Chemical sugar subs ??

Am I the only person that has a problem with the use of these sugar substitutes? It doesn't really make the diet seem all that healthy if you're pouring some pretty intense chemicals into your diet? Is it just me, or does this bother some of you on some level? I'm trying to come to peace with it. I've been using Stevia and Xylitol, but it's hard not having a diet soda sometimes. And when I'm really craving a dessert, the recipes for them look so good. Help?

IMO, unless one has an allergy or other reaction to them, in moderation or small amounts they probably are not going to hurt. If you were using cupfuls a day - maybe. If you read the labels on almost anything you eat that is processed, the chemicals in artificial sweeteners can look benign in comparison.... there is just so much hype about them, and little about the others [Its a government ploy to keep us fat!!! jk]

There are people on this board who use the natural sweeteners and I suspect if you use the search function or ctrl f in the recipe thread, you would find recipes utiilizing the more natural ones.

It bothers me because some of the artificial sweetners tend to give me migraines. Plus I find the taste of every artificial sweetner off-putting; they all taste very chemical-y to me -- even stevia. The only ones that I can stand are some of the sugar alcohols, when they're in something that has a stronger flavor. Plus, all in all, I'd rather not ingest chemicals when I can avoid it. I figure I'm going to use agave some.

I'm struggling right now with how to appease my sweet tooth while avoiding the artificial sweeteners.

Once you are pretty well into Phase 2, you can just substitute natural sweeteners (of your choice) for the artificial sweeteners. Just use moderate amounts and be mindful of how much you're consuming. Figure out what works for you. There are plenty of people who do that.

As far as recipes go, as long as they don't include things like sf pudding or lite cool whip (things which you cannot control the ingredients of), you should be good to substitute something else.

(Just as an example, some people use honey in the bean brownies rather than splenda. Some use agave in yogurt rather than splenda or the like. Etc.)

Once you get your cravings under control, you can have something a little sweet here and there (like dark chocolate) .. plus being allowed fruit.. you'll probably find it easier.

I like the more natural approach also. I use stevia (not for baking though), xylito, erythritol, and whey low. They're all natural and haven't hurt my weight loss/maintenance.

I agree. I just avoid sweeteners when I can. I used to limit myself to whatever is in the NSA fudgsicle and 1 pkt of Splenda per day. I'd mix the fudgsicle, peanut butter, and splenda with yogurt instead of the FF cool whip - it just seems healthier and I enjoy it, so why mess with it?

I found that since switching to plain FF Greek yogurt, I can eliminate the Splenda. It's less tangy than regular plain FF yogurt, so there's less need to take the edge off.
