Hi Everyone, first time poster here. I'm Terri, stay-at-home wife and mother to 6. I just finished nursing my last baby and am ready for serious weight loss.
I had my annual physical at my dr. today and she highly recommends the SB diet. I've done it before a few yrs. ago, getting into phase 2 and just stopped, I guess I got sick of it. I remember phase 1 was HORRIBLE: the headaches and weakness. I think I lost about 10 lbs., though.
One thing is, I do not like a lot of the foods that are OK, especially in p1. I DETEST eggs in any way, shape, or form. I forced myself to eat omlets and gagged on every bite and pinched my nose shut while I ate. My dh laughed at me. However, I can tolerate egg dishes, like a breakfast casserole w/ham, cheese, and broccoli. (I usually make these using less eggs than what the recipe calls for). I do not like a lot of veggies: cucumbers, green or any color peppers, celery. I like gr. beans, broccoli, cauliflour, carrots, corn, and peas. Will not touch mushrooms. And I do not like anything fat free, I'm sorry, but it's not food.
So, WHAT CAN I EAT?! I do remember from a few yrs. ago eating a lot of plain hamburgers with some homemade ketchup, even for breakfast. I also ate a lot of salads with purple onion, feta cheese, and some vinegar dressing. Not a big variety. I think that's why I quit, I got so bored.
Is it possible to find recipes with foods I like and are allowed? Thanks!

check out the faq. you never have to eat eggs... ever!
there are tons of recipes in the food area... recipe lover has done a great job with them
we don't eat fat free food... so i'm not sure where you got that idea from. |

I will check out the faq, I haven't had time to navigate the boards yet.
I just remember from a few years ago finding SB recipes that used FF cheese and sour cream. I notice in the book a lot of the recipes use reduced fat/low fat foods which I really don't like, either, but will put up with it. I just noticed a lot of the seafood recipes, scratch those off my list, too. No fish, shrimp, tuna, etc. for me. Wow, and I thought my kids were picky! :roll: |

You really need to go into this with an open mind imo. I have tried things I detest. I would never touch cauliflower, broccoli or artichokes. I have tried all of them in multiple forms now. I have concluded I do not like broccoli cooked but raw with a little dip is fine and it turns out I like artichokes in many different ways but not all.
As far as reduced fat and fat free, yes you will need to do that for cheese, sour cream and milk at the very least. Again I went from a whole milk drinking to 2% to 1%. I wont be going skim because I dont like it. I see no problems with reduced fat or fat free cheese, its not gross to me in any way. The only downfall of fat free sour cream I see is the consistency is a little more watery than regular. My niece told me it was gross and she wasnt touching it I asked her to just taste it. She agreed it wasnt gross at all. Ive also gotten my brother in law that swore that turkey bacon was nasty to try the brand I use and he admitted it was good.
I will admit its a bit of a game. Yes brand matters greatly. The turkey bacon I have tried Jennie-O I ate 2 bites as did my husband and we threw out the package. If the stores are out of Oscar Meyer I wont get anything, I will just do without. For sour cream I only but Kudsens. There are only certain brands of yogurt I like as well. There is also a huge difference in texture and taste of different brands of ricotta cheese.
You are going to need to explore and see what works for you. I have no idea how much you have to lose but if you are going in with the mindset that you arent willing to touch any of these foods, I wouldnt recommend wasting your time. I still have a whole list of things that I am going to give another try that I have not tried again yet. Eggplant is one, squash etc.
BTW I dont like seafood either, other than tuna fish. You can still do the diet without fish. Although my mother told me the same thing about fish, I need to explore the food more. She told me that the best dish she ever had in her life was some fish that my great uncle made on the beach when she was visiting. She is not a huge fish fan either. I have tasted things my husband has had, such as shrimp again, but the texture is very off putting to me. |

Thanks for your reply. You know, I am actually quite excited to start this. When I wrote my original post yesterday I was like, "UGH", not sure about this, but I just got back from the grocery store and bought some P1 items and it's not too bad. Now that I have access to many more recipes than I did about 4 yrs. ago, I think I can do this. I also just bought the revised Good Fats Good Carbs Guide.
You are right, I have to "play around" a bit with the foods to know what will work and what won't. I'm thankful for this message board!

Sounds like a good start. I know it sucks to buy things not like them and have to basically throw money away, I know believe me I do. The way I think about it is, would I rather spend $4 and not like something and throw it away or would I rather be this fat or fatter for the rest of my life and not be able to enjoy life.
Its a little different for you than for me obviously because I have such a huge amount to lose. But thats basically what it came down to for me. Much of my veggies are salad. I can live with that. I found some good thousand island dressing that follows sbd guidelines.. its made by bolthouse farms. I also like italian. I love olives, carrots etc. I dont even miss the croutons! I love rf cheddar cheese sticks from trader joes, i love laughing cow light cheese wedges (garlic and herb) these are all things I would never have tried before because i had no reason to.
There is a recipe I know you are just starting phase one. But when you make it to phase 2, this is one of my very favorite recipes, its from one of the sbd cookbooks, breadcrumbs are easy to make from sbd friendly breads, i just stick a few pieces on a cookiesheet and dry them out in the oven. The I use the food processor (or just put them in a bag and smash the heck out of them)
Oven-fried Chicken with Almonds
Servings: (3) Yield: (--)
½ cup whole wheat bread crumbs
⅛ cup (1/2 ounce) grated Parmesan cheese
⅛ cup finely chopped almonds
1 tablespoon chopped parsley
½ clove garlic, crushed
½ teaspoon salt
⅛ teaspoon dried thyme
Pinch of ground black pepper
⅛ cup extra virgin olive oil
1 lb. boneless, skinless chicken breasts, pounded to 1/2" thickness and cut into 6 pieces
Sprig Italian parsley, for garnish
Instructions
Preheat the oven to 400°F.
In a medium bowl, combine the bread crumbs, cheese, almonds, parsley, garlic, salt, thyme, and pepper. Mix thoroughly.
Place the oil in a shallow dish. Dip the chicken first in the oil, then dredge in the crumb mixture. Place the chicken in a shallow baking pan.
Bake for 25 minutes, or until a thermometer inserted in the center of a piece registers 170°F and the juices run clear. (Do not turn the chicken during cooking.) Garnish with the parsley
