I went on SB several years ago with much success... Slipped back into my old way of eating. Recently put on almost 10 pounds in 3 weeks and paniced! Called my doctor and had my hormones tested to find I was in the mist of menopause. She recommended I use SB to help rid myself of the newly acquired belly fat! No problem. But this time around I only lost 3.5 lbs during my first two weeks! Very frustrating as in the past I had lost 8! Now I am on Ph2 and have gained back 2 lbs. In my second week of ph 2. Is there anyone else out there finding the diet not as successful while in menopause? Very frustrating.. I am following the plan carefully, with only the addition of SB cereal in am, glass of red wine at dinner and an occassional grain for dinner. Need support!

WBMom, when I first went into menopause several years ago I gained 20 pounds within 6 months. I had not changed my eating or exercise so I knew what it was from. My menopause is surgically induced (Full hysterectomy) I tried everything to get the weight off and nothing worked and finally gave sb a try and just like magic the weight started coming off. A couple of years ago I went thru a bad bout with severe depression and gained it all back and some. Since that time I have done the fatsmash and half hearted version of sb. I have managed to take some of the weight off but I know I would do better if I did a clean phase I and quit starting and restarting. As you know the weight will come off it just may take longer this time. Just remember there is a ton of support from these boards. Maybe if you do something different in phase II, it might make a difference. I hate menopause, pms was a piece of cake compared to menopause. Good luck to you

Tatertot, Thanks so much for your post! Even tho I know I am not alone in the menopause phase of my life... gaining so much weight so quickly when I am an active healthy woman with no changes per se was a real problem for me! Talk about depressed. I felt like I was 5 months pregnant! Not good... So, I quess what I am reading here is to stay positive, continue on Ph2 and be patient... the weight will come off?? :( I'm trying to stay positive so your support is very helpful! Luvstorun has suggested more veggies to my diet so I am going to do that. I also don't eat a lot of beans so I'll give that a try. I'm really not hungry with what I am eating and pretty satisfied. As long as I can have my daily glass of red wine and my 3/4 cup of cereal in the a.m. I can live with this! Thanks for your help :P

WBMom, I so can relate to some of the things you are going thru. I had always had a flat stomach, tiny waist. I would always gain in my hips and thighs, then menopause hit and all the sudden I have this round belly that jiggled. I still gained in other places but the belly was new to me. Once I hit the depression I quit exercising and ate nothing but crap. I gained real fast from that. Of course that just made me more depressed. Thank goodness for antidepressants and therapy. After awhile I got off the antidepressants and quit therapy and decided to do it on my own. One thing that really helped was exercising again. SB has also helped with my menopause symptoms. I would wake up in the middle of the night soaked head to toe and within an hour I would be freezing and don't even get me started on the extreme hot flashes when your just sitting there watching tv, they would hit out of the blue. I had alot of symptoms and still can get them but if I eat the sb way, my symptoms are very minimal. We will just continue on this way of eating and eventually the weight will come off. I know sb works. I can't wait till I get the new Southbeach Supercharged book. I pre-ordered a couple of months ago from amazon and its suppose to be here within a few weeks. We can do this. :D

I'm post menopause...and have to tell you what is said about weight after age 40/50 is SO true. When I was young, I would diet and lose fairly easily (thus the problem now...all that yo-yoing didn't help my metabolism). I think when we get "of a certain age" many of us also become "insulin resistant" and this too is a factor with our ease of losing weight.
That being said...I think we can do it regardless of age...it just might take us a bit longer. I KNOW that I'm going to be on SB for the rest of my life.
I have to do it to gain a better life-style. I know I can't go back to the "would-have, could-have, should-haves" ---but do wish I'd not lapsed from the program 5 years ago when the book first came out! I'd be so much further ahead now.
I too pre-ordered the "new" book and can't wait for it to come out!

hey wbmom, i'm a newbie still in pz.1 and think i'm having simular trouble. i'm 48 and haven't been able to lose wieght for a year or so. i tried wt.wtchrs back before xmas and no wt.loss. thats why i started sobe and because the concept of eating healthy as a lifestyle was appealing as well as not having to meassure every thing. ( i tend to be a legalist and can get obsessed easily) so i'm hoping to encourage you to stick to it and you're not alone when it comes to subburn fat. as i convince myself of the same. hope others will post some more ideas on the subject.
heres to looking at you kid :)

Yup, we're in this together. I am currently taking Yaz... my gyno just switched me to that because my estrogen levels are so low. I definitely feel better but get that blow up in my tummy right before my period. I do seem to lose a couple of pounds by the end of my period week... water, I guess. No further weight loss tho from the diet. I am on my second week of Ph2. I have learned so much from this board. I am trying to add my 4 cups of veggies every day... not an easy task for me. Although yesterday I had a bean salad with my lunch... it was great. Left me feeling satisfied! Went out to dinner for our 15th wedding anniversary and couldn't eat all of my entree... very unlike me! Disappointing but good at the same time. I plan on sticking it out and seeing what happens... really no other choice unless I decide I don't mind being OLD and Heavy!! Hang in there!
