Hi everyone, I wasn't sure who to ask so I thought this was the best way.
I am 5'2 and weigh 207 I was at the gym last week doing cardio and one of the trainers came up to me and asked if I'd like to join in the yoga flow class (mix of yoga, thai chi and pilaties) I have never done yoga before and always thought I would try it once I lose my belly.
I was wondering if any of you yoga gurus think yoga would be good for someone of a larger size. I would think that my belly fat would get in the way and make it hard for me to do some of the moves, is this true? Also, is yoga as good for you as cardio, or is it better for someone on the large size to stick to cardio for now and work their way into yoga?
Advice anyone?
(Thanks so much in advance!)

Well you will never find me arguing against yoga for any reason! ;)
For every posture there are always modifications to account for people of all shapes and sizes and ability levels. If you mention your concerns to your instructor before class they can often discretely suggest them along the way in their verbal cues and guidance. And a flow class incorporating those components may be more cardio oriented than you imagine. But if it isn't, get in some additional cardio after or another day. (or before once you get used to the level of effort in the class and whether that makes sense to you or not)
There are a lot of supplementary benefits with a regular practice as well that I think help with the whole lifestyle change and process orientation of a long term weight loss, weight maintenance and wellness program. It's really more than simply "exercise" if you remain open to all it's possibilities and benefits.
Give it a try! You never know what you might find! :)
P.S. We have a yoga thread around here somewhere. just doesn't get used much as the few of us that used to contribute semi-regularly do so now in a similar yoga thread on nessa's board instead. |

| Back when I was exercising regularly, I was doing pilates and cardio on an every other day system - it worked out quite nicely! I was getting enough cardio to satisfy, and I was getting in a workout 6 days a week. The pilates (and I'm assuming yoga would do the same) really helped limber me up and make the cardio easy, and it was nice to have the relaxing workout every other day. Try it out and enjoy! |

Thank you all so much for your input! I am going to try out the class and see. Red, I will also mention to the instructor my concerns!
It will also be a nice change from boring treadmill/elliptical!
Thanks!!! |

| Well I'm huge and I actually *like* yoga! I never really thought of it as results producing exercise, like cardio and crunches and running, until I actually did it. I break a sweat doing my dvd at home! Granted some of the moves are harder for me b/c I have this huge gut in the way (for now...) and I'm 5'10" or so. But since I'm at home anyway I just figure I do the best I can and one day catch up. I really, really like doing it. It sure beats those other monotonous boring routines. It's not all jostling and rushed and frantic like aerobic type clases; it's smoother moves and more relaxing. But you do feel it later. |

Hey Cottonlily -
I'm home recovering from surgery. I'm interested in doing yoga to help with the fatigue I'm dealing with and to help keep my metabolism up. What Yoga DVDs do you recommend. I'll be at home for another 3 weeks and I want to get started. |

mom41, Megan Garcia's "just my size" yoga has come up here several times and has gotten positive reviews here and the personal reviews at Amazon also give good grades.

The Peggy Cappy "yoga for the rest of us" shown in the "customers also bought" area looks like a good one too! :)
enjoy your practice! :) |
