| I wanted something to try to make my own salad dressing. I bought the italian mix and the little glass mixer jar. I bought red wine vinegar with garlic and had some olive oil. I think maybe my olive oil was not good. Can it go bad? I store it on the back of the oven maybe not the right place to put it. Salad dressing was very weird tasting, anyone have an opinion? |

Your olive oil is rancid. Yes, oils can spoil.
I suggest you buy some fresh olive oil and try again. |

If you just bought it, you should be able to return it. If you've had it a while, maybe buy a smaller bottle next time. You can also store it in the refrigerator, but it gets pretty thick. |

This is the problem, the heat of the oven damaged your oil. It should be stored in a natural cool place, like a pantry or cupboard.
Don't store it in the fridge either because it gets too thick and difficult to use.
I buy olive and canola oil by the gallon and I have never had any problem.
Also, I suggest, if you don't use the olive oil very often, the buy a smaller container and check the expiration date on the container. It's possible you bought an old one. |

I use a lot of olive oil. I buy a gallon size container of olive oil at Sam's Club and then I have a small oil container with a pour spout on the counter off to the side of my stove, not close enough to get the heat. The rest of the large bottle can be stored in a cool dry place away from heat (mine is in my front closet). I just refill the small container when it gets near empty.
I use olive oil so much that I really want a pourable container near my cooking area. I just bought a cheap one from World Market or Bed Bath & Beyond type place. It works great. |

This is the kind of arrangement I was thinking of when I mentioned refrigerating it. If you buy a big bottle, you can refrigerate the big one and when it's time to refill the smaller one, let the big one warm up a bit until you can pour some out. If there's any left in the big container, you can re-refrigerate it. I'm not sure what effect warming and cooling has, but it's got to be better than keeping the whole thing out. |
