| Or I should jogging I should say. Actually walking right now. Years ago when I was in shape I would walk/jog for about an hour every night. I've never really been a 'runner'. So now that I'm very not in shape I've started walking again and even jogged a little last night (yes I'm alive, but barely!) I know there are lots of runners here. Does anyone have a good beginners routine or some advice? Like how often for how long? And when should I add the jogging back in? I know you have to push yourself but I don't want to do too much too soon. |

Hi cottonlily....
I think for a beginner I'd recommend the "Couch to 5k" program..
http://www.coolrunning.com/engine/2/2_3/181.shtml
also.... here is an older thread you might like to check out... maybe even add to it and bump it up in case anyone else is interested in starting the program with you?

| Very interesting. Not what I was doing at all. Glad I got wise. I would have been walking forever and never worked up to jogging properly. Thanks again! |

I agree: The Cool Running Couch-to-5K is a great program. :)
FYI: By the time you get to running a 5K and more, you might want to think about upping your carbs. "Running on empty" or low-carbs will make you bonk/hit the wall real fast! |

Luckily SB is not a low-carb way of eating....
Plenty of good carbohydrate resources to get you through any running distance. |

You may want to contact the race directors ahead of time and see what they are serving at their feeding stations..... you may have to plan ahead.
I am sure there will be plenty of fruit... and veggies.... be nice to have whole wheat bagels and pasta (whole wheat probably won't happen) ....brown rice would be good (as opposed to white).... steel cut oats maybe (over quick cooking)???
Dairy, beans, lots of protein?? |

No problem there, I work and run with them all the time! (and yes! Sssh don't tell, but I still always carry my own food anyway!) |

I read your post in the phase 2 forum.....
Quote: I'm not doing SBD now, I don't need to:) At 5ft 5" I'm 133 pounds (from 188)
I've kept off the 50+ pounds for more than 2 yrs now, and have done that with the aid of a variety of low or reduced carb foods...some of which don't fit in with the ideals of SBD, but which are, nonetheless lower in carb than standard cereals.
Some of the ingredients in SBD bars and other products are far from ideal too.
I do "watch" my carbs. I keep them below 100g a day because I feel better when I do that.
First, I find if very impressive that you've not only lost and maintained your weight for two years.... but you are doing the Trans Rockies.... pretty awesome!
(though I am sure for training you'll be increasing your daily carb intake a bit....) .
However, you mentioned you don't need to do SB anymore....
FWIW... I've been maintaining (in phase 3) for three years....
(tweaking it according to my training needs... but SB nonetheless)...
What made you decide not to continue on in Phase 3? |

After SBD and other diets before it, I felt like I needed a break from dieting per se (hence the user name!)
So far so good!
I do, occasionally go back to SBD, when I need to control or reduce my weight for an event/occasion or race! But mostly I eat whatever I like (always in moderation) and feel better for not calling it a .... 'd' word!
I missed the Trans Rox last year, and did the Pikes Peak Ascent instead!
This year I pestered my colleagues relentlessly to let me know when registration opened for this year's race, and got in. :D
I will have to increase my carbs substantially during training, and am consulting with a Train Right coach to perfect this and other nutritional needs. |
