Pho, what do you think?

Do you think Pho is friendly for phases 1-2 on South Beach? For those of you who don't know what it is, it is a vietnamese noodle soup in seasoned beef broth, and your choice of different cuts of beef. Do you tink it would be allowed if you didn't eat the rice noodles? Also, spring rolls, yay or nay? I eat a lot of foreign oriental foods (I know chicken teriyaki is off limits because of the sauce and rice) including things like daifuku, pho, pocky (no-no for sure!), red bean paste fish, and sushi. Is there a resource for foreign foods on the beach?

uhm...not the ones I have. Egg rolls are friend, but the pring rolls I have (well, HAD) are wrapped in this opaque wrapping (no idea what it is) and has lettuce, bean sprouts, shrimp, and one other ingredient I can't really identify what it is (but man is it good!)

Spring roll wrappers are made from tapioca flour.... no flour's of anykind (fried or otherwise :D ) are allowed in phase 1.
The spring roll wraps are ok for phase 2.....
In phase 1 you can make your own Spring rolls using large romaine leaves......
I'd also wait on the Pho (c'mon.. no one can eat "around" the noodles! :) ).... or make your own... without noodles.

tapioca flour? really? that makes sense since they seemed to be squishy enough to remind me of the tapioca balls in bubble tea. :D

Thanks for the tips! So long pho, hopefully I can see you again on the other side ;-) hehehe

I bet you can make a great Pho using Shirataki, which is a tofu noodle. I know, I know. You're thinking, "Ugh." So did I until I gave them a try. The are wonderful in chicken noodle soup so why not in Pho?!!

You get them in the health food store or in Whole Foods in the dairy case. The whole pack is only 40 calories and is SB great in all phases.

I use them to "beef" up my serving of speghetti.

The rice noodles in pho are on the list of P2 foods to add. The problem, as with most grains in P2 you don't control, is the serving size. A 1/2 cup is serving size and I suspect most bowls of pho have at least 2 and maybe up to 4 servings worth in them, depending on the size of the bowl and the place you are ordering it from. And many of the traditional meats like tripe, tendon and the meatballs would not be SB friendly either, so you would have to stick to the round steak for the beef portion for the most part.

All of that said, if you like the stuff it's one of those "everything in moderation" items that you should be able to enjoy on occasional basis in P2 and P3.

sweet!

I usually order a really small bowl, the broth REALLY fills me up, and I only really eat the round steak anyway. I like the meatballs, but few places can do them right.

We only go out to eat occasionally, so it works out great that way. I may just save it for the end of phase 2 or just hold off altogether for phase 3. It's about sacrifice, right? ;-)

well some think so... ;) There's a difference between sacrifice and deprivaton though. As long as you view it as a sacrifice in order to gain a greater good, then that's a positive thing. If you feel like you are being deprived of it because of the dang "rules" or the "stupid diet", then not such a positive response. Everyone kind of gets to a point, or probably should get to a point, in P2 where they are pretty comfortable with it and can start to entertain whether continued sacrifice is warranted or whether it's ok to start experimenting with "moderation". Not really a lot of difference between the later stages of P2 and P3 IMO, other than if you are still losing weight or not and the level of boundary stretching you're willing to play with.
