Never Heavy Until Later in Life

Hi all!

I would love to chat with some of you who are in the same boat as me. I was quite thin and in shape most of my life, even after my first child, running every day. Now after another child (both are teenagers now), I found my weight has really crept up and now that I am in the throws of menopause (51) I feel like a light switch has just been turned off and since my monthly cycles have stopped, I have put on another 13 pounds onto my already 40 lb weight gain since kids. It is so wierd because I have lost weight before (in my early 40s), and I have had well-meaning friends say to me, "you're losing too much. You don't want to get too skinny." The funny thing is, they didn't know the "real me" 40 lbs ago because I didn't know them then. When I say to them that this heavy person is not who I am, they just nod knowingly and say I'm getting too skinny and they are just worrying about me." Maddening. Anyway back to the original topic, I am 51, cycles have stopped and I am just miserable and starting SB. I would love to hear from anybody in my predicament. I really feel that there is my "old self" in there somewhere.

Many people are threatened by those who choose to eat better, exercise more and lose weight, because they know they should, but you are doing what they continue to make excuses for in their own lives. I got a lot of that "you're getting too skinny" stuff too. I do think there is a point as we are losing that we do start to look a little gaunt before our skin kind of catches up with the rest of us and it is often such a big change from those who have only seen us "heavy" that it is a somewhat common reaction. If it is out of genuine concern then take it as a complement that others care about you. But I really believe that if we eat well and healthily and incorporate regular exercise of some kind our bodies will find the "right" weight. You know what's right for you better than anyone else, so trust that and keep moving forward. When you have one of those "light switch" moments, it's usually best to keep it in the "On" position!! :) Enjoy your journey!!
