes, they are only "made with whole wheat," when we need only whole wheat or only whole grain. Aside from water, the two main ingredients in those are white flour and high fructose corn syrup. Bad stuff! Don't fall for marketing.

The Multigrain Cheerios (multigrain isn't the same thing as being whole grain) aren't a good choice either. While they do contain some good whole grains, they are predominately corn and rice (not good cereal choices) with added starches, as well as being puffy.

There are some choices for cereals etc., but they need to be eaten in the right proportions with other foods. Grains should not be the meal but a side dish.

Yes, we need fat in the form of added good fats, such as olive or canola oil (or dressing or mayo made from either), olives, avocado, etc. Those help turn off that "I'm hungry" signal. Plus some nuts/seeds daily, too. See the meal templates in my FAQ for help with meal design.

well according to her other post, she craves "high fat" foods like pasta and bread, so not sure she isn't confusing carbs and fats. Regardless, SBD is a balanced healthy eating program and while fats and proteins do contribute to satiety, high volumes of veggies also help and are less calorie dense than virtually every other food group. Doesn't have to be salads, but lots of veggies are a key part of the program.

Please do check out the links in Kim's FAQ pages for food lists, meal templates and lots of other good links to common questions to help you get a better picture of what this program is all about.

I'm also new to SBD - just started two days ago. I have a question about yogurt - after supper I like to have a 1/2 cup of yogurt. I got the plain, fat free kind and it tastes nasty, so I've been adding a packet of Sweet n Low to it to sweeten it up which makes it more palateable. Is this okay?

yes. or you can try things like flavored extracts, SF jello powder, SF drink powders, SF syrups, etc. and count the calories in those against your sweet treat limit.

I really like the plain yogurt with a sprinkle of nuts (not too many - I just lightly sprinkle on some slivered almonds, and count towards your nut allowance) and stir in some sf caramel syrup - the kind you buy for coffee. YUM!

And good question about the yogurt....

I was thinking...I love vanilla yogurt, but that has added sweeteners. What if I bought plain yogurt, and added a little vanilla extract? Has anyone tried this? I can't imagine it would taste bad, but I don't know.

Yes, I have read the book. It's a pretty interesting book. I just have a hard time going to the grocery store and remembering what to buy & what not to buy, without having the book in-hand. :( I've started making a shopping list for next time I'm at the store, how's this sound:

Not too much variety, so if anyone has anything to add, I'd love to know :D

OOh, and in my grocery store, they sell gluten-free products, for people who are allergic to gluten. I learned a few recipies for this when I was in Culinary School also. I know these products arn't ok for P1, but what about P2?...things like gluten-free bagels, gluten-free deserts, etc...what are your thoughts? The bagels have potato startch & corn starch in them. So I'm guessing that when I can eat this stuff in the later stages, it would have to be eaten sparingly, as a treat.

Sorry guys. I've read the book twice, but I've never been good with memorizing stuff about nutrition :oops:

Easy way to have "pancakes"

1/4 c. lf or ff ricotta cheese
2 eggs
1 tsp. splenda
dash of nutmeg or cinnamon
Mix all together

spray hot skillet with olive oil, pour in batter and let cook/fry on both sides.

Top with some sugar free syrup (I found some that only has 5 calories per serving) and butter spray or heart healthy butter, yummmmm.

they kinda taste like a pancake combined with french toast.

megnliz unless you LIKE ff cheeses, I'd look for the reduced fat and/or cheese that has less than 6oz fat per 1 oz serving. and check the balsamic spray to make sure it meets the sugar requirement [which I can not remember off the top of my head, so go back to the stickie and check!!!]

When I started, I printed off a lot pages of the stickies, and/or cut and pasted the important information - like the cheese and dressing info - into a shopping guide. It makes much more sense than going to the store and 'thinking' you have it right - for example....I had tossed back and forth between WW core and SBD - decided on sbd but when I got to the store - I blanked and bought 2 tubes of polenta [okay on core] so now I have to find someone to take that off my hands...or end up tossing it.
