Hi All! I just started "again" on March 3rd and yes, I've made note of the few changes since I did SB a few years ago. This is really awesome! But, my question is "how much is too much hummus throughout the day?" See, I discovered a brand called Sabra and I've fallen in love with the Jalapeno one. I adore spicy foods and they seem to curb cravings because the heat lingers longer in my mouth than milder foods. Seems to work for me anyway...
The reason I'm asking about the hummus is because I went through the entire 10 oz. container in one day with assorted raw veggies and I had a stomache ache, big-time! I didn't have any of the gassier veggies like cabbage etc but I still feel bloated and have only lost 1 lb. so far. Is hummus listed as unlimited by any chance?
Thanx! |

The serving size for hummus is 2 Tbsp. It can have a high fat content due to the tahini and olive oil (also the beans are calorie dense).
On the bright side.... non-starchy veggies are unlimited. :D |

| Thanx! I'll be adjusting the quantity ASAP! I'm thinking I'll use it as a spread on a lettuce leaf wrap for lunch. The flavor is awesome but the side effects so far are not so great. Most of all, I want to lose weight so I don't want to mess up |

I thought it was more like a 1/4 cup (4 tbl.) from some posts by Nessa somewere, but yeah it's calorie dense and should be less than a 10 oz. container per day! ;)
you can get your "beans" in from other sources too, like um... beans!!! :) |

not by me. while i eat way more than 1/4 cup a day, the good carbs good fats book says 1/2 cup of chickpeas as hummus is one serving. I would take that to mean 1/4 cup....
but i always thought it was 2 tablespoons....
10 oz is way too much.. I buy the sabra garlic hummus at Costco and measure it out. if i got the 10 oz i would eat the whole thing in one day and that's like 800 calories of just hummus. |

I think it was that GFGC conversion you suggested somewhere. I still prefer my black bean mixture anyway!!
BTW to the OP, the FAQ sticky thread has links to an updated food list for each phase and a menu planning template on how to organize a daily meal plan and both of those will identify the limits on all the foods that have them, which is pretty much all of them with the exception of non-starchy veggies which only has a minimum of 4.5 cups/day and truly no maximum. |

Here is where the serving size for hummus is hidden....
Doesn't the 1/3 - 1/2 cup bean serving "mush" :D up into roughly 2 Tbsps? (probably a bit more...)
Meal Plan Guidelines from SBD site - portion sizes, etc.
http://www.southbeach-diet-plan.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=24136&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0
(from the thread)...
Carbohydrate
Many sources (such as this US guidelines page) say that the brain needs a minimum of 130 g of carbohydrate daily in order to function properly. Of course, they question this claim at Atkins.com. Who knows what the truth is. On SB, we know that we do need good carbs, and 130 g can easily be done on Phase 2 and Phase 3, such as with the following daily intake of healthy carbohydrate-bearing foods:
2 cups skim milk
1 cup plain yogurt
½ cup dry old-fashioned oatmeal
1 oz Triscuit Thin Crisps
1 Smoked Chicken Salad w/ Raspberry-Balsamic Vinaigrette (SBD cookbook)
1 medium apple
2 Tbsp hummus
2 Tbsp natural peanut butter
1 serving of Roasted Veggies (original SBD book)
½ cup black beans
portion of protein for dinner
The above, with only 2 fruits and 2 grains, is about 150 g of carbohydrates (not including fiber). So it's easy to surpass the 130 g minimum with a balanced diet as recommended by Phases 2 and 3. |

| Thanx Everyone! It turns out that some of my coworkers ate quite a bit of it too leading me to beleive that I ate the whole thing myself! I did eat too much though and will be trying to make my own so I can cut back on the oil. |

I made my own for the first time the other day. I only like the roasted pepper variety, but I cooked my chickpeas, roasted my pepper, put it all together, & it really wasn't that hard to make, not to mention how much cheaper it is to make yourself. I thinned mine out with water instead of oil & it tastes great. There's still natural oil in the tahini though.... |
