decisions for making it last on phase 2

So I've been on phase 1 for 12 days, and I haven't had cravings in about as many days ^_^

I am going into phase 2 and I have a "battle plan" as it were for easing back into good carbs over the course of about 3 or 4 weeks. Now here is my question...is it okay to have a monthy "indulgence" as it was. (or maybe bimonthly?) essentially I don't think there is any way I can stick with this diet very long without getting frustrated and quitting, if I am deprived of my mexican food. Enchildas with chips and salad. Would it be okay and not mess me up to have this food once or twice a month? Or do I have to tee-total it? Also, would it ruin me if when I am camping to have food that isn't necessarily south beach "kosher" like hot dogs with wheat buns, energy bars, and such? Or even indulge in the rare s'more or toasted marshmallow?

Or am I being whiny? hehehe

If anyone has suggestions, that would be welcome too!! I just want to make sure I don't get frustrated and quit totally after not being able to go to my favourite resturant (I looked at their menu, there is literally NOTHING they serve there that's "kosher" except a side salad LOL) and also, what's camping without toasted marshmallows, when you've been out biking and hiking all day? I am also inclined to think it might work because this isn't a weekly thing, more of a once monthly or at MOST bi-monthly.

Del, I can't see the harm in the occasional "treat." This isn't a diet. It's a lifestyle. For instance, on a camping trip. why not plan which foods you want to eat for ONE meal. If the camping trip is a 3-day thingie and you eat carbs and sugar for all meals, it's going to take you a while to get back in the groove of no cravings, etc.

As to your favorite restaurant, again, the occasional non-SB meal isn't going to hurt. But try not to have the mindset that since you're going to that restaurant, it's okay to eat non-SB for the other two meals. Does that help?

thanks!!

Actually the cravings are weird. Since I got the resolve to do this ( and I started during the middle of PMS) I haven't had any cravings. I think it's because south beach has me eating enough to stay full. I only feel cravings when I am absolutely starving (like if I'm suck somewhere for several hours without my snacks!) and someone passes a pizza under my nose.

My husband nad I plan all out camping meals. We eat eggs for breakfast, sandwiches and cheese sticks for lunch (we're usually hiking, and so far 2 of the three meals are SB friendly) and hot dogs with buns and either smores or peach cobbler for dessert. Kind of a family tradition since we go with his family more often than not.

Seriously, thinks for the input. I don't want to set myself up for failure. I've dropped five pounds (and I've been working out) and already my clothes fit better, and my husband has been noticing it!!

I am also interested in the whole 'what to eat out camping'...

We are doing a river rafting trip down the Colorado River thru the Grand Canyon at the end of May--they supply all the meals and I am hoping to be able to stick with it. We were down at Phantom Ranch at the bottom of the Grand Canyon in March and the food was so good but not SB friendly...but I wasn't following the diet too closely that weekend and have since started phase 1 again.

While out hiking, we usually do a Clif Bar for lunch with snack/trail mix. When hiking in the Grand Canyon they tell you--now is not the time to diet--you need to replace what you are losing. Every time you take a drink of water you should be eating a salty snack or drinking gatorade/powerade. I found this really helped my hike...

So if you are going on a weeklong rafting/hiking/camping trip, what do you eat?? We are going to be hiking daily so getting a lot of activity in...

I'd pick the healthiest snack and meal possible. Enjoy and don't stress. This is a wonderful and forgiving food plan.

As far as the camping goes, you can also simply try to find healthier alternatives where possible, like 100% whole wheat hot dog buns and chicken brats/sausages for instance. Tabouli salads instead of macaroni or pasta salad and that sort of thing. And then just have the s'mores part for the real treat.

Also FWIW, give your yourself a chance to get firmly grounded in the P2 lifestyle before planning how often you can "indulge" and "treat". Once you kind of get established in it and have had some measure of success, you may find it just isn't "worth it" to you as much to have these kinds of treats as often as you might feel like you "need" them now.

Ultimately it's your plan and your choices. Part of the "making it a lifestyle" thingie is figuring out how much and how often you can stretch the guidelines. Or as a wise man once said, "Learn the rules so you know how to break them properly."
