Role/Function of Vegetables???

Hi Everyone,
I have this question about veggies...it has to do with the fact that last August when I did SBD for the 1st time, I had tremendous success and followed the veggie requirements to the T. It was awful as I was almost gagging daily eating that many veggies, but I made it, lost 25 lbs.

This month I started again and my progress has been soooo slow. I am eating the exact same (I emphasize that) amounts and types of foods as last time (I kept a journal to follow) EXCEPT not as many veggies (only about 2 cups/day)

Sooo...I'm wondering why I can't lose the weight this time (I had regained 10 lbs back since stopping last year, so I'm trying to lose that plus lots more). And could the veggies reaaaally BE the reason for my slow/nonexistent loss, EVENTHOUGH I am eating the exact same amounts/types of food as last time and not cheating at all???

What is the function of veggies in the diet, BESIDES the nutritional value that your body needs? Does it have a physiological effect on your WL, which is what I'm missing? Or is it just to fill you up so you eat less of other stuff, which would not apply to me because I am NOT eating any more of the other stuff in lieu of veggies?
I am stumped. Just really bothering me that this is not happening!
I am also exercising daily, and 3 x a week I do an advanced cardio class.
I've got + or - 50 lbs to lose.
Thanks so much in advance,

veggies = high volume, low calories, good nutrition. many who return after being off program do not experience the same results subsequent times around as they did the first time. may have nothing to do with more or less veggies, but you should still eat the 4.5 cups of veggies per day as this program really is ALL about the veggies. They're really good for you in lots of ways. They are the only unlimited food group really.

other thought is that without them you might not eating enough to allow you to lose the weight. but really it's hard to make causal relationships between X and Y about weight loss. Keep plugging away, eat right and exercise and slow progress is better than no progress! :)

If the last time you did SBD you ate more veggies and ate until you were satiated, and this time you are eating less veggies and still eating until you are satiated...then you must be filling up on more protein, etc.?

Thanks for the encouragement Red!

oldpjams: Nope, not eating more of anything, just not getting satiated, I'm pretty much feeling like I don't eat enough, but I'm okay with that as I know it's a big sacrifice and I will get benefits out of it...so no, not eating more :(

I will keep at it, thank you for helping.

i think the issue needs to be how we can help you find more veggies you like to eat...

because just like last time, if you can't find veggies you like to eat in adequate amounts you will stop following the healthy lifestyle regain weight and have to go through this all over again.

I was thinking that, too, Nessa. This idea of gagging over veggies isn't conducive to the lifestyle change. It doesn't do any good to live that way to lose weight if you then go off the plan and gain it back.

Maybe you aren't getting adequate fuel since you aren't eating enough. You need to try a bunch of new recipes to find veggies that you like, as Nessa said.

Since you're not eating as much this time around (less veggies) that explains not feeling satiated. I agree on needing to find what you do like and the right way to prepare them so you like what you are eating. It's going to be hard to stick with a lifestyle change and keep weight off without fitting more veggies into your day.

I also agree that the second time around the weight doesn't come off as fast ~ that goes for pretty much any diet plan, not just SBD. An unfortunate fact of life.

always a good reason to not "do it" more than once! ;)

Thanks everyone - I am back up to 4 1/2 cups this week, we'll see what happens...I have nothing against veggies, please know that, I WANT to like them, but they don't exactly like ME (I get all kinds of stomach side effects from eating them in quantities...so I've gotten some trauma).
So, again, thank you for the replies and support.
Have a great week.

You may find you get used to eating them - I think it takes the body a while to adjust to anything new (which is why people often get the 'SB flu' in the first few days of Phase 1, but find if they return to eating 'bad carbs' later into the diet, they don't feel so good).

Make sure you look at the recipes on this site, there are loads for veggies and I'm sure you'll find something suitable.

Good luck!

ah so if you like them but they do not like you we still should work with that.

for example.. .roasted cauliflower does not give me gas but steamed cauliflower does.... so i only eat roasted cauliflower... stuff like that.....
