Has anybody ever did power yoga? How is it different than the Yoga I do at home (Earth, Water and Fire videos)? Will it help you lose weight?

yes. wileybosco and I are both heated power yoga fans. We go to studios where the temp. of the room and the humidity is controlled and temps typically range in the 95 - 100 degree range. Not sure what your DVD is like, so not sure how to compare it. Are you just buying a power yoga DVD to also do at home or are you going to a gym/rec. center or an actual yoga studio? If you are doing it at home or at a gym, these environments are typicallly not heated obviously.
The main difference is that it tends to flow from posture to posture with each pose linked to a single breath if it is a vinyasa style of power yoga, so it's faster paced than most other forms of yoga. There is also likely a stronger focus on strength building postures than just stretching or flexibility or relaxation. Lots of lunge moves, yoga "pushups", core work, and so forth.
Will it help you lose weight? maybe. proper diet counts more in my book, but it may help you become more mindful and aware of your body and hunger signals along the way and affect you in ways that support a healthy lifestyle which all may lead to weight loss along the way. It may also burn a few more calories than more traditional "hatha" types of yoga. (although power yoga would still be a form of hatha yoga.)
Give it a try and let us know what you think! :) |

I bought Shiva Rea-Yoga Shakti DVD at a yard sale. It was only $1 so I thought I would try it out. I haven't had a chance to use it yet, but I have watched some of it. I am going to try to get to it tonight.

Shiva is a pretty cool lady. typically very movement oriented even within a pose. I think someone sent that one to me, but I never really practiced to it. I do much better with practicing at a studio than practicing at home to a DVD. Hope you enjoy it! :)

Power Vinyasa kicks my butt! I find it so challenging and love the effects it has had on my body. Stronger and look more fit as a result!
