I have oatmeal for breakfast most mornings and have looked out for the steel cut oats but can't find them. My local shop has a choice between the jumbo oats and the ordinary ones - the jumbo oats are twice the price though! They both take the same amount of time to cook. Is there a particular advantage to choosing the jumbo ones?
Thanks! |

I'm not sure what the difference is between the ones you mention (jumbo and ordinary). Old-fashioned are what you want... as opposed to "quick cooking" and especially "instant." If they are whole rolled oats that take a bit longer to cook (although it's really only about 5 minutes or so) then they are probably okay.
Steel cut are good too, but if you cannot find them, old fashioned are just as good (health wise). |

Yeah, not sure of the difference either. Our healthier foods outlet has "thick rolled oats" and regular rolled oats, so maybe that is similar to your "jumbo"? Anyway, the regular should be fine if they are not quick cooking or instant. The jumbo might digest more slowly would be the only advantage I can think of.
No cheaper version of McCann's over there? No store brands that compete with the name brand? |

The ones I looked at both take 7 minutes to cook (though I soak them overnight so they only take a couple of minutes in the microwave). The jumbo ones are bigger and more whole, whereas the regular ones are smaller and look like they've been broken up a bit. They're definitely not the instant type, I'm not sure what the 'quick cook' ones are.
RedRox, I don't go to the supermarket very often, I tend to shop locally so choices are limited, though I might go to Tesco tomorrow to see what they have. If nothing catches my eye, I might go for the jumbo ones anyway - I only eat 1oz a day so they're pretty good value really! |

FWIW, here in the states we have rolled oats as the most common choice. these are steamed and then rolled flat, so they are already partially cooked. they take 5-6 mins or so to cook. If they start chopping those up into smaller pieces they can cook in 2-3 mins and those are called "quick cooking" here. If they pulverize the crap out of them into almost a powder they become "instant" cooking which really means 1-2 mins in a micro. So if yours take 7 mins, those sound similar to our rolled oats. steel cut are the whole groat cut ito smaller pieces and take about 30 mins. to cook and they don't micro very well (or at all!).
your description of "more whole" for the jumbo sounds like a good thing. If it's affordable, might be your best choice, but I bet the regular are fine too. Just like the steel cut are a better choice, but the slower cooking rolled ones are good and OK too. |

| I have a question about oatmeal as well so I'm gunna add it on. One of my favourite breakfasts is raw ( prefer raw, I know it's weird) old fashioned oats (not the instant ones, ick) sprinkled with splenda and cinnamon, and a little non-fat milk. Is it okay to eat this in phase two? |

It is fine in P2 and P3. Sometimes I add raw old fashion oatmeal to a smoothie plus milk, Splenda, etc and it's very good. I have eating raw oatmeal since I was I kid
Actually, old fashion oatmeal is already processed
Enjoy, |

I think the best oats from Tesco are Scottish Porridge Oats, but they're rolled oats. But they're obviously better than Ready Brek!!!
Holland and Barratt might have something, i know my local one has quite a big organic health food section and they do loads of grains and stuff. I've not started eating porridge yet so i don't know for definite.
Let us know if you find anything! |

Thanks for the advice everyone! I actually ended up buying the regular rolled oats, as they were on special offer and I couldn't resist  Next time I will probably go for the jumbo ones though.
Gemmy, nice to see someone in the UK! Tesco only had the normal and jumbo oats (along with all the usual sugar filled crap!), but if I'm near a H&B I might pop in, didn't think of looking there (I fancy trying these steel cut oats!) |

I looked in Tesco today when I went shopping ... they also do "Organic oats" jumbo rolled oats. They're over twice the price!!! Personally I don't think there'll be that much difference. *shrugs* I dunno.
I agree it's always good to see a fellow Brit beaching it! |
