This is from Dr. A. :
Encouragement for Discouraged Dieters?

Q: I designed The South Beach Diet(tm) so that you don't have to starve yourself to get results. Quite the opposite: I encourage you to eat well and eat often to avoid slowing down your metabolism and creating a feeling of deprivation. If you're feeling deprived, then you need to take a step back and reexamine your diet.
-Annette

A: Too often people set unreasonable goals for a diet. These people are looking for a quick weight-loss fix but don't understand the biology behind weight loss. Sure, you can lose weight fast by not eating, but your metabolism slows down so much that the minute you return to your old eating habits, you'll find you put on even more weight than before.
Instead of continuing to cycle between weight loss and weight gain, I encourage you to make a permanent change to your lifestyle. That's where The South Beach Diet(tm) comes in.

I know I've said many times before that The South Beach Diet(tm) is not a quick fix, and I mean it. Some weeks you may not lose anything at all. That's OK. Slow weight loss is long- term weight loss.

The great thing about The South Beach Diet(tm) is that you can continue to eat a lot of your favorite foods. Yes, you are encouraged to give up refined sugars and foods containing large amounts of saturated fat, but you can still enjoy them as a rare treat.
You are in control. There's no counting or points - only guidelines and recommendations.
You don't have to follow the menus in the book or on the Web site recipe for recipe. If you're sick of eggs, find a new food you'll enjoy. If you're burned out by your exercise routine, then find a new activity or take a couple of days off. You have the power to take control of your lifestyle.

For those of you who are stuck in a rut, riding a plateau, or feeling generally discouraged, don't give up. No one said it would be easy, but we all know that nothing worthwhile ever is. Just as you work hard to maintain your relationships, excel at your job, or master your hobbies, changing your lifestyle also requires hard work. When you get down in the dumps and are ready to quit, remember this: You can and will achieve anything you set your mind to. Hang in there!

If you aren't exercising at all, that is a great place to start shaking things up as you can start increasing your caloric expenditures simply by moving more. But the other side of it is that as you lose weight, you need fewer and fewer calories to support that level of weight, so if you are in a comfortable routine with your food, you might need to shake things up there and cut back portions a bit as well to get caloric intake down to a point where you can start losing again. good luck!! plateaus are no fun!!
