self-consciousness at the gym

Does anyone experience this? I just started on P1 because I recently put on a LOT of weight. I'm horribly self-conscious about it, and I feel awkward all the time. The gym just makes it worse. I feel like I'm on display, and it doesn't help that everyone there is so FIT. I feel like they are looking at me like "ewww, you're too fat to be here!"

So yeah, does anyone else experience this? What do you do about it? I don't mind exercising, i rather enjoy it at home, but I HATE going to the gym. And it doesn't help that work out clothes are unflattering anyway. This is pretty much the ONLY thing keeping me from exercising, excepting time of course ;)

I think it's pretty normal to feel that way. Even as a guy (maybe more as a guy?) I felt this way at times when I started back to working out in a gym and I had already lost a bunch of weight by then. I think you just have to realize that you probably care more about it than anyone else there. They are just there to work out just like you and may be wrapped up in their own workouts and own headspace, that they really probably aren't thinking anything like what you are projecting into their thoughts about you. And you never know, for every "mean" person actually thinking "what is she doing here", there are probably two or more people thinking, "yay! look what she's doing to make herself better! good for her!"

Go for it! If you are paying to be a member, you have just as much right to be there as anyone else and no need to feel badly about it. You are there for the same purpose they are. Some folks may just be a bit further along on their own journey. Usually they enjoy having company! ;)

Also maybe the passage on the following link will inspire you! I read it a lot in times of unnecessary self doubt or self deprecation. Our Deepest Fear

You know, this used to be a major fear of mine, which is why I would chose a late shift so I could work out at a gym late at night.

However, I discussed this with a friend of mine, who has done research in this field (she has a degree in nutrition and is a certified personal trainer) who gave some interesting insight. Most people, at the gym, are paying attention to what it is they are doing more than others around them (unless they HAVE to.) I agree workout clothes are unflattering, but the best thing to do is find some YOU like and feel comfortable in. That way, when you go to the gym, you're in something that makes YOU feel good, and you're in high spirits.

I look at the people I work out with (I work out at work since we have a gym there) and instead of thinking "boy, he/she/it looks awful", I think "I'm glad that person is taking control of themselves."

Sure, people are going to be judgmental. Everyone is. But, rest assured, no one will say it to your face, but if they did, you will have people back you up in saying that it's rude.

thanks guys. Hopefully one of these days I can get up the courage to go. I know once i get in I will get addicted to exercise again, it's just hard to go when you feel like you have no time lol
