Harmful Effects of Artificial Sweeteners

Aspartame, the artificial chemical used as a sugar substitute (Equal, Nutrasweet etc) is MUCH more harmful to your health than actual sugar. The FDA allows major corporations (i.e. Coca-Cola Company) to label products as "diet" once the artificial chemical (aspartame) has been added.

Not only is there much controversy as to whether the chemical has any benefits in regard to weight loss but the FDA failed to thoroughly review experimental test data which suggested a relationship between aspartame and cancer in lab rats.

Aspartame was first synthesized in 1965 by chemist James M. Schlatter as a possible anti-ulcer drug. However for 15 years the FDA refused to approve the chemical because studies and tests indicated that aspartame may cause cancer in lab rats. That all changed in 1981 when Reagan took office and appointed Arthur Hull Hayes as FDA commisioner. Immediately after, Donald Rumsfeld who was then CEO of G.D. Searle (the company that owned the patent on Aspartame) reapplied the chemical for FDA approval, and the chemical was finally approved.

Before and since the FDA approved Aspartame in 1981 various studies have shown that long term effects on lab rats and other test animals given aspartame include; development of tumors, lymphona, deterioration of skin tissue, and loss of vision.

In 1980 the FDA even intervened a Public Board of Inquiry (PBOI) which was investigating the relationship between aspartame and brain cancer in lab rats. The FDA also chose to ignore "The Bressler Report" in the approval process, an FDA report collection of all raw and summary experimental data on the subject which cited many unanswered questions pertaining to cancer development in test animals.

“In any such study of even a few hundred test animals, it takes no more than a dozen or so of them to exhibit a particular lesion… to associate with the test agent, i.e., aspartame or its related chemicals.” - Dr. Adrian Gross, FDA toxicologist in a letter to Senator Howard Metzenbaum, Oct. 30, 1986.

I'm sorry but 10 posts in the test and spam area so u could post links in your 11th message here and you lose a LOT of credibility in my book. And a hotmail emaill address only adds to that perception. buh-bye now...

Here is a good link from an unpartial source on food additives. BTW, they don't care for aspartame all that much either. And FWIW, it is possible to do both SB and eat healthily without consuming a lot of artificial sweeteners.

Source: http://www.cspinet.org/reports/chemcuisine.htm

Their bottom line:
Center for Science in the Public Interest wrote: In a 2006 study, U.S. National Cancer Institute researchers studied a large number of adults 50 to 69 years of age over a five-year period. There was no evidence that aspartame posed any risk. However, the study was limited in three major regards: It did not involve truly elderly people (the rat studies monitored the rats until they died a natural death), the subjects had not consumed aspartame as children, and it was not a controlled study (the subjects provided only a rough estimate of their aspartame consumption, and people who consumed aspartame might have had other dietary or lifestyle differences that obscured the chemical’s effects).

The bottom line is that lifelong consumption of aspartame probably increases the risk of cancer. People—especially young children—should not consume foods and beverages sweetened with aspartame, should switch to products sweetened with SUCRALOSE (Splenda), or should avoid all artificially sweetened foods. Two other artificial sweeteners, SACCHARIN and ACESULFAME-K, have also been linked to a risk of cancer.

RedRox---Couldnt have said it better myself!

In MANY diet forums, preachers come in and shout to everyone-- "You're wrong to do this diet! Artificial sweeteners are dangerous!"

Well, even if there are risk associated with that stuff, nobody says we have to O.D. on it anyway, haha. :P So many people think that, because you're going on a diet plan, you have to load your body with artificial sweeteners...

But what about all the other food choices you are given on a healthy diet?? People need to understand that eating healthier is about creating all NEW habits. Making healthier choices. Not simply replacing all your old candy and sweet drinks with "artificial sweetener" substitutes. IMO, those are meant to be ocaisonal treats. But not a constant indulgance, several times a day.

What's wrong with having regular fruit, and fat-free yogurt for desert? It doesn't always have to be something artificially sweetened. :)

This "General Chat" forum attracts a lot of spammers and strange posts. I probably should have just deleted it. Thought I'd try and make it a little educational along the way. ;)

I've also heard that Aspartame is very unhealthy, but Splenda is good because it's made out of real sugar.

It may start out as sugar, but that's about as close as it gets. IMO, they use pretty deceptive advertising in that regard and they have been sued on that particular issue as well. There is nothing particularly "natural" about splenda either.

I once heard somewhere (not verified, you understand!) that you'd have to drink a bathtub full of diet coke every single day to get enough of the harmful substances in you to harm you....

Personally I don't like it either, but as you all have said, it's not like you have to eat the stuff. And it's not like you SHOULD be replacing all the bad stuff you were eating with IT just because you don't want to really change your way of eating.
