Why is it so hard to lose weight? Why is it so hard to stay on track??

Let's see.... Last Friday, there were 3 boxes of Girl Scout cookies brought home... they called my name for hours, then I gave in to one... then two... then three.... then I can't count that high... Ok, so I made a mistake, but as usual, I couldn't pick myself up. Saturday, did great, then the cookies again, only a couple though. Sunday, made egg salad... put it on white bread... had 3 of them throughout day with potato chips. Monday, had a taste for home made macaroni & cheese, so I made some and ate alot!!!

It's now Tuesday.... I want to pick myself!!!!! I'm going try VERY hard!!!!

Why is it so hard????

1) get those girl scout cookies out of the house! THEY ARE SIN IN A BOX!

2) Egg Salad. Is this a "trigger" food for you? what I mean by that is when you eat it, can you stop? I am that way with a chicken or shrimp salad. I found a recipe that is SBD friendly and I only make 1 serving. Once that is gone. There is no more.

I urge you (if you haven't already) to check out the recipe section of this message board. There are many healthy substitutes for the unhealthy foods thats we used to enjoy pre SBD.

As far as staying on track. This is only something that YOU can do. Yea, it is hard!Temptation is everywhere! I found that what helps me the most is preplanning my meals for the week. Prepacking my meals for work and pushing wather throughout the day.

In the end, just keep your eye on the prize. HEALTHY BODY! I feel much healthier when I am not eating all of the refined sugars and processed carbs. It takes time... I am not there yet either but Rome wasn't built in a day . Just keep on Keepin on and GOOD LUCK!

sadly even when you stay on track most of the time it's hard.

and there is no magic. sometimes willpower is all there is.

if the food is not in the house you can't eat it.

we had no snacks in the house for the first year I was on the beach. if someone wanted something not beachy they had to go get it.

now they keep stuff in the house that does not appeal to me. (most snacks no longer appeal to me) so I don't even think about them.

if it's not there you can't eat it.

as for fufilling cravings, well again sadly you gotta say no. it's not magic. it's hard work. but the rewards can be so worth it.

Thanks so much for your words of encouragement.

The cookies are gone... I ate them all! just kidding

I don't believe egg salad is a trigger for me, I think it was the cookies. My egg salad is eggs & mayo only, the same as my deviled eggs and they don't cause any problems, so I really think it was the cookies.

I'm working hard today to get back on track. I should have been on to phase 2 starting yesterday but now I need to do another week to get rid of my cravings.

I WILL find my willpower again and get back on track, starting right now!!!

Thanks again... I really appreciate it!!!

I agree. I now accept I cannot have any trigger foods in the house as I eat them and then I'm on a downward spiral. I think of it like being an ex-alcoholic or an ex-smoker - you wouldn't keep booze or cigarettes in the house then, would you?

I have to laugh - my wife runs the local Girl Scout Troop? Council? Something? (it got lots of different smaller goups in it). Anyway, our house looks like an Archway factory. There must be 250 boxes of girl scout cookies in the house, and they're damn near everywhere. I'd love to take credit for amazing will power, but I'm not much of a sweets guy, thank heavens. If girl scouts start selling pizza or soft pretzels, however, I'm screwed.

With that said, I was looking for my almonds last night and ran smack into a wall of shortbread cookies. Ouch. I made it, but they sure looked good. If I'd have eaeten one, I'd have eaten 15 (boxes).

As for your underlying question, I think it's "hard," because we spend the better part of a lifetime getting heavy, and want to be thin in a few weeks/days/minutes. When we aren't, even though we've been "so good," we get frustrated, angry pouty, and go back to the path of least resistance. I literally visit the "before and after" pages here EVERY day. I try and forget about what I'll look like Saturday, and try and focus on what I'll look like at Thanksgiving. I'm not saying that's easy, but it's all I got. The scale hasn't moved much lately, but I'm wearing a pair of 36 pants today that wouldn't have almost-sort-of-a-little-bit fit on 1/14/08. I take heart and move on. Best of luck. See you at Thanksgiving.

You know in yoga when we are all struggling through a difficult class or a difficult set of postures, we have been encouraged lately to "try easy" instead of trying so hard. Easy or hard is often what we make of it and how we orient our mind to think of it. It can be as easy as choosing the foods we know will support our health and make us feel truly better in both the short and long run or as hard as the self-denial involved in all the cookies, refined white breads and pastas, sweets and so forth.

So maybe today instead of trying very hard, try very easy!! ;)

I just learned something similiar.... 'Cheat Smart'! When you cheat smart, you know you are cheating or going to cheat, so you stop at 1 cookie or better yet, you cheat smart and choose something better for you but remember to make smart decisions!

i just started phase 2 and think i'm already cheating smart (i hope). i had a bite of roasted potatoes one night and a few spoons of icecream the other. i lost 6.5 lbs on phase 1 and now another pound on phase 2.

also two occasions when i just plain cheated (not smart at all)- ate a whole maple pecan pastry from the swedish bakery (was going to stick to eggs at brunch but couldn't resist) and then last night, drank half a bottle of wine, instead of one glass staying up late and watching the election results! oops!
but still, 7.5 lbs down so far and my belt is one notch looser today (4 notches since i started)
