Today is April 9, 2008 and I started Phase 1 on April 7. Being the 3rd day, I do feel a bit of detox going on as I woke this morning with a lousy headache. I also spent the night going to the bathroom-- I suppose, letting go of the water weight.
I was warned that I might not feel very good the first few days but that if I'm patient, I will break through and feel much better. I must admit, I already feel lighter and feel the bloating in my stomach going down, in spite of the lousy headache.
I can really see how this is going to work because normally on a diet I'm craving sweets or fries at this time but it's only day 3 and my craving is for some good fresh fruit. I will wait the appropriate 2 weeks but then will begin to treat fruit as my dessert and I know it will have the exact same effects. I just need to get the "yuk" out of me first. Don't you just love detox? Bad breath, smelly bathroom trips, headaches and so on. :?
But I'm changing the way I look at those side effects and remember that these are signs that I am doing everything correctly! That's something to be excited about! They say that by day 4, the side effects should begin to disappear and I will settle into a nice eating pattern. I'll post here again on Friday and let you know if that's true!
I have a tremendous amount of wait to lose (120 pounds) and I didn't put it on overnight. For me, this is a serious health matter and something that I HAVE to do. I can't think of a healthier way to do this than the South Beach Program. It is filled with healthy choices and I know those choices are exactly what my body needs.
I'm in this for the long haul!

Hi!
First of all welcome to the forum and welcome to SB.
The first few days are awful. I had headaches and felt really tired and drained. But it passes and it's amazing when you see the effects. :)
I wish you all the luck in your world for your lifestyle change. You'll find a lot of support and useful information on this forum!
Keep it up! |

| bad breath is often a sign of ketosis which is from going too low carb and not something we try to get to in SB. make sure you are getting in your good carbs in P1 with milk/yogurt, beans and lots of veggies! hang in there! |

Redrox, thanks for the suggestion. I'll keep that in mind should it become an issue.
Today is day 4 and will be my first day at the office since I started. I had a nasty cold to kick this thing off and so it's been hard to eat at all. Everything tastes like cardboard, know what I mean? :?
I'm going to have to search for variety to stay strong through the next week and a half. One thing I found in my cupboard is turkey chile. It has meat and beans and only 2 grams of sugar. I'm assuming it's okay in phase 1 but I will wait and see if one of you who are more familiar with the program can confirm that.
It seems like there was one other thing I wanted to ask about but I can't remember right now. :?:
I feel better today than yesterday. My headache is there but much lighter than it was. I definitely need to make sure I'm drinking my water and eating my veggies today!
Have a great one, everybody.

Day 5! Woohoo!
Well, I've kicked the cold so now my taste buds have returned and I'm finding myself a bit hungry today. I'm not sure what's going on but I'd really like to eat some crackers right now! I've settled for a diet Hanson's tangerine-lime soda instead. Yum!
So far so good but the big challenge will be tomorrow because I'm going on a family outing to the beach to picnic and enjoy the sun. I'm packing everything ahead of time but the temptation of the saltwater taffy or ice cream cone.......you know..........all the things that come with a trip to the beach......well..............they'll all be there.
I think I'll do okay but I need to make sure I have something along for all the different types of cravings that may come.
Have a great weekend, everybody.

| Hey there, Just wondering how you were doing and especially how you did on your outing. I give you credit for trying to prepare yourself and bring along healthy choices. I don't know how strong I would be at the beach. Just the smell alone would make me want salt water taffy and a whole bunch of other stuff. LOL. |

Hi, jujyfruit.
Last weekend went really well. I made one royal mistake though and had to figure a way to overcome it. We were rushing around in the morning getting ready to go and I was busy packing our lunches to make sure I had everything I needed for the day. We drove off and less than a mile from home I realized we hadn't eaten breakfast.
For my hus, that's easy. He just picked up a bagel at a grocery store but for me, it wasn't that simple. I didn't want to go off the program for anything so while he was in the store, I got into the cooler and ate my lunch for breakfast. It was a good thing I did because just like you said, the sights and smells of the beach can also stir the appetite. To say nothing of the 4 mile walk we took.
We decided to go out to lunch/dinner and I was pretty hungry at that point so I carefully looked over the menu and ordered a fabulous blackened salmon salad and it was delicious! And filling! I gave my husband the cheese toast that came with it and asked the waitress to leave off the croûtons and bring the dressing on the side. The salmon was so good that I never touched the dressing.
Anyway, I guess the point is that you don't have to go off the program, even in a bind. You just might have to re-arrange the program.
It was a great day at the beach! Thanks for asking.

I just started the SBD on Monday--I am very impressed with how you handled yourself on your beach outing! WTG.
I had homemade Chili last night and it was soooo good. I really was aching for carbs and those beans hit the spot! (then a cup of FF Buttermilk later got rid of the carb craving completely.) I have never found a canned Chili that I liked.
My chili is super simple!
1 pound lean ground beef
2 cans of whole Tomotoes
1 can light kidney beans
1 can dark kidney beans
1 onion
1 tablespoon chili powder
Season to taste
Saute ground beef, chili powder and onions until meat and onions are browned. Add Tomatoes and kidney beans. Season with salt/pepper or other seasonings you enjoy and are allowed. Bring to boil. Stir well, turn to simmer for about 45 minutes, stirring occassionally.
I usually put a dollop of FF sour cream on top when I serve it.
Good luck and keep up the work!! |

Congratulations Sam on overcoming that forgotten breakfast situation
You could have used that as an excuse to blow off SB for the day, but instead you were creative and have earned a gold star ...

I suppose it's time for an update. :D
I am in my second week of phase 2 and haven't had any problems at all. I lost 2 pounds last week and that is my weekly goal. There are approximately 34 weeks left in 2008. If I lose 2 pounds per week I will be 64 pounds lighter at Christmas. If I add to that the nearly 20 pounds I've already lost, that will be around 80-85 pounds!
I need to repeat again that I absolutely need to look at this as a life style change and not a diet, and see the 85 pound weight loss as an external sign of an internal change.
I'm so glad I stuck like glue to phase 1 because I feel like I am totally in control of my life again. It's not just the food, it's everything!
Woohoo!!!
