I have heard it said that if you go to bed on a full stomach, you will gain weight.
That being said............ I have always tried not to eat anything past 7pm. Water or hot tea is fine but nothing else until I eat my breakfast at 7am. Most days I am fine but sometimes (like now) I am ready to munch. It is 9:52 here and If I eat now, this food is just going to sit on my stomach!
what do you do when you have late evening munchies. What are Dr A's guidelines for this dielemma?

Eat!
It is good to have a substantial snack (not just tea) after dinner. You don't want to overdo it and eat and eat and eat just for the fun of it... but if you are truly hungry, you should eat something to keep you through the night. |

Q: Are bedtime snacks permitted on The South Beach Diet(tm)?

A: It is perfectly acceptable to enjoy a bedtime snack on The South Beach Diet(tm).
There isn't any evidence that nighttime eating will compromise your weight-loss efforts. A recent study performed at the Oregon Health Sciences Institute, for example, found no correlation between nighttime eating and weight gain.
If you find yourself with a case of the midnight munchies, add a late night snack to your meal plan. This is particularly helpful during Phase 1 of the diet when you are still getting your cravings under control. For many people, nighttime eating also means bingeing on junk foods and desserts. With The South Beach Diet(tm), many of these unhealthy foods are off-limits-try raw veggies, nuts, cottage cheese, sliced meats, and hummus instead.
If you modify your meal plan to accommodate a midnight snack, but still find you crave high-GI carbohydrates late at night, try these tactics to avoid bingeing:
Make sure you eat regular meals and all your snacks during the day.
When a craving hits, drink water.
Distract yourself-take a bath or go for a walk...whatever it takes to avoid the kitchen.
Turn off the TV-commercials can tempt you with unhealthy foods.
Brush your teeth. This may help to remind you that you're done eating for the day.
***That's one of the reasons Dr. A. suggests to have the ricotta desserts, since the lactose from the cheese helps you keep your sugar level during the night.
You might want to save your dessert for later and eat it just before going to sleep.
In any case, this is NOT a starvation diet, if you're hungry, EAT!

| I save my dessert to eat later at night for this exact reason. I have been having problems with chocolate cravings and in order not to binge eat I allow myself 1 or 2 of the no sugar added fudgesicles that are 40 calories each. I know I'm technically not supposed to eat this much but it's better than the 100+ calories, plus other junk I'm not supposed to have either. |
