I have been reading the South Beach diet forum for a while now. Its helped me a lot to start my diet and stay on track. Now that I feel I have my diet under control I have been debating on buying a treadmill or elliptical. Which would give me the most benefit? It seems everyone has said elliptical is the best. With the elliptical, sometimes your momentum may actually be keeping you moving though but if you set the intensity at a good level then you can push and pull with your arms and get a great leg workout so that option seems like the least boring but if you use a treadmill then its all you. Then, if you go with an elliptical do you do front driven: http://www.bayoufitness.com/Endurance-E5-Electronic-Elliptical-by-Body-Solid-256 or rear driven: http://www.bayoufitness.com/Detail.bok?no=160(the prices are significantly lower for rear driven...maybe thats bad?) or center driven: http://www.bayoufitness.com/Ironman-Achiever-Dual-Action-Elliptical-Trainer-251
There are too many different options so I am lost!!

I have a LifeFitness elliptical bike that has given our family no troubles for years. I prefer ellipical because it it easier on the back.

First of all how old are you and do you have any physicial issues? I was needing to do some cardio myself and wanted something to supplement my walking (at home). I also belong to a gym. I personally have severe lower back issues that really limit alot of what I can do at the gym...many machines and some of the classes wouldn't do the back any good.

I asked your same question about a year ago....was told the elliptical would be the best. It's easier on the knees and offers a good cardio work-out. HOWEVER, I could barely muster up the strength to do 5 minutes on the thing. I'd purchased one 2nd hand for at home use...but this also was the results I found at the gym. So I used the gym for it's treadmill and I personally prefer it. Last month we bought a used treadmill for home-use. BUT I began to ask people in my stretch class how they got so good on the elliptical (these are senior citizens). One lady, who is 73 and I think she's my "model", said it took her a very long time before she was able to endure 30 minutes on the elliptical. I think it's strength in the hip area that needs to be built up. Exercise on this machine will mimic walking in sand. Think of walking on the beach!!!!

So before you make the purchase, I would see if you could try on a trial basis if you don't belong to a gym, each of these machines.

Join a gym for a month. Try them both..
However, keep in mind that the $4000 elliptical at the gym is a completely different feel than the $500 home one.

I use both at the gym. If i could only use one, it would be the elliptical.
