I know that Soy or Almond milk is supposed to be counted in our 2 cups of milk/dairy a day and I was wondering why...
A) it is not dairy
B) Both kinds of my almond and soy milk have 1 gram carb/0 grams sugar/ and either 40 or 70 calories an 8 oz glass! The way I figure that should be more of a protein (its filled with protein) and not a dairy since there is no naturally occurring sugars..
Am I wrong about this? Anyone know?

nope. maybe because some types are sweetened perhaps so would be more comparable? maybe just because they have "milk" in the label? ;)

I would look at it from the other direction. SBD is allowing you to count soy or almond milk as part of your dairy intake even tho they aren't dairy. I would guess this is so that the diet supports people who make those choices for any number of reasons. It's not as tho counting soy or almond milk as dairy is going to force you to forgo some other dairy as part of your daily menu -- is it? I can't think of what else you would eat in that category...most everything else SBD treats as protein...e.g. cheese.

Thanks for your replies! I actually use the 2 cups dairy allowance for my tall non fat latte and my plain yogurt each day so I didnt know if I had to forego my almond milk as a treat since I am already using the 2 cups. Thoughts??

I would skip the extra calories, or budget it into your dairy allotment. I'm thinking they might add sugar to almond milk, though, so it really isn't comparable to actual milk with natural low GI milk sugars. Probably best to forgo that as part of your food makeover.

No thats the thing....they DONT add any sugar to both almond AND soy milk varieties I buy. There is 0 sugar in both and thus 1 carb for 8 oz glass. I drink regular fat free milk in my lattes cause my body needs the boost of nat sugar in phase 1 or I get really lethargic. I get no boost from the other kinds so Id hate to substitute them in coffee.

Then you should have your 2 cups of skim milk and skip the other stuff. It doesn't sound like it's doing anything for you anyway.

If you read the answers from others in this tread the answer is either you drink your 2 cups of low-fat milk OR up to 2 cups of no sugar added soy/almond milk, or a combination of both.
