Just wondering, as someone who only has around 20lb to lose, and wants to do so quickly but safely, how much exercise is recommended to make a difference during P1 weight loss?

I realise I won't lose a lot in the first phase, but if exercise can maximise any possibly loss, tips are greatly welcomed :D

Sorry if this has been asked a million times before. x

The amount of exercise to "make a difference" is different for everyone. A lot of factors play a role, including age, metabolism, types of exercises, etc. For weight loss, weight training and running/biking seem to be the best types of exercises (for me).

But keep in mind - any regular exercise routine is good and will contribute to your overall health, even if it doesn't make much of a difference with your weight. Just walking an hour a day is beneficial. The important part is to have some type of activity every day.

Find an exercise program you like and try to do it at least three times a week, 4-5 times is better. Personally I like to vary my exercise, every week I do a spin (bike) class at least once, racquetball at least one day and some other good cardio workout at least one day. On the same days as those exercises, I'll add 30 minutes or more of weights - usually light weight lot of reps. I lost about 13 pounds in P1, have gained a couple back, but my waist size is continuing to decrease despite the weight gain.

On a side note, you say you realize you won't lose a lot in the first phase - Actually, the first phase is where you lose weight the quickest. 8-13 pounds is typical according to the SBD book.

Many people don't have that much water to lose.

*typical for obese, sedentary, cardiac patients with horrible dietary patterns before starting to eat even moderately healthily.

hi,
i also am wondering about exercise in P1. i only have 5 pounds to lose and l aready exercise 5x a week, doing pretty hard cardio most of those times. i have found that when i cut back on my carbs as in P1 i struggle through my workouts. on the other hand, my current eating habits have me 5 pounds over where i want to be, even with all the exercise. should i cut back on the intensity of the workouts? i know 5 pounds isn't much but it's all fat. i'm 5'2" and weigh 115...would like to be 110. 42 years old.thanks!

I wouldn't cut back on the exercise. Since you already seem to have a good exercise routine, you'd probably be best served asking your question on one of the diet forums. Some of the veterans on this board are good at analyzing what you are eating and making some suggestions.
