Real-life "SB" group, like weight watchers?

Why is there not such a thing? I wish there was... a friend of mine said there is a new Weight Watchers group starting up in my town. I would love to join for the real-life support and inspiration, but I think I would feel an "inner conflict" because I am a South Beach advocate. I've heard that WW has a low-glycemic plan. Perhaps I could join and use that? But... for the money ($144 for 12 weeks!) I could just keep doing SB and talking to all of you!

Thoughts?

I've never heard of a South Beach oriented group. However, I've seen a group called T.O.P.S. ( taking off pounds sensibly)advertised in our local newspaper. I think it is a nationwide thing and you can be on any plan you like. It is like weight watchers meetings without the W.W. plan being used by everyone. Here is the website where you can see if there are any in your area and other information.http://www.tops.org

the core plan of WW is similar to SBD... but i don't know of an SBD group.

there is TOPS or Overeaters Anyonmous but that's a 12 step program.

Hi guys!

I've been to both of those groups ago (Overeaters Anonymous and TOPS) Neither group inspired me. I think it was just a matter of group dynamics and me not fitting in. One group was run by an 80 lb woman who liked to gossip and whose claim to fame in the world of weight loss was losing 15 lbs. The other group was tiny, and very permissive when it came to actually losing. We did a lot of reading aloud from books and in 3 months - I lost nothing, and neither did anyone else.

I'm sure TOPS and OA are very good programs, but when you don't have a good group dynamic, what can you do?

WW groups around here seem to thrive, but like I said, I don't feel like I can walk around giving WW credit for my weight loss when I am following SB.

well for my 2 cents, i'd buy more lettuce with the 144 dollars and get Your support here........ There are specific groups here so find one that 'fits' and just fit in here!
Best!mots

i remember one 'meeting' where a member confessed to having bags of left over Easter candy in her trunk and after the meeting, You guessed it!
Her trunk was popped and everyone was helping her 'dispose' of the candy!

I've been a "member" of OA and also with WW and to be honest, it takes a very special group dynamic for it to be really a "support group". The OA one seemed to be one where people "dumped" even though you're not supposed to. It seemed to me that people just whined, cried etc. about their weight and I didn't see results with any of them...I did well on it for a time but of course like anything else, you have to do the program to make it work.
WW---generally the groups were way too large and the leader lectured. A support group to me would be a 'small group' (3 or 4 up to no more than 12 people) where you could really share.
For me....I've been doing "food plans" (I'm choosing not to say 'diet' here) for so long that I can really do the plan on my own. I like this forum as there are so many threads and we can pop in any time with questions etc. for help. I'm thinking for more "personal" interaction we could possibly establish that with asking questions personally or by being here on a regular basis!

I'm in the UK and go to Slimming World. I do really enjoy it and find the group very supportive, though it is a bit strange now that I've started SB and am doing well (I haven't told anyone about this!). SB is a bit like one of the SW plans, but we're allowed more oil and cheese - I find SB less restrictive, but it's working better for me. I plan to continue going until I reach my target, as I have good friends there and enjoy the support. Plus when you get to your goal weight you can attend the group for free, so long as you stay within 3lb of your goal. I think it will be very helpful in me staying at target.

Having said that, I've attended other slimming groups (not WW though) and found them pretty useless.
