High Fiber Cereal on Phase 2

Hey everyone! I went to my doctor last week and he told me that I needed to be getting at least 25grams of fiber in my diet every day, and that the veg and stuff I was eating was good, but not getting me even close to half of the recommended daily amount. He told me to eat 1/2 a cup of this cereal called "All Bran - Bran Buds" every day. That half a cup contains 20 grams of the 25 he recommended a day, so along with all my veg, I'm hitting the goal. Its actually a really tasty cereal :) Just wanted to let you know about it, probably good for phase 2? The only down thing I noticed about it and its compatability with SBD P2 is that it has 8 grams of sugar per serving, and a serving on the box is 1/3 a cup...

If your doctor told you to eat the cereal, then do that!
The guidelines for cereal in P2 is at least 5 g of fiber and up to 8 g of sugar, so your cereal is fine.

So, you're now officially in P2. I still believe that you could have complete your P1 requirements and probably eating more beans and other high fiber veggies and not re-introduce your cereal before your 2 weeks in P1.

But as I said before, DO WHAT YOUR DOCTOR TOLD YOU TO DO :wink:

Actually, Ami, I finished P1 probably almost 2 weeks ago. I had bought bread and some fruit, but somehow (as has happened in the past) as soon as I reach P2 I completely fall off the bandwagon, which sucks. I started at 140lbs and am currently leveled off at 130lbs...

I've been trying to have my veggie omelete in the morning, before the bowl of cereal and then eat pretty much like I'm on P1 for the rest of the day... Today I had an oatmeal and chocolate chip cookie at work though. Ugh. How depressing. I keep wanting to go back officiall to P1, its wierd. Maybe it's a mind state? But in P2 you're doing P1 with just a healthy grain or carb introduced daily...

Thats good that the cereal meets the sugar recommendations! Hopefully some other south beachers can benefit from it. I think it's actually really tasty, and enjoy my bowl each day :)

I bought this cereal, but the nutrition information on my box says roughly 13g of fiber and 8.1g of sugar per serving. (I'm wondering if the "20" is a typo?) Because it's such a compact cereal, the serving size is small (1/3 cup).

FWIW, the ingredients are almost entirely bran (three kinds) and sugar (sugar and HCFC). There can't be all that much sugar, though, if there's only 8g per serving.

The fiber content looks good.... but 8.1 gms. sugar per 1/3 cup serving is kind of high (and sugar is the second ingredient listed)... I believe this cereal was changed from "Good" to "Limited" a few years back because of the added sugar...

Here are the cereal guidelines...

Cold - 30 grams/1 ounce/3/4 cup. Varieties with 3.0 - 4.9 grams are “good” sources of fiber. “High” fiber cereals have 5.0 grams of fiber or more per serving. Choose a cereal with enough fiber to be at least on the upper end of “good,” and make sure it has less than 8 grams of sugar per serving (3/4 cup).

Here are the "Limited" cereals, which you can eat in a pinch but there are better choices for every day (the new Guide says "Limited" means no more than once a week):

cold Limited cereals
Bran Chex (isn't in the 2005 Guide-- this listing is from the old version)
Bran Flakes (¾ cup)
Cheerios (1 cup)
Kashi Medley (½ cup)
Life (¾ cup)
Swiss Muesli (¼ cup)
Nutri-grain (isn't in the 2005 Guide-- this listing is from the old version)
Special K (1 cup)

hot Limited cereals
Quick Oatmeal (differs from instant-- quick oats still need to be cooked)

Okay, here are some changes to the list on page 1 of this thread, with the new info coming from the 2005 Guide:

Why would Bran Flakes be limited?
The ones I have been eating almost every day (Walmart generic) have per 3/4 cup:
5 grams fiber
5 grams sugar
25 grams total carbs
110 calories

Any other cereals I look at are a lot worse. Including the touted Kashi Go Lean, whose various types seem all to be sugar laden.

I am guessing because it has "added" sugar in the form of high fructose corn syrup...... (products containing hfcs are to be "avoided", per the faq's).


Kashi Go Lean's serving size (per the box) is one cup w/6 grams sugar per cup. So a SB serving 3/4 cup would put it closer to 4 gms per serving (within the SB guidelines).

I made the BEST chicken using Kashi 7 Whole Grain Nugget Cold Cereal. The cereal has 7gr fiber, 3 g sugar per 1/2 cup.

I took chicken boneless breasts and cut them in strips and put them in a cup of lowfat buttermilk and nonfat plain yogurt for about 1/2 hour. Then in a zip lock bag I put some of the Kashi cereal, garlic powder, cayenne pepper, a little salt and pepper and crushed the nugget cereal a little while I was shaking the dry ingredients. I then wiped off most of the yogurt from the chicken strips and put them in the zip lock bag and shook the bag to coat the chicken. (Remember Shake and Bake)

I placed the coated chicken on a foil lined, olive oil sprayed baking dish and cooked them for about 30 minutes (till they got brown and crunchy). Wow!!!! incredibly good!!! I've used the chicken cut up on salads this week as well as eating them for a snack. Very Good! Try it!

For a high fiber cereal, I love Uncle Sam's. Ingredients are whole wheat kernels, whole flaxseed, salt, barley malt, niacin, riboflavin (vitamin B2), thiamin mononitrate (vitamin B1). 3/4 cup is 190 calories, 5g fat, 10g fiber and less than 1g sugar.

Another high fiber product that I like are the Southaven Farms muffins and pancakes. There's a thread in the Recipes section, I'll bump it up for you so you can see. It's an easy (and delicious!) way to eat a muffin and get another 5g fiber.
